Notepad3: NP3's Dropbox reoganized (instead of 1 folder now 3 --> Nightly, Experimental, Betas)

Created on 26 Apr 2018  ·  30Comments  ·  Source: rizonesoft/Notepad3

With Derek's ok.. I have reorganized the Dropbox folders into 3 folders as follows...
The NEW folder names are self explaining... I hope... for those that know..
only problem is having to check 3 folders instead of just 1 for updates....

https://www.dropbox.com/home/Notepad3/Downloads__Nightly-Dev-Builds
https://www.dropbox.com/home/Notepad3/Downloads__Experimental-Builds
https://www.dropbox.com/home/Notepad3/Downloads__Betas

hopefully if is ok with it new downloads will get sorted into the new folders... based on their type
Experimental = to test new features
Nightly(Experimental)

Okay. A few questions:

  • at official release date, the "Nightly-Dev-Builds" are moving into "Betas" directory?
  • when Experimental-Build ends (new feature quite stable) it might be integrated into next Nightly-Dev-Build, this is only visible on version numbering. How to mark that?

Can we cleanup the (old) "Betas" directory ?
Maybe keeping only first Beta after Release and last Beta before next Release - for all Beta-Ranges (Release-to-Release span), except the last Range.

Ed,:

  • can we switch from .zip to .7z (better compression)?
    Ed2.:
  • can we drop the .paf ? (the .7z has the PortableApps structure already)

@rizonesoft, @RaiKoHoff, @MelchiorGaspar
Questions / opinions:

  • Why "Betas" because in recent months, the name "Develop" was adopted instead of "Betas' ?
  • What is the purpose of the "Nightly" folder? I
  • Are 2 files not enough : "Develop" and "Experimental" ?
  • .7z is ok for me!
  • I have never used .paf for testing purposes, for me part, can be drop !

Nigthly folders are for builds released every day... dev builds...

so are we not using Beta type downloads anymore?

I put all the old betas in the new betas folder....

builds generally go like this..
releases, Release-Candidates, Betas, Alpha/experimental-builds
nighties are just builds released every day/night

the whole point of the reorganizing was/is to sort the downloads... into cleaner lists/folders...

if Derek ok with and/or likes to new folder layout... hopefully...

I don't touch the .paf builds either...

the Downloads__Experimental-Builds folder is for testing a new feature like when creating a separate git branch for temp testing a new feature...

so are we not using Beta type downloads anymore?

On March 3rd, there was a long conversation about: releases, Release-Candidates, Betas, Alpha/experimental-builds "https://github.com/rizonesoft/Notepad3/issues/395#issuecomment-369938513 and https://github.com/rizonesoft/Notepad3/issues/395#issuecomment-370133234 and ... 😕
From there, "RaiKoHoff" has adopted "develop" for its development and Derick "has also adopted "RC" for the pre-release period.

oohh..
I was in the hospital from mid November till March 26th 2018... :(

I can rename folders then.... or something...

I suggest waiting for comments/suggestions from Derick and RaiKoHoff, right? 😃

to figure out if he likes it in the end.. he did ok it already but... don't know if he will fully like it...

As I understand it, we don't really have nightlies for this project. We will often have one or more builds in a given day, but they are built on demand as the codebase changes rather than on a scheduled basis.

Which leaves us with the following:

  • "develop" (development) builds (these used to be called beta builds)
  • "xperimental" (experimental) builds
  • "RC" (release candidate) builds

I don't particularly like separating these out into folders. (I'm not even sure where the RC builds would go in the current folder structure.) I prefer just the list of builds in build number order. It's clear enough to me what type of build they are by their name, and I don't have to go hunting amongst multiple folders for the latest build. I can also see what is going on in the project in one view. You might make the argument that it reduces the number of folders in the list... but based on the past I expect the majority of builds re to be "develop" builds anyway... I don't think you will reduce the number significantly by moving out the experimental and RC builds.

I too have very rarely used the PAF builds... If these disappeared, it would not worry me.

@craigo- is right in his understanding of creating builds.
There will be, on rare occasions, two builds in parallel, if there is an "experimental" feature branch in addition to the main development branch. Since the version numbering is time-line oriented, there will be only a straight (maybe interleaved "develop <-> experimental" but still straight in time and build-number) development pipeline.
This may change in future (dreaming), if more developer are going to provide "beta" development builds of their local forks.

@craigo- it was just a lot of old folders in the betas folder.... I thought it could use some organizing.. Derek signed off on it.. so I did what I do best.. if you he doesn't like.. they can be redone or reverted... it helps sort out all the builds by type...

I'm not intending to put down your idea or work, @MelchiorGaspar... I just wanted to say that I don't find that particular level of organisation very useful. I haven't had to gather together all the Notepad3 builds of a particular type before, and I can't see why I'd ever want to. Others might find that useful.

