Signal-desktop: Rate limit exceeded after version 1.18.1

Bug Description

When trying to send a Signal message through the Windows Desktop (many comments say this isn't just on Windows) app in version 1.39.4, the error "Rate limit exceeded, please try again later. (original: promiseAjax: invalid response; code: 413)" occurs. Contacts do not appear, only the self-notes chat is visible. I also noticed that when setting the desktop client for the first time and trying to search for a contact, the search bar disappears while typing. The error occured on another computer too, but the search box did not disappear and, after some trying again and again, it worked.

The reason why I marked this as not a duplicate is because this only talks about the old version, with only one cantact and says it's supposed to be fixed, when it is not.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Add a new Windows desktop client to the connected devices
  2. Once you're finished syncing contacts for the first time, try to send a note to yourself.

Actual Result:

This error occurs: "Rate limit exceeded, please try again later. (original: promiseAjax: invalid response; code: 413)". The message is not sent. If this error occurs, that Windows client cannot be used.

Expected Result:

The message should be sent, and you should be able to talk to normal contacts.

I too am experiencing this issue, also on v1.39.4 but I'm using PopOS (deb linux version from website installed today), also with Android phone.

This was on a fresh install of the desktop client, it says it's syncing contacts and messages and then I get a blank window.

I have messages already on my Andoid phone (never used Signal before) but I assume that the syncing would show messages already on the phone in this window.

From what I've seen, this error means the server is overloaded or something, but the Signal app should be running locally, so there can't be some Signal servers being overloaded preventing me from using the Desktop client.

I've been able to get it to work again by uninstalling and reinstalling, syncing and resyncing again and again, but I shouldn't have to do this every time.

I wonder if it has to do with my phone somehow not responding to the desktop client's requests or being on battery saving mode...

I'm experiencing this when trying to perform an initial sync of contacts and messages. Windows 10, client 1.39.4, brand new install:

Restarting and trying again doesn't fix it.

Contacts can't be synced when this error occurs, so if notes to self don't work, nothing works, unfortunately... is the latest 1.39.5 made to fix this issue?

Tried a fresh install on iOS and macOS several times now with the same result (clearing all data included). Without using inspector there is no hint that something went wrong. Just a blank unusable application.

Well, now that the aervers are exploding the devs won't have time to fix this issue...

We recently released a new version that should largely address these issues. Please make sure you're on the latest version of Signal Desktop, which should solve your problem.

I'm going to close because we believe the issue is resolved on the latest version, but let us know if that's wrong and we'll reopen.
