Cwa-app-ios: Support link preview pop-up in iOS

Created on 15 Feb 2021  路  12Comments  路  Source: corona-warn-app/cwa-app-ios

Current Implementation

Currently (v. 1.12.1, v. 1.13, v 1.14.3), when holding links, nothing happens, except for the "New Features" screen which is showing after an app update, there the preview works.

Suggested Enhancement

Support link previews everywhere in the app, like Safari or GitHub does (Screen recording).

Expected Benefits

Consistency with the "New Features" screen and most other iOS apps. Also, the user has quick(er) access to content.

@Ein-Tim

The screen recording looks like you have opened https://www.coronawarn.app/de/faq/#cause2001 in a web browser and you are holding down the link to https://github.com/corona-warn-app/cwa-app-android/issues/968, then you get a preview (Vorschau) shown. This is an example of how you would like the CWA app to work if you press on a link.

Could you give an example in the CWA app where you would like a preview to appear after holding down a link?

Also if you could give an example of another app where holding down a link gives a preview, that would be helpful.

Are you only asking for this on iOS not on Android?

If I try your sequence under Android using the Google Chrome Browser then I don't get a preview I just get a menu, similar to yours, but without a preview.

Hold down link

Correct.

Could you give an example in the CWA app where you would like a preview to appear after holding down a link?

For sure.

Examples

Link in statistics info screen:

(iOS link to code)

Link in risk card (only if you had low risk encounters):

(iOS linkt to code)

Also if you could give an example of another app where holding down a link gives a preview, that would be helpful.

For example Twitter:

For sure not! I didn't know that Android has something similar, I will change the title.

@Ein-Tim

Thanks for your concrete examples. I tried out Twitter on Android, using exactly the RKI post you showed and I could not see any preview. So it seems that web preview is not a built-in function for Android. I didn't think it was built in, but I wanted to check first with an example of exactly the same app that you are using on iOS before making any assumption.

I think your wishlist item is only applicable to iOS in that case, not to Android. I didn't mean to imply it could be done on Android when I asked you about your intentions. I was just trying to clarify your expectations, since the wishlist repo is generally for requests which apply to both iOS and Android.

Thanks for the feedback and cross checking @MikeMcC399!

I could change the repo, but we already have some items here in the wishlist which are only applicable for iOS (f.e.: https://github.com/corona-warn-app/cwa-wishlist/issues/26).

But let's see what the Open-Source-Team says.

Strangely, the link preview is working as intended in the "New Feature" screen:

@Ein-Tim ok, can you update your OP with the latest comment, please. I will then create a story. Many thanks.

@MikeMcC399 @Ein-Tim Do I understand correctly that is feature is iOS only? In that case, we would move to iOS repo. Thanks.

@dsarkar

Updated OP & yes only for iOS, so please move.

Thanks

@Ein-Tim I am planning to do an issue [Overview] UX/UI with this issue in the wishlist repo, the translucent tab bar, etc. If you are happy to create such an issue go ahead, please. These overviews help quite a lot to get organized and direct the attention of the team to certain topics.

@dsarkar

I can't create it right now but I will create one today afternoon, if this is ok for you. 馃憤

@dsarkar Please see https://github.com/corona-warn-app/cwa-wishlist/issues/386 for the overview.
I will extend it with Android issues soon, but feel free to already add some.
