Bug description

For some reason, I'm no longer seeing any of my Signal-Android messages on Signal-Desktop.

Steps to reproduce

  1. I went out for a walk with Signal-Desktop opened on Windows 10. Hibernate and any type of power saving have been disabled so the computer was on the whole time.
  2. When I came home after chatting with a friend, I see a wall of messages from her and my messages aren't visible at all.
  3. Now when I write something on my phone, I see the message in the notification field on the right but not in the actual chat.
  4. Close the program and then open it again. All messages are now magically there again.

Actual result:
My messages aren't visible
Expected result:
My messages should be visible

Platform info

Signal version:

The latest beta, both for Desktop and Android

Operating System:

Windows 10 Pro N, all updates installed
Latest Android 8.1 on my Pixel XL

Having the same issue on iOS + macOS.
I was wondering if I鈥榤 doing anything wrong? Both are pretty fresh instals (iOS from last week + macOS installed today).
Incoming messages appear on all devices, outgoing messages are only visible for me on the device from which I sent the message.

Please let me know if you see this again in recent builds.

I am seeing this behavior.

Desktop version - 1.32.1
Android version - 4.57.2

Windows 10 Home

@boyzoid can you please post your debug logs, you can grab them from the menu View -> Debug Logs. It would also be helpful to know the history of usage of your desktop app and if the steps to reproduce match OPs.

I am not sure what you mean by 'history of usage'. I installed the desktop version after I installed the Android version and then linked them. This has been going on for a several montsh, but was not motivated to look into the issue until now.

As for reproducing:

On Android - post a message - in either a group or one-on-one chat
On desktop - don't see message

@boyzoid is this reproducible for every single message you send on Android and are you still having this issue? Does the message also appear if you restart the app just like the original post mentions? Are you able to send messages just fine from desktop -- and do those sync to your primary device just fine? Nothing jumps out at me from your debug log, the next steps would be to single out a specific message and look for it in your debug log.

Another quick test you can run, does switching between conversations make the message appear?

@josh-signal This happens with every message I send from my Android device - in every conversation.

I have restarted the Signal app (and my computer) several times over the last few weeks and the messages never appear.

I can see every message, from every conversation, I send from desktop on my Android device.

Switching between conversations does not get the messages to appear.

@boyzoid are you messaging another Signal user? If yes, can you please post some fresh debug logs (for Desktop) + find a specific message ID so we can look for it in the debug logs. You can get the message ID from the Android app by long pressing on the timestamp in the message details screen.

More info on when you're messaging a signal user vs not: https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007060212-Send-a-message

This happens when I am messaging other Signal users - individually and within a group.

Message ID - 1586348138054

@boyzoid I took a look at your most recent log, and I don't see any message from your Android device for sent id 1586348138054. What happens when you send a message to yourself (in your Note to Self conversation) on Desktop? Does that appear on Android? Would you be willing to provide your Android log after sending a message that doesn't show up on Desktop?

@scottnonnenberg Odd...when I searched that debug out put after submitting it, I saw a bunch of entries for that number.

When I try to use Not to Self on desktop, I get a message that I need to 'Unblock this contact' .

Maybe this is part of the problem?

So, I cannot use Note To Self from Desktop because I keep getting a message to unblock the contact.

From Android, I do not see any blocked contacts under Settings->Privacy-> Blocked Contacts

I do not get this message when I try to use Note To Self on Android, but the message never appears on Desktop.

Here is the log from Android. https://debuglogs.org/a68a7a0af288f926e84597e21d79f4596005f5e66b2cb4cef81fcaf911032834

Here is the message ID for the Note to Self message form Android: 1586387296969

Here is the message ID for a message I tried sending from Android to a group message: 1586387244810

I'd recommend trying a contact sync - you can go to Preferences, then click the 'Import Now' button. That should update your blocked list. Then, you can try messaging in that Note to Self conversation again. I want to establish some sort of communication between your devices before we move forward.

Another thing to check is what is listed in your 'Linked Devices' section in Android settings.

So, I could not import my contacts....it kept failing.

On a whim, I wiped all data on desktop on reconnected. I just posted a message from Android and saw it on desktop.

Thanks for being so patient.

@boyzoid Glad things are working for you again!

Next time, please provide logs before fully reinstalling. It would have been good to see what the errors were when you tried to Import. If it was delays, then that was likely your Android device not responding to that request for information. And we'd love to track down whatever caused it and fix it so it doesn't impact others.

I'm seeing this. I have two macOS installations of the Electron app, both installed just now, and one iOS install, installed on the 17th of September 2019.

  • Doing a contact import fails (on both of my two Electron installs) with "Make sure your computer and phone are connected to the internet".
  • I can see messages from other people on all three devices but my own messages don't appear on the phone if sent from Electron
  • Messages and images sent from the phone seem to appear on all three devices
  • I don't see a typing indicator on any of the Electron installs, but it shows on iOS
  • A message sent from Electron to "Note to self" shows an error ("partially sent"), and does not show up on the phone.
  • When installing the desktop app I noticed that the contact list on the left side took a long time to appear on desktop (a few minutes).
  • I bought a new iPhone recently and I don't remember having to set up the Signal app using a new SMS code, and I can't find any recent SMS verification codes when searching my iPhone's SMS inbox, only one message from September 2019

I will leave this broken install in place for now as long as it's useful for debugging.

Same issue on Linux desktop (beta)

I'm repeatedly getting this after initiating a sync (till the sync fails) --

Seems like some server related issue
