I've been using Godot for around a week or so, but I've been getting a very serious problem: in random instances, my whole computer freezes, including the cursor. I have to hard reset it.
It doesn't happen often enough that I can reproduce the issue (it really feels random), but it happens often enough that I already got this three times in the span of a week. If I had to guess what triggers it, i noticed it seems to happen more often during script editing, but I don't intend to try and reproduce this bug, hard-resetting is obviously something I want to avoid.
I'm liking the experience with Godot for now, so I'd love to get that fixed, as I can't use an editor that will bring my PC to a halt. Any ideas?
I got three freezes since the beginning of the month as well, on Windows 10, on a 2-years-old laptop.
I can't tell if that's due to Godot, but the editor was running those 3 times. How the freeze looked like was basically audio buffers getting starved (harsh ultra-fast repeating sound of whatever music was playing) and everything frozen. One time Windows was able to BSOD, the other 2 times I had to hard-reset. The cause of the freezes are unknown, the event log just says "Critical - Kernel Power", which means the computer unexpectedly restarted.
However, I've been using 3.0.2 for way longer than just this month, so it could be due to a Windows or driver update, or simply the fact our computers are failing. Also I use Godot quite often so correlation is biased :p
@Zylann I don't think Godot is able to freeze a computer, it simply lacks the privileges to do anything like this.
The fact the buffers repeat simply means the sound hardware DMA keeps looping because the computer froze and it was not fed. It's unrelated to audio itself.

- Some hardware get older faster... so yes, change laptop... (or no laptop)
I don't think Godot is able to freeze a computer, it simply lacks the privileges to do anything like this.
Well Godot is able to stress out the GPU drivers, which are increasingly bad lately on Windows and they have privileges to brick the kernel, so I wouldn't be surprised if Godot triggers GPU drivers bugs that make Windows explode.
It's worth mentioning that it only happens when Godot is open, while using Godot. I regularly utilize other software that is, or at least feels like, more intensive than Godot, and none of these completely freeze my machine. It feels like Godot triggers something it shouldn't, as I'm not even doing performance-intensive tasks (I just got into Godot, I didnt even have time to create something heavy).
complete spec could be useful
cpu/graphic card, drivers...
"intensive" is a bit vague, are you using other 3D softwares ?
CPU: Intel Core i3-5005U
Graphics: IntelHD 5500 (no idea which drivers, where do I even check?)
"intensive" is a bit vague, are you using other 3D softwares ?
It's very unlikely the problem is 3D. I don't even use 3D mode in Godot, and even if 2D uses the 3D space (like Unity), it's not like my projects even use enough objects. And I play "modern" 3D games regularly, and I get at most some slowness and strain (tryhard IntelHD), but nothing like absolute freezes.
Hi. Experiencing same issue. Sometimes, everything freezes, on first click mouse vanish and. alt-tab does not work, ctrl-alt-del does not work and all what i can do is to hard-shutdown whole laptop.

The editor has not frozen even once on my Nvidia GTX 2060 6GB card, so it could be something related to Intel Integrated graphics struggling to run modern GLES3 code?
Keep in mind that the average Intel iGPU tends to be very weak and less powerful than even the lower-end discrete cards, they might run better in Godot 3.1 when the GLES2 renderer is done.
I have both an Intel graphics chipset and an nVidia geforce 940M on my laptop, and I believe the latter was active at the time of the freeze.
But again, I can't say if that's due to Godot just because it happened when I had the editor open. One way to be more sure would be to wait for a freeze that happens while Godot isn't running. I can't even say if that's due to graphics as well^^
Edit: okay, my computer froze without Godot open. I can't believe it's dying already :'(
Interestingly, the dump indicates the error occurred into an Intel Graphics driver... (my main GPU is nVidia, Intel is the weak integrated one).
Got a new computer, all problems gone.
While that can't be discarded, I wouldn't bet it's a GLES issue, since not only my projects aren't particularly graphics-intensive (and also 2D), it happened often while editing scripts, not loading a scene or even editing a scene.
But i don't know about how the editor works, maybe the interface itself uses GLES3? Either way, i'd argue it's most likely from the editor UI
EDIT: I just read, by luck, the part in the Godot documentation where it says "The Godot editor is a Godot game". So it's indeed possible that it's a GPU issue based on this.
I have done little research (and few reboots) and I noticed something what can be important. I found this
(Please note, this can apply only to my machine. Freezing of computer can have dozens of reasons) :

I noticed it happens only if I terminate running game with "stop" button from inside of editor. If i stop game like this, sometimes, after one second or two, whole computer freeze. Fortunately for me, I have already done in-game system to exit application so I can avoid that button entirely. But it should be fixed.
I also noticed that this issue experiencing only developers who use integrated intel graphic card(laptop)
EDIT : According to further research, it happens only if you stop running game and have editor window switched to script editor. Someone mentioned it can be related to script editor, well, it was right.

