Widescreenfixespack: [REQ] Camera Pan Speed - Silent Hill

Created on 7 Oct 2016  路  22Comments  路  Source: ThirteenAG/WidescreenFixesPack

As you may know SH2 PC camera panning is way too slower than the PS2 version, when you reset the camera it travels so slowly. Like the slow transition between doors, inventory, map etc. And since you were able to fix this may I request to speeding up to camera panning if it's possible or doable?

That sounds doable to me, but I won't be able to try until sometime next month. Let me know if there's any other inconsistencies between the two versions and I'll look into those next month too.

I'm not a fan of the results that 'fast transitions' produces, as it doesn't do anything for the slow map transition, and it looks too abrupt. I remember having found a float value that controlled the speed, so I'll see if I can improve this feature as well.

Awesome! Time is no problem, man. I can wait forever, We will never get any official support from Konami, ever. Community fixes all we have. Btw have you been working on Silent Hill 4?

A modder who tried to extract PS2 fog once stated that its resolution was at 512x512 while PC version's 256x256. Can PC fog be forced to render at higher resolution?

All I can say is that the bare minimum work for Silent Hill 4 has been done. There's a lot left to do still.

I think someone by the name of nemesis2000 may have already fixed the fog: http://ps2wide.net/pc.html. I don't know if it makes it exactly like the PS2 version, but it looks close enough.

As for the fog resolution: you can increase the size and density all you want, but the detail won't be same unless you replace the actual texture with a higher res version. I don't believe Silent Hill Texture Explorer allows you to do that, so that modder must have used a tool like TexMod. That's my guess.

Woahh, so he did for SH2 too ha. It definitely helps to hide the horizontal line where the world rendering ends which is the main function of the fog. It's still low res but better, more fog means less grayish still emptiness on the screen too.

Is there a way to use both the widescreen and fog fix?

@Verbo84 Yes, check this guide: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Silent_Hill_2:_Director's_Cut#Install_Fog_Fix_alongside_Widescreen_Fix

Hmm, that's interesting; I just dumped the files over widescreen fix and both working together.

Thanks, Keith94.

Any suggestions on what cpu and gpu I would need to run the 3 sh pc titles and their fixes at max settings and 60fps? Adding the fog fix made the frame-rate slow to a crawl on my old clunker.

@Verbo84

I recommend to tweak and lower the values in the fog.ini file a little. Try to find best possible look for your taste. Lowering the values will help to boost your frame-rate. That's my values, it's enough to hide the things that needs to be hidden without blocking everything:

[FOG]

fog_custom_on = 1 // 0 - Off; 1 - On;

fog_transparency_layer1 = 128 // original value 128;
fog_transparency_layer2 = 150 // original value 128;

fog_layer1_x1 = 0.200 // original value 0.125;
fog_layer1_x2 = 0.200 // original value 0.125;
fog_layer1_y1 = 0.200 // original value 0.125;
fog_layer1_y2 = 0.200 // original value 0.125;

fog_layer2_size = 500.0 // original value 350.0;

fog_layer2_pattern_val1 = 0.066406 // original value 0.048828;
fog_layer2_pattern_val2 = 0.066406 // original value 0.048828;
fog_layer2_pattern_val3 = 0.066406 // original value 0.048828;
fog_layer2_pattern_val4 = 0.066406 // original value 0.048828;

You will not get 60fps without issues for any of the three.

Thank you.

@Aero52 Any luck on the camera if you've looked into it?

I've confirmed the camera on the PS2 version is much faster, but that's about it. I spent a day looking for the camera speed on PC but I failed. I haven't given up on it; it's just been pushed back on my to-do list so I can hopefully get Silent Hill 4 done this month. I will try again after that.

Thank you and good luck on both the camera and Silent Hill 4.

@Markeron Good news, I found something for the camera speed. The camera no longer lags behind the player when moving, and activating search view moves the camera much, much quicker. I'll have to see how the results compare to the PS2 version, but expect something for this in the next SH2 update.

EDIT: The results are nearly identical to the PS2 version based on the YouTube videos I've seen. Unfortunately setting the FPSLimit to 60 affects the camera, so I made this feature with 30 fps in mind since that's what the game was optimized for on PC.

@Aero52 It's great to hear that, man. What an awesome come-back! I can't wait to try it out.

60 fps doesn't much matter. I think the most of the people doesn't use it due to its sound effects duplication problems. It's hardly a loss.

So exciting!

The funny thing is I wasn't going to try this again until next month, but while I was testing xinput plus I noticed the camera was reacting instantaneously in certain parts of the apartment hallways. I figured there must have been some correlation between that and the camera speed.

Also, the current status on SH4 in case you missed it: http://gtaforums.com/topic/547841-gtanfsmpother-widescreen-fixes-pack/?p=1069340147

That'll give you an idea of when to expect the next update as well.

Yeah, honestly I didn't expect that after your last update. So it came as a really nice surprise.

I didn't know you post there, I will also check that site too regularly from now on.

@Aero52 Sorry if it looks like being impatient, but is the next update close?

Close, as in there's a good chance of the update being release before the month is over, based on a recent reply from ThirteenAG? Yes. Sorry that I can't be anymore precise than that, but I don't want to say next week (for example) and fail to deliver on that when only ThirteenAG knows for sure.

@Markeron Okay, you can try the update right now at this link https://ci.appveyor.com/project/ThirteenAG/widescreenfixespack/build/artifacts

Let me know if everything works as you wanted.

Yes, the camera is very satisfactory now. But the game crashes if I attempt to enter 'options' to configure buttons, the same happens for 'movies' too.

Make sure to replace all files with the ones the appveyor download contains. Check if you have d3d8.dll in your installation folder, and if not grab that from here https://thirteenag.github.io/wfp#silenthill The dll isn't included in the appveyor download.

If you're using Xinput Plus, rename dinput8.dll (from appveyor) to winmmbase.dll, then re-apply Xinput Plus. If you're still having problems then make a new issue and include information about your exe, because I can't reproduce these crashes at all.
