Desktop: [Feature Request] File Download on Demand

Created on 17 Sep 2020  路  9Comments  路  Source: nextcloud/desktop

It would be very helpful, to have an "On demand" file sync option as it is implemented in Microfocus Filr desktop client.

By this feature you don't need to decide wich files you want to synchronise but _all_ files are visible an only those you use are downloaded. Nearly the same situation as with the mobile clients.

This speeds up the sync for new desktop clients as only the directory structure has to be synchronised.

virtual file / drive / whatever you call it has been commented to death on the nextcloud forums Link and addressed multiple time on githubm with users proposing to pay for that development.
But except of tons of recommandations and suppositions by various users, no real ETA or official statement has been made since that ominous annoucement.
Fact is that after two years since the initial announcement all of the other big and not so big cloud provider offer this kind of solution except NC.
I'm sorry but this is frustating as a user and I'm wondering how nextcloud can claim to be the most popular cloud file synching solution provider.

I guess with the pivot to transform nextcloud into a hub where the users are supposed to work more using their webbrowser than their file browser the attention to add such essentials improvement to the desktop-client is lowered.

I think this is what the 'virtual drive' feature is capable of.

The OwnCloud client can work with a Nextcloud server how you want. The Virtual Drive works in the same fashion as well, but the feature isn't very stable as of yet, as far as I tried it out.

I think this is a duplicate of another ticket but can't find it at the moment...

Owncloud already got Virtual Files Support on their Desktop Client. https://owncloud.com/features/virtual-files/

O.k. so I see we not only have this Feature Request but also the discussion #1951 and on the other hand the mentioned instability using OwnCloud client:

So is there any plan to implement this really important feature for NC-Client?

This is still under work. Unlikely to be tagged stable this year, aiming at Q1 or Q2 next year.

I'm looking forward to this function. In fact, many products already have this function. NC, come on!

This is the missing part for the groundbreaking NC hub solution. Otherwise it will not be successful
