Signal-desktop: Inconsistent taskbar flashing behavior when drawing or clearing attention to the window.

This might be intended or a platform issue (Windows 7), but I had the urge to file this.

  • have conversation open and focus anywhere in it, doesn't matter if compose field or message list.
  • get a message in that convo
  • notice the notification highlight in the taskbar, despite the fact, that your convo window is on top and focused
  • the highlight only disappears, when clicking on it, or changing the focus to another window an back to that convo

I have a weird issue on windows 10, the icon in the taskbar blinks for no reasons, no message received but blinking.

I have a log here, don't worry about the last few lines I played with temporary messages.

What's important is the lines between 2017-06-28T13:31:28 and 2017-06-28T13:36:44

You see no new messages received or sent for 5 minutes but the icon was blinking.

@McLoo Is this still reproducible on windows?

Ahh, fixed it? So that's why I had no notifications during my last tests...

Will check thoroughly within the next 24 hours

Windows 7 test with 0.1.3 (dev mode, not beta programm)

notification if

  • only Chrome but no Signal window is opened
(the active Chrome profile does not seem to matter)
  • Signal window is open but _not_ focused

_NO_ notification if

  • Signal window is focused and the messaged convo is open
  • Signal window is focused and another convo but the messaged is open
  • Chrome and Signal are closed (that's lame :grimacing:)

(nearly) perfect behavior.
Not sure about the case when you are in another convo. One might miss the unread counter (unless there would sth. like the good old ICQ-"oh-oh"). Leaving the issue open therefore.

_(Tested with two signal desktops, is there some local transport done? Ultra fast! :+1: )_

gee, this issue was about the taskbar, not conversations!
me stupid :flushed:

No taskbar (blinking) anymore. In no case, which is fine because we got the above documented chrome notifications :)

It really should be happening though. Can you try calling window.drawAttention() in the background page (while signal window is open of course). Does that trigger blinking?

Done with Chrome 47.0.2526.73 m

No attention drawn. Hope I did it right (in the Console)

> window.drawAttention()
< undefined

What I - JS noob - noticed

  • Whisper.Bimap was not offered from the function list in the console
  • There's a lot window-for-conversation discovering done in panel_controller.s, though there is only 1 (app-)window now

test window.drawAttention() again on 0.3.1
Now it draws the attention,
but an incoming message do not always didn't figure out the pattern yet. draw attention is called all the time according to the log

sometimes there is no attention
sometimes a short blink (without clear attention being called)
sometimes the the attention is drawn :tada:

no real pattern visible yet :disappointed:

One receipt of a new message:

  • The Windows System Tray notification appears for a couple of seconds but
  • The Signal taskbar icon does not turn orange.
  • The "peek" preview when hovering over the Signal taskbar icon has the number of new messages in parentheses.

Signal 0.25.3
Chrome 54.0.2840.71 m
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit version 1607 (Anniverary Update)

I expect this this is fixed in the new Standalone app.
