I had the same issue, came looking at this issue on github
I have probably found a solution to this for whoever comes here looking.
It happens when you have not "opened a folder" in VScode and are just checking out/editing some files.

Thanks for reporting the issue @r-polott . Can you explain the scenario when you saw this error? Also can you provide the logs in order to investigate the issue? You can access them via the Live Share: Export Logs command from the command palette (ctrl + shift + p) and attach them to this issue.
