When updating Signal Desktop the program shortcut in the taskbar gets removed.
Actual result:
The shortcut is removed.
Expected result:
The shortcut stays where it was.
Signal version: v1.14.1-beta.1
Operating System: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
Linked device version: 4.23.4

This just happened to me on Windows 10 as well, for about the dozenth time. Signal also loses its taskbar icon appearance whenever it updates, just looking like a piece of blank paper.
This appears to be tracking the behavior in the electron-builderproject: https://github.com/electron-userland/electron-builder/issues/2514
The same on my side, this is really annoying. Need always to once again pin the shortcut to taskbar.
If Signal did not release an update every couple days this would be less of a problem. Is there any chance the priority of this fix can be escalated?
This is extremely frustrating same here.
Please sort this out. Extremely frustrating, especially considering how quickly signal updates. I use this enough that I pin it. I expect it to stay pinned.
This seems to have been fixed. Recent Signal updates didn't remove the taskbar pin for me on Windows 10.
@haffenloher Great to hear! I'm going to close this.
@scottnonnenberg-signal please reopen. I still experience this on two Windows 10 machines after update to 1.25.2
@mattimac Can you talk a little more about the behavior you just saw with the recent version update?
@scottnonnenberg-signal to be honest i am not even sure the bug ever disappeared for me. I use that two devices everyday and update every time it is available immediately. Should i gather debug log just after next update i get?
Logs won't help, but we'd appreciate some details about the previous shortcut files and the new shortcut files.
What do you mean?
Every - frustrating- time after the update the things i do are:
open the windows bar and type "signal"
run signa
on the task bar - right click and "pin to task bar"
nothing more
In the shortcut properties i can see the path is
C:\Users\[REDACTED]\AppData\Local\Programs\signal-desktop\Signal.exe
Oh, I'm mistaken. We're not talking about shortcuts being added or removed, but the state of 'pinned to taskbar' being lost.
Well technically 'pinned to taskbar' is a shortcut in C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar.
I also experience this issue and it was never resolved for me.
This is still broken. Signal should not remove the pin when it updates.
Still happening. Signal is unpinning after updates... and it updates often.
Same here still occurs. Quite annoying. - Windows 10 Pro 1903
Checked the latest version, still happens on update.
As you appear to be replacing the exe file in-place, shouldn't this workaround work (second suggestion) without the mentioned issue of a white square showing up?
https://github.com/electron-userland/electron-builder/issues/2514#issuecomment-524411415
I used to have the white squares after updating and realized that the updater was launching a versioned exe-file (e.g. signal-desktop-1.17.exe). After an update, this link was invalid, of course. Now with the app running in "Local\Programssignal-desktopSignal.exe", this would not be a problem, would it?
I have the same Problem. Taskbar Icon after Signal Update disappears. Have to repin it. I work on 3 different Pcs/Laptops. Have to repin it on every device after Update :) .
Is there any chance of this being fixed? Or at least explaining why it can't be fixed?
This has been going on for at least two years, and nothing has changed. Every time someone brings it up, the issue gets closed or referred to this thread, which has also sometimes been closed without resolution.
I _only_ use Signal because I can access it on both my Windows desktop and my iPhone, whereas I can't with iMessage. If the app is going to be updated this often, this bug makes it annoying and difficult to use, and makes me not want to update, which is also bad.
Happens to me in Linux since 1.32.3
Also frustrated with forced updates. If they're going to make it so you have to update, then regressions should be mercilessly hunted down and extinguished. This bug has been open since July 2018
Also happens to me, including the most recent update to v1.33.4. Please fix this, it's infuriating!
With 1.34 (64 bits deb version on ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS) present for a while (I add to add in /usr/share/applications/signal-desktop.desktop --use-tray-icon after Exec=/opt/Signal/signal-desktop : Exec=/opt/Signal/signal-desktop --use-tray-icon --no-sandbox %U), but it disappear when unlocking my session (after it has been locked).
The app is still running:

I need to close the app. and restart it to have again the icon in the taskbar
Just wanna drop a 'still happening' here. Very annoying.
Still happens. For me its a bit anonying, but i know how to get the icon back. But i finnaly convince my parents to use signal, and for them it's very confusing if the icon disappers all the time, and may be a reason for them to switch back to other non secure messengers.
google messeges is now end to end using signal so I'll just use that

Looks like a fix has been merged over at the electron-builder project:
https://github.com/electron-userland/electron-builder/pull/5312
This still did happen now with the v1.40.1 update.