@Garrom That's some great feedback! I'll try avoiding the close button as much as I can and I'll get back to report whether the freezes stopped or not.
By the way, do you know if closing the game by simply closing the window triggers the crash like the stop button?
@rafaelferreiraql I decided to use in-game menu to exit application, but on error application freezes so in-game systems does not work. Yes, closing window or using task manager does not trigger freeze. I'm doing it like that and no freeze yet.
Same issue happens three times within 2 days. The machine is freeze and I need to force reboot it.

Let me try classical version this week and see if error occurs

Similar issues are being occuring on my end as well. The interesting part is that the end result varies. Sometimes the editor simply stops working and closes itself, screen flashes black and everything else works properly. Sometimes the computer freezes altogether with the only solution being forced shutdown. Sometimes the sudden stop will cause BSOD to appear with errors Video_TDR_Failure and nvlddmkm.sys. It is vey difficult to pinpoint the origin of the issue. Things I've tryed so far: reinstalling Godot 3.0.2, installing previous versions 3.0, using mono version, updating all my drivers, doing a scan on both disc and memory, reinstalling nvidia drivers, my imagination is starting to run out as none of these seem to work and will result in the editor not responding after a couple of minutes.
There seems to be no pattern or specific actions that cause the freezing, happens also in empty projects whilst not doing anything. Some actions may have influence on how fast the editor stops responding such as changing tabs (viewing other programs).
My systems is freezing as well only when I use Godot.
To make sure it wasn't anything else I ran the following for 30 minutes
stress --vm-bytes $(awk '/MemAvailable/{printf "%d\n", $2 * 0.9;}' < /proc/meminfo)k --vm-keep -m 1 -c 7
And then I ran
gputest /test=fur /width=1920 /height=1080
For thirty minutes as well.
Finally, I ran memtest86+ for 5 passes with no errors so I'm fairly confident it's not my system.
Mine happens when I'm running a scene with F6 (it could happen if I hit play, but I haven't even setup a default scene yet).

Hi, you can test if that happens also with my build, my build has a lot of low-level changes, it is synched with master fom june, 1th, and I noticed a few differences ( e.g while sponza demo crashes the master it works in my build )
Yeah, can I just build the lastest Master from Git? If so I'll build it tonight.
Hmm, I switched to using godot-git (3.1.dev.custom_build.4da6216). I was in the editor for over three hours tonight with no system hangs.
Hi again, Godot master caused Windows to Blue-Screen on me in a recent run (but I have say, it remains a very rare event on my end). I would say you could go for dozens of runs over weeks on end without seeing it.
The 3D viewport was visible as well and the game where it happened is somewhat graphically intensive, it could very well be the drivers. I know Godot's new 3D engine has seen very little work in general since the initial release so that might be a factor as well.
Hello All,
Same situation here with Godot Editor, I'm on windows 7 and suffering from blue screen every 10 minutes . Godot 3.0.5, I'm on HP Laptop , corei5 with Intel Graphics card (Intel HD 5500)
I am experiencing the same problem.
OS: Windows 10 (64bit)
CPU: Intel Core i7-5500U
GPU: Intel HD 5500 / nVidia GeForce GTX 950M _I used both and in any case my PC froze_
Godot Version: 3.0.6
Based on my experience this issue _has_ to be related to the Godot Editor. I am able to play extensive hours of (rather) GPU expensive games such as Overwatch, League of Legends etc. without running into a freeze once.
The pattern is, as already mentioned, quite random. Sometimes it freezes when I search the built-in help, other times I edit some nodes or write scripts. The editor does not have to be focused. Quite often I browse the web or want to change my music, while the editor is open and my PC freezes.
In my case it also is not related to the 3D viewport since I am working on a 2D game.
I've noticed some freezes recently and I think this may be related to Windows Defender doing some shady things in the background.

I just tried to tease the Antimalware Service (MsMpEng.exe) and got some weird results.
I tried to suspend the MsMpEng.exe and Godot Editor stopped responding. Could it be related to File IO, File Watcher or something else?
Resuming the MsMpEng.exe process revives the Godot Editor.
I recorded a video of that using OBS and it worked fine, even with the MsMpEng.exe suspended.
Note: Windows freezes at the beginning of the video: 00:05, 00:11 and 00:26.
I am experiencing the same problem.

