Gitmoji: ๐Ÿ›  for adding dev/util tools

Created on 25 Apr 2018  ยท  29Comments  ยท  Source: carloscuesta/gitmoji

Hello @carloscuesta :sunglasses:!

  • Emoji: ๐Ÿ›
  • Code: :hammer_and_wrench:
  • Description: Adding development/util tools

Reason: I never know what emoji to use when I commit reusable helper or util functions, or if I implement a development tool into the project.
I am quite happy to do the PR for this, just checking if it would be of any use for anyone.

So probably we just start a vote. Here are the different propositions:

  • Vote for :man_technologist: :man_technologist: using ๐Ÿš€
  • Vote for :sunglasses: :sunglasses: using โค๏ธ
  • Vote for   using ๐ŸŽ‰
  • Vote for :computer: :computer: using ๐Ÿ˜„

Me neither! lol :bowtie: Thanks a mint! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Hi @Tydax,

This is a good idea to represent dev tools with this emoji.

However, may I suggest :

  • Emoji : :wrench:
  • Code : :wrench:

:hammer_and_wrench: seems not tout bรฉ compatible with gitlab (not tested) prefered this since it's compatible with more service

@see https://www.webpagefx.com/tools/emoji-cheat-sheet/

@waghanza ๐Ÿ”ง is currently used for 'Changing configuration files.'

I'm also in favor of ๐Ÿ›  I'm currently using ๐Ÿ‘ท whenever I'm fidling around with webpack config files.

Copy-paste from https://github.com/carloscuesta/gitmoji/issues/428#issuecomment-630639463:

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ is not supported by bitbucket

Yeah, I feel like there would be good to have a DX emoji, like we have a Improve user experience, we could have a Improve developer experience, most of the time I can use :recycle:, but once I was editing the pull_request_template, literally to make it easier to write it (we put the jira link there, but the link was missing, anyway, not important), so it wasn't a proper refactor ... it was a DX commit

But yeah, we need to change the emoji if we are going to add this :D

I agree we should instead create a gitmoji for Improve developer experience, I would use it a lot lol.
What about ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป ?

I agree we should instead create a gitmoji for Improve developer experience, I would use it a lot lol.
What about :man_technologist:?

I'd use :sunglasses: cuz we are more badass with glasses and we don't enforce gender :D

we are more badass with glasses

Agreed !

we don't enforce gender

I honestly don't care about this though, I think that all the drama regarding emoji gender and emoji skin color is useless and meaningless.

I really like the idea ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป of this for DX!

I honestly don't care about this though, I think that all the drama regarding emoji gender and emoji skin color is useless and meaningless.

Well, it's never about you, it's about people that don't feel great with those stuff, personally I don't see ANY problem in this kinda of "drama" as you call, but I utmostly don't wanna people to feel bad because of a silly reason as an emoji, it's just that.

Well, I think that people who feel bad about emojis shouldn't. How is it a big deal ? These are just vector pictures using to express emotions in text content.

I agreed with @vhoyer :+1: I also don't have any problem with gender but it lead to complicated question like why use ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป instead of ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป.

Moreover this emoji is a ZWJ Sequence so not really optional for gitmoji.

Why not just use ๐Ÿ’ป?

Computer looks good also!

why use ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป instead of ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป

By default. Because that's how linguistics work. Why does it have to be so complicated ?

Why not just use ๐Ÿ’ป?

Well, because it only shows a computer, but not a developer. It could match any other context. It's confusing.

Well @KaKi87 this emoji still a ZWJ Sequence so it doesn't have a shortcodes like :computer: since its a mix of :man: and :computer:

So impossible to use for gitmoji

well, @KaKi87 did agree with ๐Ÿ˜Ž, so we could use it? ๐Ÿ˜Š

Actually we could just use the neutral :technologist: ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป emoji.

I'm sorry @KaKi87 but I don't really like the ๐Ÿ˜Ž emoji since it doesn't really illustrate its action.

I don't know about you but I see two emojis in one there :

And I actually don't care about glasses vs. technologist, what I really care about is that we shouldn't use an emoji that represents an object instead of a person, because this subject is actually focused on developer [aka people] experience.

Unless, the emoji explicitly shows something related to development or source code, but AFAIK there is no such emoji, in unicode at least.

The fact that we're actually stucked because of fucking genders is really pissing me off.

Sorry can't we just use tools (๐Ÿ›  ) for tooling?

We can't because #466 is also related to developer experience.

What do you think of having   instead of ๐Ÿ˜Ž? I find it funnier and more original.

Well, I'm still in favor of ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป before all but I'm not against ๐Ÿค“ either.

So probably we just start a vote. Here are the different propositions:

Any issue with the vote @wouterds? ๐Ÿ˜… Did I miss something?

Don't like any of the suggestions ๐Ÿ˜… , but feel free to go-ahead ๐Ÿ‘

@wouterds If you have other ideas feel free to share them ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ‘

Well, it's because he's actually in favor of the original idea : creating a specific gitmoji for utils.

Let's use . Okay ?
