Xrdp: Black screen - Closed socket 19 (AF_UNIX) error

Created on 24 Jun 2017  ·  63Comments  ·  Source: neutrinolabs/xrdp

Installing from source, I get these errors and black screen:

Jun 24 01:58:34 server1 xrdp[27779]: (27779)(140475567515392)[DEBUG] Closed socket 19 (AF_UNIX)

Jun 24 01:58:48 server1 xrdp[27779]: (27779)(140475567515392)[DEBUG] Closed socket 19 (AF_UNIX)
Jun 24 01:58:52 server1 xrdp[27779]: (27779)(140475567515392)[DEBUG] Closed socket 19 (AF_UNIX)

Any idea what could be causing?

@zertrin xorgxrdp must be built with xserver 1.19 if you want to run xorgxrdp with xserver 1.19. Please sync xserver versions when being built and being run. Meaning, if you want to use -hwe-16.04 suffixed packages, -dev packages also need to be -hwe-16.04 suffixed. Make sure xserver-xorg-dev uninstalled and xserver-xorg-dev-hwe-16.04 installed.

$ dpkg -la |grep xserver-xorg
ii xserver-xorg-core-hwe-16.04 2:1.19.3-1ubuntu1~16.04.2 amd64 Xorg X server - core server
ii xserver-xorg-dev-hwe-16.04 2:1.19.3-1ubuntu1~16.04.2 amd64 Xorg X server - development files

Now I get no ABI errors with xserver 1.19 (xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04). Working fine for me.

Stay the blank screen, timeout will occur and maybe you'll see some messages in dialog.

Isn't your issue /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config written in README.Debian?
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-remote/xrdp.git/tree/debian/README.Debian

I have seen this if the virtual channels sockets are correctly set up.

Isn't it the same as described in #764?

@metalefty

I tried installing xserver-xorg-legacy and it broke a bunch of stuff and I ended up removing it. This on Ubuntu 16.04

/etc/X11/Xwrapper.config doesn't exist (without X11-common or some other package?)

I'm not sure about Debian and Xwrapper.config doesn't exist for me, too.
Creating it and set allowed_users=anybody worked for me.

@metalefty I created the file, with allowed_users=anybody still get black screen.

Ok, so this is weird to me. If I move the window manager launch (mate-session, in my case) to the top of the wm_start() function in /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh, it launches ok:

#start the window manager
wm_start()
{
  mate-session

  if [ -r /etc/default/locale ]; then
    . /etc/default/locale
    export LANG LANGUAGE
  fi

  # debian
  if [ -r /etc/X11/Xsession ]; then
    pre_start
# mate-session
# . /etc/X11/Xsession
    post_start
    exit 0
  fi

However, if it's after the locale check and after pre_start function (e.g. where Xsession would normally launch) -- I get the black screen and the AF_UNIX errors.

Ideas? Shouldn't mate-session be after pre_start, where Xsession would otherwise launch?

Did you check if you got the Xsession file in place?

@speidy Yes, I checked both the test statements.

johnar@nethop1-eastus2:~$ ./start.sh
found locale
found Xsession
johnar@nethop1-eastus2:~$ cat start.sh
if [ -r /etc/default/locale ]; then
    #. /etc/default/locale
    echo "found locale"
    #export LANG LANGUAGE
  fi
  if [ -r /etc/X11/Xsession ]; then
    echo "found Xsession"
# pre_start
# mate-session
# . /etc/X11/Xsession
# post_start
    exit 0
  fi

johnar@nethop1-eastus2:~$ ls -lrt /etc/X11/Xsession
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3730 Mar 4 2016 /etc/X11/Xsession

@johnarnold Check my last post (MATE related) here #765 What xrdp session type are you using for connection? Because Xorg session working fine for me on Ubuntu 16.04...
xorgxrdp 0.2.2-0ubuntu1
xrdp 0.9.2-0ubuntu1

I too have this issue.

Archlinux on both sides. Spent the better part of the day trying to learn the ins and outs of xrdp.

Following the debian instructions does not help, although I couldn't test xorg-server-legacy because that doesn't seem to exist for Arch.

@metalefty you've posted in multiple issues that setting Xsession to allowed_users=anybody is the fix, but it's not a fix, at least not for Ubuntu 16.04 (and prob others).

Built off latest source:

johnar@netdev1-westus2:~$ cat /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config
allowed_users=anybody
johnar@netdev1-westus2:~$ xrdp --version

Still broken. I have some servers with 0.9.2 working, some with 0.9.3 working, most are not working with either. Configs are identical (deployed via ansible). Open to suggestions on how to debug.

