Tasks: FR: Android widget for adding task

Created on 28 Jun 2020  路  5Comments  路  Source: tasks/tasks

Firstly, terrific app, thanks so much for your time invested in it!

I've just switched over from Wunderlist, and one feature I miss from its Android app is a 1x1 widget for immediately adding a task. Tasks.org has something _almost_ the same - a 1x1 which opens the main app, and then one tap on + gets me to the same place. But since this is something I do often, one step would be more convenient.

(It makes sense for the widget to do this, since as it is its function is identical to the (same-sized) app shortcut button on the launcher, so the widget doesn't add any new functionality.)

Backing out will no longer bring you to the app as of 108c1f284b00b14aa8f62b1d27aafcf5e9f702fb. This will be available in the next release, although I've been making some major internal changes so this won't be generally available for a while. I'm hoping to release a new alpha version in the next day or two if you would like to sign up.

The 1x1 widget can be configured to directly go to one of the filters, which may come in handy (which is why they add functionality the regular launcher icon does not have). You can have a few of those in different colors, with different names to go to different filters/lists ... at once.

The 2x2 widget, however has a +-button that do pretty much what you are asking, so this might be a good workaround for now.

Having a 1x1 add task widget (that may have preconfigured list and/or other fields!) would ceertainly be handy sometimes. That is pretty much how I use my shopping lsit 2x2 widget right now.

Thanks. I see now how the widget differs from the launcher icon. Using the 2x2 widget is a good suggestion, and it's what I'm doing now. The ideal would be that that when hitting the plus button you add a task, hit save, and then the window disappears (rather than taking me back to the app). I am trying to improve my skills and maybe at some point I can take this on and submit a PR :)

There's also a QuickSettings tile you can add to the pull-down menu that brings you straight to the "Input new task" window, it's great!

Yes, it would be nice to go directly back to the original activity, be it the launcher from the widget or the running app from the QS tile. Hope you find the inspiration to do it.

Great shout! Switching to this method from now on :)
