Signal-desktop: ["Feature" Request] Real Desktop client

Created on 19 May 2016  路  7Comments  路  Source: signalapp/Signal-Desktop

seriously why is everyone making stuff as a chrome "app"?
this is so annoying on SO many levels.
If you call it "something Desktop" then make it for desktop OSes and not for chrome firefox or any browser.

there are people who dont use and even more, dont WANT chrome (sandboxing tabs and stuff is nice but this thing is a RAM eater)

Telegram Dektop just as comparison, has 45MB Ram right now.
just opening authy leaves me with 13 Chrome processes which come in total close to 300MB and I have no open chrome window.

also let's not forget that Chrome is Google. I dont know how other vendors are with their browsers but I wouldnt like it if chrome could access ANYTHING of this and transfer it ANYWHERE, I mean signal is there for private communication and laying that in the hands of a company who is known for transferring a lot of stuff, well no thanks.
and before you ask, yes I have NOT downgraded to windows 10.

anyway It would be nice to have a REAL desktop client.

I'd start by reading the README

The issue template which you discarded says:

please note that this tracker is only for issues, not questions or comments.

well the question is WHERE to ask?
on the website I just found a support link, but I hear often enough, that it's just for support not for asking..

I'd start by reading the README

@2-4601 I read the README... as well as scoured the site, and the blog.

The only thing I could find was this:

Is there more information about this? If not, could someone please write a blog post and link it predominantly on the README to prevent these types of issues and to help restore some faith in Signal/Google's new partnership?

just so by the way I asked the support and got quite a lame excuse:

Signal Desktop Beta is distributed through the Chrome Webstore to keep you updated. Timely and automatic updates are perhaps the most effective security feature we could ask for, and not having them would be a real blow for Signal.

one of the worst excuses ever. similar to mozilla, it takes a while for the addon to be signed etc, so delaying the update. also a PC software can easily enforce updates. I answered them this but I got no response and they even tried to mark it as inactive because nothing happen for a while even though was the last person who replied.

@My1 Thanks for the reply. So their official excuse for tying Signal to Chrome is automatic updates? :\

yes but it is a bad one. as I said and as I also said it needs a lot more ram this way because of chrome.
