Calculator: Older Releases

Created on 7 Mar 2019  路  7Comments  路  Source: microsoft/calculator

It would be nice to have an OSS release of Calculator at various points in its history - perhaps the last version targeting each major Windows version.

It would certainly be nice to have a pre-UWP release anyhow :)

question won't fix

I'm no expert here, but I'm pretty sure Microsoft won't release old OS programs code, other than possibly Windows 1/2 some day. Honestly, why bother with something where there's already modern, up to date alternatives?

There's very few UFW apps that are worth using, and the ones which I do use don't have non-UFW alternatives.

You're right about that!

It's probably not in Microsoft's best interest, based on their indicated direction for development of applications, APIs, OS, and developer tools, but _many_ of us do not like the UWP performance, appearance, etc. and would rather take a working source, compile it for backward compatibility with the Win32 API, and use it on Windows 10 or even an earlier version of windows (like Windows 7), especially if it retains a nice 3D Skeuomorphic appearance.

I think I speak for a very large number of 'legacy' windows users when I point this out.

It would really be great if we had the history of releases. But at least from now on, we could get a release every month with the progress that has been made in the app.
Hope Microsoft could help us with it.
Have a great day guys :)

This is your friendly Microsoft Issue Bot. I've seen this issue come in and have gone to tell a human about it.

@jamierocks thanks for the suggestion! We know there's interest in seeing the history of the calculator code. Having _finally_ finished getting the code in _this_ repo on GitHub, we'd like to focus on making improvements to the current version of Calculator before we think about digging up older versions.

@sbenstewart we've been releasing Calculator updates to the Microsoft Store roughly once per month for a while now, and we intend to keep doing that now that we're on GitHub. We'll work on posting the changelog for each version so people know what improvements are shipping. :) cc: @grochocki

I would also like to see how calculator's code pre-UWP was.

With that said, I would love to see a non-UFW Calculator on Windows 10 though. There's very few UFW apps that are worth using, and the ones which I do use don't have non-UFW alternatives.

Closing, since this question appears to have been answered. If there are specific problems with the current version (launch performance, crashes on launch, etc.) please file separate issues with more details so we can investigate further.
