Tdesktop: Block users in group chats

Created on 19 Dec 2018  路  24Comments  路  Source: telegramdesktop/tdesktop

So, it's uh, blocking people in group chats.

It's 2018, three years later and you still haven't implemented this basic functionality despite dozens of people requesting the feature.

For reference, here's the request you closed and locked in 2015 after your argument fell flat in the face of logical input from other users:

https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop/issues/1281

Here's my original request that you closed despite multiple other users chiming in that this feature is essential and crucial:

https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop/issues/1025

Here's another one you closed from another user requesting the feature:

https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop/issues/3772

And here's one from yet another user you closed referencing another request you closed, shutting down the request in the face of eager users clammering for you to input blocking users in group chats:

https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop/issues/5438

This has been going on for over three years and some of the requests are from as late as a few days ago.

You have closed multiple requests for the feature without any valid reason, despite protests from many people, and when people protested you silenced them by locking the comments so they couldn't have any further input on the matter.

Just FYI, silencing people isn't the same as cooperating with other members of the open source community who use your software.

This request isn't going to go away until you implement the feature, so you should save yourself some overhead and just implement it already.

Whoa, your toxicity level is raising, calm down. As I said previously on Reddit (where you also complained): "Telegram Desktop has nothing to do with it alone. It's an API issue and if it's implemented, it must be done in ALL clients, not only TDesktop"

And since this is not TDesktop's issue exclusively, your post is irrelevant to this repo, sorry.

1025 has been open (edit: not locked) for almost three years and the discussion has been redundant to a point where all the comments were just more elaborated "+1" people could have added to your opening post. I see no problem in closing it and locking. Your issue has been rejected because not supported by the backend (which has been stated multiple times in the thread, and the issue has been labeled as "API issue"), despite that the discussion has been going on for years. And it has been locked because there's anything tdesktop can do about it

You may argue that Telegram has no good way to suggest improvements platform-wide (which is true), but spamming tdesktop's repo with a request that has been rejected countless times doesn't make sense. The developer doesn't take part in this kind of decision-making and a "dozen" of issue on tdesktop's GitHub repository are not enough to make this issue jump on top of Telegram's todo's. Telegram is a messenger mostly used by the masses and the need of ignoring blocked people messages is coming mostly by Discord and IRC users, which probably don't make a big percentage of the total userbase. You should just let this go, as this is probably not going to be implemented platform-wide anytime soon

@foxmajik The final fact is: such feature won't be implemented in Telegram Desktop official client alone (without the same feature in other official apps, like mobile apps or the other desktop app you've been showing in #1281 on the screenshots).

Such feature request for one application only is a good example of a feature request for an unofficial fork. If really a lot of users would want such feature it could appear in some app forked from tdesktop, there are several.

@foxmajik

I think they have a purpose. It is obviouse function, I cannot believe it is absent accidentally.

Maybe it is a mass training, in future they will started any kind of indirect advertising, when people will use to they cannot blok annoying messages.

Maybe they need real social graph, when you are in groups wich you absolutely need only. Or they try to force us make more groups for little societies.

Must be the reason why the simplest function was not realise for 3 years.

You're saying that's an API issue meaning there is someone who will stab you to death if you don't display all the posts arrived from the API but hide some of them?

You can try this solution https://habr.com/ru/post/487512/

But it still needs to view blocked profile to update rules.

If you know somebody who can write a code which update information about blocked users after restart messanger, ask they to write it and we will build our application with ignoring.

Then they should go poke other teams or make an exception.
People need this feature and the requests will keep appearing here until it's implemented one way or another.

Hey devs.

Remember in my initial feature request when I said this would happen?

It's happening.

Oh and also it looks like someone implemented this feature for you:

https://github.com/Sea-n/tdesktop

So why don't you just cherrypick their changes from their github and merge them?

We cannot care less.
Until something is done the issues will keep appearing.

@Zhigalin you're basically suggesting to spam Github issues. That's not cool, man.

No, I'm just saying that those half-assed excuses won't work

it's not half-assed excuses, it's the reality, till durov brothers or marketing team don't gives ok you don't go to see this feature implemented (and i want it too), but again, it belongs to durov brothers and marketing team, not to telegram desktop bug tracker.

We're in 2020 and still nothing. Wonder why Telegram isn't popular worldwide.

@JoaoMXN There's a fork of Telegram called Telegreat that does it right: When you block someone it also blocks their messages in group chats.

No. It doesnt. You should install it before copy and past their fake description.

@411an Works for me. You have to go into Settings > Advanced and turn on "Ignore blocked users."

Also the project is open source. If it's not working for you consider filing a bug or participating in their group chat.

Is it hide pictures, stickers, videos, sounds now?
That grey text is not "Ignore".

Also the project is open source. If it's not working for you consider filing a bug or participating in their group chat.

I have talked to Sean about that and he said it works good for him, so the gray text is maximum level of ignore which he allows.

@411an At some point an update to Telegreat was pushed that made the ignore in groups feature stop working altogether but without removing the option from the settings.

I also noticed two other things:

  • When I asked about the missing functionality in their Telegram official chat my questions were ignored while the developers actively answered other questions from other users around the same time.
  • The developer has disabled the ability to report bugs/feature requests in their github.
  • There haven't been any updates to the project for over six months.

So it looks like the developer removed that feature then dropped the project.

I would be extremely curious to see the conversation that led to that.

Moreover, with the Telegreat project dead, there doesn't seem to be any other client available that can block messages in group chats.

Also relevant, from the Telegram subreddit:

As for me I absolutely sure its political decision. Telegram is really free and at the same time need really much money. Who gives it? Agents of influence and propagandists must know that their messages will definitely be read and make reactions. So people who read messages MUST read all messages.

I made my own _Ignoram_ but sadly its desktop only https://sites.google.com/view/ignoram/

And the code on the "page with code" already is old because they already changed it. Its a modern way to control people rights -
obfuscation. Formally you can make your own client, but in real life you need your own software studio and some wellpaid workers to understanding the code.