Godot Version: v3.0.6-stable_win64 and v3.0.6-stable_mono_win32
In random times, my whole computer freezes, including the cursor.
Occurs only while I work in editor.
Got the same problem over here too

Godot Version: Godot Engine v3.0.6.stable.official.8314054
I've been using my laptop for about 2 years with no problems or whatsoever (as far as I know). Ever since the new Godot update (not really sure which one somewhere in version 3.0 and above) my laptop freezes with the audio loops like @Zylann described after using the Godot Engine for a few minutes. Then after a few days the freezes keeps happening even when I'm not running Godot with a short blue screen of death, then afterwards a message with a dark background that says something about "no bootable devices found".
My father then sees it as a driver problem, then I have my driver replaced into a brand new one. I installed the Godot Engine and I have the same problem, without the blue screen of death and the "no bootable devices found" message. I'm just worried if my laptop will have the same problem again as with the old driver. Right now I just realized that my laptop is running Godot with the CPU, So I'll be running Godot with the GPU from now on. I'll give updates if the problem still occurs when running Godot with the GPU.
OS: Windows 10 64bit, x64 processor

Same issue. I first noticed the problem with version 3.0.4, and was hoping that version 3.0.6 might work a little better, but alas, the problem persists. I've been having this issue for about a while now. It's a bit maddening: sometimes my laptop will freeze up as much as 3 times in the span of 30 minutes, forcing me to do a hard reset. Quite frustrating.

Freezes the whole system and only when I run the game via the editor.
If run them both (Editor and Game) separately it corrupt the video.
Works flawlessly if run any alone.
The above happens to 3d games.

I'm experiencing the same issue, but with the only project that happened at this time was with '2D Physics Platformer' (rigid and kinematic) templates.
3 times the computer freezes and had to hard reset. It gets at 50% of GPU usage last time I check.
I tried with the '3D platformer demo' templant and it only used 20%.
Hmm, I switched to using godot-git (3.1.dev.custom_build.4da6216). I was in the editor for over three hours tonight with no system hangs.

Both versions full freeze latop when I work in Godot 2D editor.
After freeze I see last screen. Any keys doesn't work. Caps lock(LED) doesn't work. Full system freeze. Only long POWER key pressing helps.
This laptop I bought 3 years ago.
And full freezes(before GODOT) I saw about 2-3 times, it was in first 3 months of use.
Last 2 years I didn't see any full system freezes! GODOT remembered me old times when I bought the laptop.
Now GODOT is champion of System freezes. This happens every 3-5 hours work in GODOT.
I'm ready to help like testing/logging "polygon".
Did you try GLES2 in the alpha? @etalot
Did you try GLES2 in the alpha? @etalot
No. I need 2D mask in my project. Best that I found for myself is mask based on shader. Light mask is still broken and not useful. Shader mask is OK.
I tried run simple test project with shader mask in GLES2 mode, doesn't work(big white rectangle). After, I don't use GLES2.
Before, I thought maybe it's dirt system(Windows 10 was not reinstalled about 1 year). But now I reinstall my system. Now I have clean system(and updated to last 1803). Tried old video drivers(old about 1 year), and with newest(from laptop manufacture site). Same issue.
Last time before freeze one 2D sprite was selected and I just moved mouse to Scene tab, and system started slow down(like huge CPU load) for 1 second about, and then froze. I'll keep watch.
UPD: Tested GLES2 in alpha. No freeze for 2 days.
First day 2 times just Godot not responding. Once close window OK. Once kill process OK.
Once in debug window caught flow of "Object was deleted while awaiting a callback" messages.
I just was changing scale of sprite in Inspector Tab. Close window OK.
Second day no issue at all.
Happens to me too. It's definitely Godot as my laptop has never frozen in 3 years and froze/crashed 3 times since I started using Godot (yesterday). This happens randomly while I'm using the editor. I'm just using the sample game tutorial from the website, so nothing special.

hi, @godofgrunts.. are you using GLES3 or GLES2?
I think the default is GLES3 and I don't remember changing it.
To be honest, I think the issue is related to Intel HD drivers as I wasn't experiencing the crash on my AMD system.
I filed this bug a long time ago, and when those crashes stopped, my computer stopped crashing with the Editor.
Same thing for me: Godot's editor freezing my computer completely. The display no longer responds, the sound mutes, no more mouse or keyboard. Only solution, a hard reboot.
No sign before crashing: CPU / GPU / RAM usage / disk access, everything looks green.
It happens with the current version of Godot and the beta 3.1.
Same has been happening me for quite a while. My laptop doesn't freeze at all with Godot closed, and has never frozen before active use of Godot.