The Dropbox did need some organisation (culling), having approached its free account capacity limit. This must be the most work we've collectively done between releases.

:-( ohh well...... :-(

Hello everyone, Me too, I'm not very happy with the NEW organisation on Dropbox with the same arguments developed by "craigo-" ! 😖

Well, I'll suggest a mid-way between the 2 organisations (compromise) : 😏

  • In the actual "Notepad3/Beta" folder: Go back to the "FORMER" organisation for all kinds of " NEW Current Betas" (develop & Xperimental)

  • Create (or rename) a folder to "Notepad3/Beta_Archives" and use it to keep all named folder: "BetaBuild_until_release_3.xxxxxx" and all other old (not use) "Folder/files"

The AIM is to maintain in ONE, CLEAN and TIDY place * All NEW* "Current Betas" (develop & Xperimental) files and that all other OLD Builds/Folders/Files are moved in another ONE CLEAN TIDY place too! 🤔

another unhappy camper/customer... lol.. >_>
One folder will pile up with old outdated builds of types... plus.. you have to dig at them to find new ones in the old betas folder..

with my organizing skill/way, this way organized neatly by type... and it is clean.. BY NOT MIXING experimental builds in with the daily/nightly continuous dev builds I can rename the folders at least...
but am waiting for a solid names... ohh well I will redo a bit... and see how it turns out...

and the old betas are in there own new folder.... for saving...

All that is left is to sort out a odd named build out of old betas, and add text files at the top of each folder detailing the folders info... like before..

@hpwamr I will work on it now a bit...

ok, new names..
in number order of which you should use...

  • Downloads__1__Developer Builds
  • Downloads__2__Experimental Builds
  • Downloads__3__Old Betas Archive

And you think a renaming and adding numbers 1, 2, 3 on the folder solve the problem! 👎 👎 👎
Here we are in a dialogue of the deaf ! 🙉 🙉 🙉
For my part, I argued enough ... 😠

@MelchiorGaspar Thank you for your efforts. It is appreciated. @craigo- @MelchiorGaspar @RaiKoHoff @hpwamr I personally think the DropBox distribution idea has run its course. And I'm working on a solution using Telegram. The way that will work makes more sense to me. You signup for a channel and when Beta builds are dropped in it, it is instantly downloadable by the members.

It has apps available for Windows and Android phones. Furthermore, there is no need to manually approve members and appart from sending files, we can send important messages. I created a channel for Rizonesoft here: https://t.me/rizone and you can download Telegram here: https://telegram.org

You guys can also use Telegram to chat with me if there is something important that needs my attention. Just use the following link: https://t.me/rizonesoft

Guys remember. Even though we do not always agree, we are all working towards the same goal.

@RaiKoHoff As soon as you have Telegram installed, I will make you administrator on the Channel to enable you to upload files to the channel. 😉

hmm.. is there anyway to use tg or access the downloads without installing anything..
I am a bit weary of trying unknown programs and having more running on my PC... O_o

there is also Discord app too its great! TEXT, VOICE, VIDEO, and FILE uploads!
and I already use it lol ;) :P

@MelchiorGaspar Telegram is secure and one of the biggest around. I already use it to support my programs. I also use WhatsApp. But WhatsApp is not secure. Telegram has end to end encryption that is a good feature.

@rizonesoft
ok... if you insist lol :-p ;-)
installed.. giving my phone # huh? lol ok....

You can always uninstall it if you really do not like it. 😄

but if I do no more beta downloads... I will be sad forevermore.. lol :P
to the most important program too me..

The good news is that your phone number is not visible in the channel, not even to the admin. Once you've signed up for the channel, give me a shout and we can do a little test with one of the latest betas.

@MelchiorGaspar Ok. Beta published. Please let me know if you can download it successfully.

I am done signing up.. but I can't seem to find a way to chat yet....

Use this link to chat with me: https://t.me/rizonesoft

This is what makes channels ideal. No unnecessary chat clutter on the channel.

I think, current Dropbox beta channel structure is fine for me.
Many thanx to @MelchiorGaspar and @hpwamr and @craigo- to take care for this stuff 😃 .

so its been reverted.... ooh well... next idea.... :( :(

In agreement with Derick Paybe "Rizonesoft's Owner", DropBox is organized as follows:

Only 2 folders :

- Notepad3/Beta (the former folder)

- Notepad3/Beta_Archives (a new folder)
  • Notepad3/Beta: is for All current betas (devolp/Xperimental/etc...) of RaiKoHoff (if there are a lot of betas then only 1 of 2 week(s) of betas are kept in this folder).
  • Notepad3/Beta_Archives: is for All old betas more than 1 of 2 week(s) (without .paf.exe) and All other old files/folders.