@johnarnold
I don't mean that is always a fix. Just I wanted to clarify what is the real issue.
I have some different approaches depending on whether the issue is allowed_users=anybody or not.

@metalefty ok cool. I'm open to ANY ideas at this point. What's interesting is that if I wait long enough, the "login had an error" box comes up, and you go back to the blue screen with the login prompt. So it seems like either something is wrong with sesman, or when startwm.sh runs it's not launching the window manager properly.

I've tried simplifying my startwm.sh to just run mate-session and nothing else, for simplicity, and still get the same problem.

Can you run xrdp-sesman in foreground and see the output? Current xrdp doesn't output all logs to log file but some logs are written to stdout. This is why you need to run xrdp-sesman in foreground to see what's happening. The points are:

  • "is Xorg started properly?"
  • "is WM staerted properly?"

You'll be able to these points by seeing foreground log.

This is the most simple example of startwm.sh. Please also try this if running only mate-session doesn't help.

#!/bin/sh
xterm

BTW, I've started to improve logging
https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xrdp/wiki/Reworking-logs

with the simple startwm.sh:

first try, running from /var/log (so it couldn't create all logfiles)

this fairly reeks of more suid issues. I (re)installed xserver-xorg-legacy and reconfigured to allow anybody, same results.

I've setup Ubuntu 16.04 environment maybe as same as yours overall.

If Xorg with xrdp module (called xorgxrdp) is properly stating, the output will be like this.

X.Org X Server 1.18.4

The difference between my Xorg log and yours is this line. Can you confirm xrdp's xorg.conf is properly located? Typically it is located /etc/X11/xrdp/xorg.conf.

(++) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xrdp/xorg.conf"

And please also try Xorg :10 # not specifying config file? It will fail with the following error but it is normal.

(EE) parse_vt_settings: Cannot open /dev/tty0 (Permission denied)

I tried Xorg :10 -config /etc/X11/not-existing-xorg.conf and it shows the permission error above. At least for me, the Xorg's permission error occurs when not specifying config file or config file doesn't exist. I suspect your /etc/X11/xrdp/xorg.conf doesn't exist.

Looks like it's missing:

johnar@netdev1-westus2:~$ sudo ls /etc/X11/xrdp
ls: cannot access '/etc/X11/xrdp': No such file or directory
johnar@netdev1-westus2:~$ sudo ls /etc/X11/
app-defaults fonts rgb.txt xinit xkb Xreset Xreset.d Xresources Xsession Xsession.d Xsession.options Xwrapper.config

That seems to be the root cause of your issue. xorgxrdp is not properly installed.

Typically, xorgxrdp installs these files. *.la files may not be installed depending on environment.

/usr/lib/xorg/modules/libxorgxrdp.a
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/xrdpdev_drv.la

/usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/xrdpkeyb_drv.a
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/libxorgxrdp.la

I happen to have libxfont-dev installed too...

johnar@netdev1-westus2:/var/tmp/git/neutrinolabs/xorgxrdp$ apt-cache policy libxfont-dev
libxfont-dev:
  Installed: 1:2.0.1-3~ubuntu16.04.1

It is neutrinolabs/xorgxrdp#100.

Install either pair of packages.

  • xserver-xorg-dev & libxfont1-dev
  • xserver-xorg-dev-hwe-16.04 & libxfont-dev.

Unfortunately this is not the cause of my issue- the arch package correctly installs that xrdp folder.

~/.xorgxrdp.10.log http://sprunge.us/WDaE
/var/log/xrdp.log http://sprunge.us/LdXj
/var/log/xrdp-sesman.log http://sprunge.us/VILg

Interesting. I wasn't able to install the first or second pair, due to repo issues (503)...

I can confirm that this resolved my issues under Ubuntu 16.04. I was able to launch mate-session using my normal startwm.sh, no issues. Hope it helps someone else too. Maybe an update of the build dependencies in the readme's is in order.

Thank you @metalefty for the support!

Well, guess i'm not getting off "that easy." I tried to repeat my success on another server, and no joy. This time i'm not getting the compile error on xfonts, and the config file loads for xorgrdp, but I still get the permissions error:

Yes, xrdp module is not loaded due to ABI mismatch. It leads Xorg to the same result as if nonexistent config file specified.

Can you try xserver-xorg-dev & libxfont1-dev pair? It worked for me.
I tried xserver-xorg-dev-hwe-16.04 & libxfont-dev pair, I got the same result as yours.

Any thoughts on what I could try @metalefty ?

