Some of my podcasts have quite long episodes. It is not uncommon that I can happily do without whole chapters. There should be a mechanism (checkboxes) to exclude chapters from playback.
Example: Episode has 3 chapters. The second one is boring and I disable it. At the end of the first chapter, we directly jump to the start of the third.
I imagine it would be nice indeed to be able to skip chapters, but not sure about the solution with the checkboxes (though atm I can't think of another simple solution). If better support for akipping chapters is the aim, introducing a 'skip chapter' button could be handy; that way one doesn't have to decide in advance which chapters to disable. This would go in the playback buttons and could maybe replace the fast forward button for chaptered episodes (possibly let user decide if they want this replacement with a setting).
How about long-pressing fast forward? There could be pop-up options Skip chapter (and replay chapter for the rewind button) like on the keyboard for additional letters.
Currently long-press is used to set fast forward times (5, 10, x seconds). Don't think it's smart to replace this functionality only for chaptered episodes, because there is no visual cue for this changed behaviour(?)
Do all the episodes in a feed have the same number of chapters or do they differ?
What if 'skip' would skip chapters _in_ the episode before skipping to the next episode?
They differ, of course.
Well, not sure if having a setting for the skip button makes much sense. If you really want to skip the current chapter, you can just go to the chapter view and click the corresponding play (jump?) button.
Whereas I'd like to disable some chapters in advance (e.g. I also disable album tracks in iTunes).
Different approach to that idea:
I would like to see two different approaches:
