Walletwasabi: Suggestion for the fee slider

Created on 5 Nov 2018  路  8Comments  路  Source: zkSNACKs/WalletWasabi

I'd like to make a recommendation for the fee slider and estimated time of confirmation when sending a txn.

About an hour ago, I sent a txn to another wallet. My first one with WW btw. I had the option to choose on a slider how fast I wanted my txn to confirm. First several options on the slider were 24 hrs and under, but the rest of them were 1-7 days. I chose a 1 day confirmation estimation (block explorer showed fee was 2 sat/b) and started to receive confirmations in the receiving wallet in less than a minute.

I'd say have a limit, and then allow the option for custom fee.

I know 2s/b is low and this is the lowest fee I have been able to obtain using the current fee slider. I to would greatly appreciate the ability to manually set a fee because many of my transactions are not time sensitive and would like to pay the lowest possible fee of 1s/b. These Satoshi鈥檚 add up over time, :).

I would also like to comment on the fee slider and estimation. As of present, they are highly unhelpful because (1) we don't know how much an outgoing transaction will cost us until we actually push it to the mempool and (2) it is not real-world possible to time TX inclusion with the suggested precision (1 hour resolution within first 24 hours, 1 day resolution within first week).

Such interface will just create grief for inexperienced users who will get the impression they would be able to schedule outgoing payment for 3pm next Tuesday by pushing the slider to a given position.

What I would like to see in future releases regarding fee handling:

  • Fee rate expressed in sat/b
  • Transaction size
  • Fee value (transaction size 脳 fee rate)
  • The ability to enter custom fee value by hand

A version of the above is used by both Ledger and Trezor wallet software: a drop down menu with several possible fees:

I know that fee estimation is a tricky thing to do. The developers can spend lots of time on it and it still may not feel right. So maybe for the time being just show us the intended fee value (in sat/b and satoshi) that corresponds to the slider so that we can more easily test outgoing payments, and leave other refinements for when the basics have been polished.

P.S. I sincerely hope I don't come across as entitled/demanding and disrespectful towards all the great work that has been done so far. I honestly think the above suggestions will improve the UX and make more people happier.

Just an update, fee estimation has been finally reworked where most of the issues raised here were addressed, however we did not implement directly some of the recommendations in this issue, where we believe the complexity increase is too great. Thus their place will be in the upcoming Advanced Send tab: https://github.com/zkSNACKs/WalletWasabi/issues/932

In regards to manually selecting the fee precisely - Concept ACK.
There might be some issues with transaction fingerprinting, though I think this is up to the advanced user who is opting into the manual selection.
