I can reproduce this.
On Chrome, the site never stops loading, so I could not fully test it.

Tested with:
Browser / Version: Firefox Nightly 66.0a1 (2019-01-28)

ah no… If I make the window less high, we get the red screen sooner. So maybe a percentage of height scrolling?

Before scrolling the box is 1330x66px in my case.
Then after scrolling and becoming red the box is 1330x454px covering indeed the full height of the viewport.

Note that we only unprefixed max-content ~recently, in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1322780 which is in Firefox 66 (on beta as of this week).

So this superficially looks like a case where an element's height is overconstrained -- it's fixed-position, and it has explicit values for top, bottom, and height.

Normally, if you only set top and bottom to something non-auto, then the height is whatever portion of the viewport is left over, basically. But if there's also a specified non-auto height, then it's overconstrained, and typically you're supposed to ignore bottom and honor top + height. This is specced here.

HOWEVER: per https://drafts.csswg.org/css-sizing/#valdef-width-max-content , max-content is supposed to behave as auto in this case (since auto is the initial value for height). So we're doing the right thing and treating height:max-content as if it were height:auto as directed by that spec, and so we're not actually overconstrained. So, we're honoring top and bottom, which makes this red element take up nearly the full height of the page.

Also, for what it's worth: if I edit the site's .sticky class that karl quoted above to use height:auto !important rather than height: max-content !important, then Chrome matches Firefox's rendering with and makes the red element full-screen. So, that confirms that Chrome will agree with our rendering once they fix their bug.

In our outreach to the site, I think we should suggest that they add...

    bottom: auto !important;

...to their .sticky CSS rule. That overrides the bottom: -30px styling that this element is given in another rule, and it prevents the element from stretching to cover the whole viewport when the sticky class is applied.

With this change, Firefox will match the behavior that Chrome (with their bug) is already giving them.
