Eddiebot: # Add daughter/son to ignore-list

Description

as many would agree the word "Daughter" and "Son" is something most people are used to referring their "own" children to and substituting it for the word "child" is a bit over the heap. i understand the diversity of the world nowadays but this is kinda too much ..

Adding them to the ignore-list would work for our use-case, since most people would be using that t refer to their own children/child. :+1:
But IMHO, I wouldn't call it "too much", the library used by the bot(alex.js) is much more focused on flagging inconsiderate writing, and it needs a few configs to set it up for chatting(this language flagging feature is still in development and the bot loses at identifying context).
However, the library in its own right flags the word, in order to catch inconsiderate writing of this sort:
(*trigger warning- this is slightly sexist, however, this is an example of what is inconsiderate and wrong writing and why this is a thing on the library)

It's great having you contribute to this project

Feel free to raise an Issue! Welcome to the community

If you would like to continue contributing to open source and would like to do it with an awesome inclusive community, you should join our Discord chat and our GitHub Organisation - we help and encourage each other to contribute to open source little and often 🤓 . Any questions let us know.

Great example @Vyvy-vi 👍 - unfortunately I think people overlook and misunderstand the importance of inclusive language. Using words like child is not more difficult or harder to use, in fact it has less letters 😂 .

However, I am not against adding it to our ignore list.

But I will change the label form bug to enhancement

thank you, but the issue with it isn't the length(or letters) but rather the fact that it is what most people refer to their "own" children too. i find it hard to believe someone would be offended by someone else's child?

It is more about the assumption. How many times has this happened?

  • person 1: I need to pick up my child from football
  • person 2: sure, go get your son and we can talk later

why is it son? the assumption is made football is only for boys. It is 2021, anyone can do anything and be anything they choose to be 💪

hmm understandable, but that example is pretty rare and pretty doubtful to happen.. but i guess people of all thoughts exist. again sorry if this is wrong of me just wanted to give my thoughts .:))

no problem, I think your goal is correct, we should add it to the ignore list, because it is something we rarely talk about, we talk about open source not family stuff. But I think it is the way you wrote - something we are all always learning is how to communicate better. It is usually not what we say but the way we say it, as a lot gets interpreted differently by different people 🤓

should i close it then?. also thanks for the time i know you're pretty with all the opensourceroids u got going on!

I think leave it open and we should add it to the ignore list 👍

no problem, I am always learning too, so these conversations are good to have, to help me / us understand different perspectives 🤓

As possibly the one person who has been flagged multiple times when answering questions about my children, I would say yes, please add "daughter" to the ignore list. However, more importantly, we should find a way to address context.

I know it is not a library we wrote ourselves, but for the sanity of everyone using the library, there needs to be some context.

Q: I like that picture. Where is it from?
A: [speaking about my affair] Oh thanks. My daughter drew it.

The fact that I used "my" before daughter should count for something. Had I used "their daughter", then flagging "daughter" would make sense to me; as that would signify an assumption on my part.

perhaps, we could process the content from the text through something else, before sending to Alex, to account for context ?
(not sure if there's a lib for that)