@KaidenTBIO Try updating your intel drivers to the latest version. That fixed it on my computer.
Last drivers for Intel HD 5500 on intel.com for now is:
Intel website and readme.txt say ver. 15.40.41.64.5058(win in adaper prop say ver: 20.19.15.5058)
In morning installed this driver, in 1 hour got freeze!
Actually I log drivers versions that I tried to use. In Autumn(I think in November) I see had been tested this version. Also I tested this vesions:
20.19.15.4531
15.40.26.64.4474
15.40.136.4703
All freezes.
Please tell version of drivers that you use from driver properties in Device manager.
I'm on Linux so that wouldn't help you, but it was my graphic drivers that were causing the crash.
My computer is a Samsung notebook, so graphic drivers depends on it. Only problem is, Samsung's updater doesn't see any more updates available for the graphics driver.
My current driver is on version 20.19.15.4549. Right now I'm trying to look into trying an update outside Samsung's updater, but for now I can't really do much, as far as I know.
Intel's Driver assistant detects mine as "updated", though there's a more recent version (20.19.15.5063). After trying to install it, it just borks.

Legitimately no idea on what to do.
Edit: I've updated my Godot to the stable 3.1 release (mono, still), and the freezes are still happening. This time, it happened while I was looking at an animation on an AnimationPlayer.
Possibly related; I've had a very similar problem while working in 3D. The editor will freeze, my cursor will disappear, the screen will go dark, return with the editor greyed out and the cursor available again, go dark again, return with the editor greyed out and cursor available. After the cursor returns, it can be moved without issue, but nothing can be clicked unless I am able to minimize Godot during the time the screen is reappearing, at which point I am able to resume mostly normal (but glitchy, as if refresh rate is broken) computer usage until I try to reopen Godot. If I do not minimize Godot, it will be frozen for about a minute before going through the cycle again.
It tends to happen when I am moving around the scene, so I suspect there may be something related to a right-click + w/a/s/d keybind?

After usual few hours work (0.5 - 4 hours) in a small OpenGL ES3 project the whole system begins rapidly slowing down: framerate, input responsiveness - everything slows down to a total halt in a few seconds. Same thing for me. Sound will stutter then Godot will become unresponsive (just shows the time icon) then after 15-30 seconds I get the inevitable BSOD saying DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE, or less frequently DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION.
Laptop has never BSODed before Godot. I even drastically under-clocked the CPU to stop any sort of throttling and tried putting the fans on max to see if it was a thermal issue but that did nothing.
Normal gaming and everything else is fine. I have suspicions it might be something to do with Intel Speed Step technology but can't confirm anything. It's hard to detect what the problem might be as I can't see anything obvious in the event logs.

I've had some BSOD reboots while running Godot 3 in GLES2 mode recently (never before with Godot 2), but I couldn't tell why. The only thing I noticed was that it was always while I left godot running in the background while I went off to the internet watching some live streams. So I started shutting down Godot before doing any of that, and I had no more system crashes the last few days.
That said, BSODs aren't new on my system. Occasionally I find an app or another that seems to trigger them.

OK, so I believe I have sorted my issue by performing a chipset driver update. I thought I had done this before by I might have gotten distracted and only thought that I had done it.
Anyway, if it helps anyone.
I Think if it happens to so many people then its Godot, including me. My laptop isn't exactly anywhere near where a laptop for game design should be. i5 4 5200u, Intel HD graphics 5500
I get this issue regularly too, and my pc can run games like CitiesSkylines, Anno2205 and ARK: Survival Evolved.
The Godot editor likely executes some instruction that is not compatible with all hosts, because I see most people reporting this use Intel, which is known to have compatibility issues with modern rendering software. And yes, my drivers are current. A solution would be appreciated!
If hundreds of people report the same issue listing the same technology, likely it's the software that should adapt to the drivers, not the converse.
I'm having this issue too (with more frequency using v3.2 stable it seems). I also have an Intel i5 5200U and Intel HD graphics 5500. I've tried updating all drivers to latest but still have the same problem.
I'm having some system freezes again.
When I commented before, freezes happened in specific programs and only in Windows. These freezes have stopped happening for no apparent reason.
https://github.com/godotengine/godot/issues/18871#issuecomment-410304042
Now the editor is freezing the entire system for a few seconds. I think this new behavior is not related to the freezes that I reported before.
I don't remember experiencing this kind of freezing in export templates btw.
