Handbrake: [Feature Request] Stop converting .srt subtitles in .ass ! add passthrough option for subtitles please

Hanbrake is a very good encoding tool, but i don't understand why it's convert all my embedded .srt subtitles in .ass format !

I don't like .ass subtitles, it cause compatibility and buffering issues with some home-streaming server (Plex...), same thing with Older devices like first and second generation of Samsung and LG smart T.V. : it can decode effortlessly H264 with .srt subtitles embedded but suffers some light stuttering when displaying .ass subtitles.

So i must remux all video converted with handbrake to remove all the .ass garbage and replace it by the original .srt subtitles... this is very time-consuming.

You can put an option to prevent Handbrake to converting .srt to .ass format (which is a not needed feature in the most of case), just copy the .srt stream and embed them directly in the video, must be simple, no ?

From now on, each +1 moves another project on the queue ahead of more subtitle work. The queue is miles long. +1 does not change anything aside from putting me in a foul mood.

I second this request badly!

I've to remove all .ass subtitles and replace them with .srt which is very time consuming.
It would be awesome if the Handbrake team could create an option to let the user decide whether to convert the .srt subtitle to .ass of leave the .srt untoched.

Another significant downside is that most players permit some customisation of how they'll render .SRT streams, but will only render .ASS/.SSA according to the stream settings.

So, you can personalise those players to display .SRT (those without embedded formatting) in a particular colour, font & size, like this:
SRT

Whereas, once HB has converted it into SubStation format, you're stuck with this, like it or not:
SSA

From now on, each +1 moves another project on the queue ahead of more subtitle work. The queue is miles long. +1 does not change anything aside from putting me in a foul mood.

if I'm not mistaken HB accepts .ssa subtitles
with modifications of colors, layout etc
only if the subtitles are burnt in the video.
Otherwise HB does not integrate all these parameters, and the rendering is standard.

to convert them into srt try the Subtitle Edit software (fairly complete)
hoping that I answered your problem well

Thanks for your answers but that i ask is just for an option to "Passthrough" .srt Subtitles, Let Handbrake convert .srt in SSA subtitles and then use another program tu reconvert ASS to .srt is not really an option to me...

This isn't a support request. This is a feature request. HandBrake can not do what the user is asking for.

Wired that still Handbrake insists in converting SRT to old deprecated SSA ?
Hope it can be fixed

The SSA format is not deprecated. It's also more powerful and flexible than SRT. The library we use for it us under active development.

If someone wants the ability to toggle this behaviour sooner, we will welcome patches. Otherwise such comments are not helpful.

out of curiosity:
what do you intend to correct ?

There is nothing to correct here. Using SSA is by design. This feature request is about adding a toggle to choose between SSA and SRT output

Ok, sorry, I missed that it was moved to feature request. It is just wired to have handbrake force this conversion without any way to opt out. A remux is always mandatory if we need the srt. Best regards and keep up the good work

Note: i suggest a sub Auto pass through as default. It would match and be consistent with the audio gui implementation
