Obviously it is not integrated in any CAT tool so far, and without one it would be hard to translate it.

Do you mean https://docs.qownnotes.org? The website is generated from markdown files from https://github.com/pbek/QOwnNotes/tree/develop/docs/content. It relies on readthedocs which is using mkdocs to generating the website. The markdown files can't be feeded into crowdin nor do I know a way to handle translations at all with readthedocs and mkdocs. 😬

Basically I did something similar once already to collect a bilingual text for training a Software.

All I think I need to do is making a single excel file with all the text, it’s still extendible and not much more work than going through a document for several languages from a CAT tool (this is why I seldom use CAT tools.)

So if it’s possible that different versions of the same matter be uploaded, the whole translation and the editing procedures will be applied easily.

A CAT tool like Smartling could do the most work and it would be easy to re-insert the translation into the source code, then there will be 60 more versions of the documentation - my question here is if THATs possible, I can arrange the translation.

For people who don’t speak languages it would definitely be helpful.

Maybe we have a chance to get translated documentation. I'm currently working on recreating www.qownnotes.org with VuePress (static site generator with vue.js). I plan on integrating the documentation too there (there still is a loooot to do until I get there).

I'm still torn apart in that regard. The only thing that I see is to translate every file in https://github.com/pbek/QOwnNotes/tree/develop/webpage/src directly. But there will no mechanism (like with crowdin) to tell that an English file was updated and needs new translation... so we would always generate misleading or obsolete documentation. 😢 Do you by chance know of a way to monitor all files in that folder?

Those might solve the issue, Trados is very strong, has a free licence for one month. However possibly another software could take over.

The example is:

• If changes are found some web interface need to show those changes and translators need to be notified that changes occurred.

There basically will be a different directory tree for each translation. And it would be great if those were in-sync with the English version of the webpage.

I created an account and it seems there is a git integration (seems like you need to host that yourself) but the "documentation" https://github.com/smartcatai/smartcat-serge-sync-plugin doesn't even actually tell you how to use it...

I now added the necessary multi-site configuration and a copy of the English files in a new branch feature/german-webpage:

Never convert the markdown to html and copy the the rich text from a html preview into MS Word or something, this way important information is lost.

I could write a script that gathers the content of all English files together and puts it into one, big markdown file if that would be of any help. But then you would need to copy and paste all the single file parts of the big files back into the German markdown files after translation every time. Was I able to make clear what I'm talking about?

What if I would create one of those formats instead of above text file. Each item that needs translation could be the content of one markdown file. The key could be the file-name. Would you like that?

But still the translated items need to find their way back into markdown files.

You can also upload all markdown files one by one, manually creating folders in crowdin. Crowdin even masks links and such when in markdown files. The German markdow file has the links intact! I'm so deeply impressed!

I've already started to fix numerous translation error (please see comments in Crowdin). I also found some Crowdin Bugs with the ::: tip blocks, where the newline character is missing in the translated markdown files. That destroys a page completely. 😞

I found some powerful functions in the top left menu while translating:

1) shows how the source markdown file really looks
2) shows how the translated markdown file will look (you see there if markdown formatting is off)
3) you can replace strings in the whole translation language!

My idea about the tags is that I would make a difference. For example for Dutch audience it is perfectly okay if most of the technical terms remain English, because Dutch works like a lot with English terms. (Everyone knows that "all" the Dutch speak well English (because of their culture). But in Hungarian I wonder because although a loooot people speak English, some don't and that's why we make the Documentation and the program.

I would mention this - when I am thinking about a guideline to translate documentation.

Further there are the markdown and the shortcut tags.
Here I am somewhat insecure, but I think that if the tags have a fix and standardized translation like "Up" - "Nach Oben", it would read smooth for the German audience as well to have them translated.

And as for the really long tags, I don't really think that they have to stick to the original as being "part of the documentation" because if they can be translated very equally then that effect would remain, while also better understood.

If you want to let me know about certain tags that you feel being essential creations of QON and I should not translate as you want to present them, then might give me some clues.

Do you agree that I keep a different policy with the tags to translate? Basically they are marked up so they are visible parts of source.
But because this is a documentation that should be readable for a non-speaker of English too, I would translate most of the terms in a tag, that have equal meanings in Hungarian. In Dutch, where via allround lack of synchronization on TV even kids understand almost every English word, it would be more stylish to leave the common terms in English.

For German that's somewhere in between. I don't know if there is a meaningful more proper rule to handle tags' translations,.

They want to guarantee that we are getting enough attention. They want some details on the educational or charitable reasons about QOwnNotes, that will have people wanting to react on the volonteer job. Educational because of the open source maybe and charitable because QownNotes is free. Maybe you want to add something. It does not need to be necessarily on the documentation, but in the job description that I am writing.

Please formulate the answer in your own words, bc you have the best knowledge about how to put it so that Proz stuff will be satisfied...

Phew, I'm not sure about the motivation of the translators. 😅 Many may want to contribute because they like QOwnNotes and they maybe want to help people speaking their own language. Many may also translate because they once have already done so and Crowdin notifies them that new strings need translation. You can't leave those strings untranslated if you already have done so much, can't you? 😆

The reason I do everything is so many can profit from the work of one or a group of people. If I also translate things in other projects I do it for similar reasons.

I love reading and I love writing too, as well as languages, so translating is a kind of contemplation for me. I love the difference of form with the same content.

Otherwise I wouldn’t be able to sit many hours doing it.

I like to be part of something, and I enjoy the social component of working with others, and the art of making something available for others...

I think that my text is clumsy. And that’s that might be a reason they’re so picky with my postings.

We need to put it somewhat more sharp, so they’ve nothing to pick on it finally.

They’ve given rather ridiculous answers why they haven’t accept it.

It’s not much more that we can do for translators, because they really have a sort of monopoly on translators... and therefore very difficult to get such a post through while it certainly fulfills all the requirements
