Paper: Server caused a blue screen and corrupted files

Created on 12 Aug 2020  路  10Comments  路  Source: PaperMC/Paper

I was playing on my server as i normally do when I suddenly got a blue screen saying "Kernel Mode Heap Corruption". I reboot the PC and started the server back up and things looked fine until i tried leaving the room i was in and there was just a stone wall there. Went into spectator mode to get out and noticed all of the chunks has been rearranged.

This is why we take backups. If your computer blue screened, it's most likely not our fault but rather your JRE vendor's.

@diablo050189 Please check if your computer if it didn't have any viruses or badly made software.
You can also check if you made modifications to your computer and check for drivers updates.
Your windows will probably die soon because each time a blue screen occurs more errors are created in the system.
More errors = more blue screen until you can no longer boot your PC (Or you PC blue screen on boot)
It's clearly an issue with your system and not paper.

WTF. I am a certified licensed IT Specialist. I have been building and working on Electronics now for almost 20 years. There is nothing wrong with my PC, I have no viruses, Already checked drivers and they are all up to date, My PC is nowhere near death. I came here to report an issue in case there was an issue with the latest build to avoid the same thing happening to anyone else and instead of any help I just get treated like an idiot or something.

bluescreens can happen randomly due to cosmic radiation. It might not be your fault. The fact remains that your server bluescreened and due to that a huge amount of data corruption occured. If you do not have a backup of the server...then there is nothing that can be done.

Well, the log said which chunks were relocated to where, so maybe by writing a custom plugin which parses the log and places the chunks back, he could get his world back. It's a lot of effort though.

I really doubt chunk reordering is the only corruption caused by the blue screen..

Certified IT specialist (also what does that even mean? whom are you certified by exactly?) or not, backups are crucial. "Blue Screen" is a kernel panic, and they just happen sometimes. You should know that.

Did you ever find the paper client? If so, that might be the issue.

Yes, I make daily backups so that's not a problem, just wanted to report the issue in case it was caused by a paper issue or if someone who knew more about reading the logs could at least see if they could tell what caused the crash. When looking at windows logs around the crash I just see a bunch of memory errors before the crash.

logs provide 0 information around what caused a blue screen, your windows log screaming about memory errors hardly sounds like it's going to be caused by paper, but, I have no idea what those entail

Your best option would be to look at a dump and see where it occurred, but, the exception you got from the kernel suggests that it's not even in the scope of paper or the JVM