@Link-Satonaka you may want to open a separate issue, just to minimize confusion.

@metalefty

For some reason I just can't install libxfont1-dev... even after apt-get purge libxfont-dev

Unpacking libxfont1-dev (1:1.5.1-1ubuntu0.16.04.1) ...
dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/libxfont1-dev_1%3a1.5.1-1ubuntu0.16.04.1_amd64.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite '/usr/share/doc/libxfont-dev/fontlib.html', which is also in package libxfont-dev 1:2.0.1-3~ubuntu16.04.1

I tried downloading the latest libxfont1-dev from another mirror just to confirm it's not an issue with the mirror I'm using, but I get the same result. Tried clearing apt cache, tried forcing install, no go. I'm curious how you were able to get libxfont1-dev to install?

Ugh. ok. I think the problem there was that xserver-xorg-dev depends on (forces reinstall of) libxfont-dev, causing the conflict with libxfont1-dev. Can't install xserver-xorg-dev before libxfont1-dev or it blows up. Can't install at the same time or it blows up.

Have to do:
sudo apt-get remove -y xserver-xorg-dev-hwe-16.04 libxfont-dev
sudo apt-get install -y libxfont1-dev
sudo apt-get install -y xserver-xorg-dev

... you still get an error on xserver-xorg-dev which tries to re-install libxfont-dev, but at least it completes.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
xserver-xorg-dev : Depends: libxfont-dev but it is not going to be installed

Unfortunately, that still leaves me with ABI conflicts in xrdp-sesman. I'm stumped.

@metalefty The package list looks right, does this match yours?

I'll check it & answer on Monday.

Just for record, the issue is now filed Ubuntu launchpad and in progress.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libxfont/+bug/1707691

Same issue here, Ubuntu 16.04, just installed the latest LTS updates and got the black screen.

I built xrdp and xorgxrdp from the latest git pull (d9b929c1 for xrdp and bdda5277 for xorgxrdp)

With help of the launchpad ticket I was able to untangle the packaging mess arounf libxfont (by pulling from the xenial-proposed repository) and to build xorgxrdp successfully.

I have tried the Xwrapper thing, doesn't change anything.

Here are the versions of all the stuff:

ii libxfont1:amd64 1:1.5.1-1ubuntu0.16.04.2 amd64 X11 font rasterisation library
ii libxfont1-dev 1:1.5.1-1ubuntu0.16.04.2 amd64 X11 font rasterisation library (development headers)
ii libxfont2:amd64 1:2.0.1-3~ubuntu16.04.1 amd64 X11 font rasterisation library

(Note where the libxfont1-dev package comes from, as well as the corresponding apt-pinning for xenial-proposed:)

I see many cases of ABI mismatch:

xorgxrdp: module ABI major version (20) doesn't match the server's version (23)
xrdpmouse: module ABI major version (22) doesn't match the server's version (24)
xrdpkeyb: module ABI major version (22) doesn't match the server's version (24)

How to overcome that?

Ok I have found a workaround that _"works for me ©"_ for now: I downgrade xserver-xorg-core to the previous version (1.18). (note that I am compiling the latest git version of xrdp and xorgxrdp with the fix concerning the libxfont mentioned in my previous comment: https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xrdp/issues/786#issuecomment-322379342 )

I spent too much time to figure out how to do it on Ubuntu 16.04 so I'll share with you:

_DISCLAIMER: It worked for me, it may break everything for you, I take no responsibility, use at your own risk. (or maybe it works for you too, or maybe not... well life is like a box of chocolate...)_

Step 1: add the old-releases Ubuntu repository (because old versions of the packages are not available in the default repositories... only the last one)

efwfrwegagvre

Step 2: for some reason, the -hwe packages for xorg didn't work even when downgrading from 1.19 to 1.18, so I finally got rid of the HWE version to install the non HWE versions:

(I did it with help of aptitude to do it all at once)

  • remove xserver-xorg-core-hwe-16.04:amd64 (2:1.19.3-1ubuntu1~16.04.2)
  • remove xserver-xorg-input-all-hwe-16.04:amd64 (1:7.7+16ubuntu3~16.04.1)
  • remove xserver-xorg-video-all-hwe-16.04:amd64 (1:7.7+16ubuntu3~16.04.1)
  • install xserver-xorg-core:amd64 (2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.3)
  • install xserver-xorg-input-all:amd64 (1:7.7+13ubuntu3)
  • install xserver-xorg-video-all:amd64 (1:7.7+13ubuntu3)

(xserver-common should normally stay at version 2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.3)

