Antennapod: Occasionally unexpectedly skips entire episode(s)

I'm afraid this is going to be a hard to reproduce bug as it only does this to me maybe one in fifty times, but it's sufficiently annoying and it happens regularly enough to seem worth reporting.

I haven't spotted specific patterns that trigger it but I think it only happens when I'm using my bluetooth headphones, and when I use the play button on them to resume playback. What I expect to happen is that the podcast episode I'm half-way through starts, what actually happens is the episode gets marked as played and deleted (I don't have it configured to keep files otherwise I run out of space). Sometimes it'll also delete the next couple of episodes I have queued as well.

This is infuriating if I'm out as I can't re-download the ~150mb file even over 3g as it's just not reliable enough so I don't get to listen to what I had queued until I'm home again. It's also minorly annoying because I have to find my place in the episode again when I've re-downloaded it.

Love the app, and it keeps getting better with every update.

version info:

  • Google Nexus 4
  • CyanogenMod 12-20150322-NIGHTLY-mako / Android 5.0.2 (shh don't tell anyone I don't like updates, people keep breaking things)
  • f-droid
  • antennapod 1.3.1 (2f55256)

Usually listening to NoAgenda (in the morning!) http://feed.nashownotes.com/rss.xml but that could be coincidence as that's most of my listening material.

Sorry I haven't been able to pin this down further.

confirmed bug

This certainly sounds bad. We can keep an eye out for this problem, but as you say, we don't have much to go on at the moment.

It just did it again, after a fresh install of cyanogen mod & antenapod. I ran adb logcat and grabbed a copy a soon as it had done it - https://gist.github.com/timabell/07e04f160b816cb0d09f

I'd had the show paused for some time and left my bluetooth speaker connected but not doing anything. I then hit the "play" button on the bluetooth speaker, about 1/4 second of that show's audio came out of the speaker before antennapod jumped to the next show even though I was still 15mins from the end.

This happens for me every time I try to skip ahead or back in an episode using my Philips SHB7100 BT headset or the original Pebble watch. I used to be able to skip by holding the volume button on the phone as well, but I think that behaves the same now.
I'm on CM 12.1 on a Samsung GT-I9300.
Really eats bandwidth to have to re-download shows when fiddling around just trying to pause or change volume...

Skipping using the app buttons works fine.

I'm currently in the testing program, version 1.4.0.1 (e76fcd0).

Btw, this appears related to: #1080

That's certainly not good.

Until we can figure out what's wrong: in 1.4.0.1 there's currently a setting "Skip Removes Episodes" that might, at least, solve the bandwidth problem. If that setting _is not_ checked then the episode won't be removed when the program accidentally skips, then you won't need to re-download anything.

You'll also have to turn off 'auto-delete'

Interesting; I mostly use the Philips SHB9100 headphones and I think that's the only device I've seen the problem with, so maybe it's something these headphones do. It didn't occur to me that could be significant at the time but now there's another report with a Philips device maybe it is.

I can confirm this is Bluetooth related, I have skip set to skip to the next episode. When I use a the notification to skip, everything works. When I use any Bluetooth device it skulls the rest odd the current episode and the next and plays what would be the third in queue This, btw, includes using the notification on my android wear device. I've seen this on two car radios, a headset, and android wear. Its occurred on two different phones one with kit Kat and one with nougat.

I never use bluetooth and I have the problem (almost) every week, with the same podcast. I can hear the pre-show advertisement in the beginning of the episode, then the 50min episode is skipped.

Same issue here using a Jabra BT620s bluetooth headset.

Happens occasionally to me. Regular bluetooth headphone user. Skips the episode and all episodes downloaded. Unable to restart episodes without refreshing app. Last time this happened it auto deleted all of the files. I do not have auto delete enabled. Android version 9. App version 1.7.2b

Has anyone been able to reliably replicate this problem on 2.1.2?

I'm not currently using any headphones that have back/forward buttons so couldn't tell you I'm afraid. Still my fav player :1st_place_medal:

I haven't encountered this issue with recent versions of AntennaPod anymore.

It haven't found this issue on newer versions either.

Okay, looks like it is solved :)