_Good luck if you are trying this._

In the end my packages' versions look like that:

for xserver-xorg-* :

hi xserver-xorg-core 2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.3
hi xserver-xorg-dev 2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.3
hi xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.7+13ubuntu3
hi xserver-xorg-video-all 1:7.7+13ubuntu3

(you can see that I have set these version on Hold in apt so that they don't get upgraded automatically next time)

just for completeness, for compiling xorgxrdp:

ii libxfont-dev 1:2.0.1-3~ubuntu16.04.1
ii libxfont1:amd64 1:1.5.1-1ubuntu0.16.04.2
ii libxfont1-dev 1:1.5.1-1ubuntu0.16.04.2
ii libxfont2:amd64 1:2.0.1-3~ubuntu16.04.1

(note that the version 1:1.5.1-1ubuntu0.16.04.2 for libxfont1 and libxfont1-dev is only available in the xenial-proposed repository for now)

After rebooting it worked again for me (using mate-session).

_(well to be honest, that's an oversimplification since I didn't find the correct solution on the first try, or the second, ... welll I guess I have rebooted like 10 times with different combinations of packages. So this summary was not really tested directly as is. I hope I didn't forgot something essential, but there are chances I did miss something. Hopefully this will still be of help for someone else.)_

EDIT: and no this isn't a solution for this GitHub issue, only a _workaround_ to be able to work again with remote desktop sessions until the root cause is fixed. My best guess for now is the ABI incompatibility problem, but in reality I have absolutely no clue how this whole xrdp/xorg magic works. Thanks dear developer to provide such a useful software in the first place

Well, I'm x-confused as ever. Arrgh.

I updated the packages in xubuntu 16.04 and got exactly such a problem, is there a solution except downgrade xserver-xorg-core?

Now xorgxrdp should be built properly as ubuntu fix has been committed.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libxfont/+bug/1707691

Yes it builds, but still doesn't solve the abi problem that requires a downgrade of xorg.

The libxfont issue was only a bump in the road while troubleshooting this issue, but not related to the black screen problem.

It worked for me. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, no ABI problem.
~
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.3
libxfont1-dev 1:1.5.1-1ubuntu0.16.04.2
~

Xorg :10 -config xrdp/xorg.conf shows no ABI error.

Yes with the xorg version you mentioned this works, but for Desktop installs with standard updates of Ubuntu, the version of xorg I had after the most recent Ubuntu LTS upgrade was xserver-xorg-core-hwe-16.04:amd64 (2:1.19.3-1ubuntu1~16.04.2), which doesn't work.

As already mentioned in previous comments*, _the issue started when performing a standard upgrade of Ubuntu to 16.04.2 which included the aforementioned upgrade of xserver-xorg-core_.

The workaround I gave above was indeed to force revert to xserver-xorg-core 2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.3, which isn't anymore in the standard repositories in case you already upgraded to 16.04.2. Thus the need to add the old-releases repository which shouldn't be done in general.

*:

Same issue here, Ubuntu 16.04, just installed the latest LTS updates and got the black screen.

OK, I understand you and I confirmed the ABI error. I'll investigate it. Let's create a new issue on xorgxrdp repo and discuss about the ABI error on Ubuntu 16.04 in a separate issue.

That is xorgxrdp issue rather than xrdp.

$ dpkg -la |grep xserver-xorg
ii xserver-xorg-core-hwe-16.04 2:1.19.3-1ubuntu1~16.04.2 amd64 Xorg X server - core server
ii xserver-xorg-dev-hwe-16.04 2:1.19.3-1ubuntu1~16.04.2 amd64 Xorg X server - development files

Now I get no ABI errors with xserver 1.19 (xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04). Working fine for me.

@metalefty
Many thanks! You are a true friend! Worked!

I will not be able to test myself before the next maintenance window for the server where I had this problem (i.e. not soon), but indeed the solution makes sense 🤦‍ and I _guess_ is should work.

@johnarnold how's it going? it should work for you now.

If you disconnect from the terminal server and you try to connect again, the connection does not occur.

After some time this command helps:
sudo pkill -9 -u r2d2

Is it possible to fix this?

This problem user in the system weighs 2 processes reconnectwm.sh, they can not be killed.

Hello, just sharing my log file

It starts when I start the two services, and it ends right after I click ok on the error dialog that eventually pops up on the connecting client (takes about 5 minutes to pop up)

xrdp.log.txt

Nothing about the nature of the problem has changed, just hoping my log file of the newest devel branch will help shed some light on my issue.

Thanks
