Vgstation13: There are some good points to be made for un-mapping sidewindow-grille-sidewindow combos and replacing them with fullwindows+grille

It's not an intuitive idea, but let me elaborate.

Pros of un-mapping side windows:

  • Side windows are relatively annoying and time-consuming to rebuild, for no good reason. Rebuilding a single full-tile would be much easier if we add an option to make a full-tile when slapping a grille with glass.
  • By simplifying down to full-tiles we could also add a "grille+window" function to the RCD
  • Would mostly fix probably the worst ZAS bug of them all, #19258
  • Side-windows also have tons of other weird bugs, like pressure and fires only breaking them from one side, adjacency issues like bees stinging through them and biomass spreading inside them, etc. These bugs would still exist, but show much less often.
  • Side windows also have collision issues like mobs stopping to break them needlessly and stopping thrown items midair
  • Assuming #21595 is merged, this would add consistency to the values. Same for any other PR that does something with windows.
  • You can silicate spray both sides of a window at once!

Cons:

  • Players really like the rotate-window trick to break into areas. However if there's only one full-tile in the way they'd surely come up with a similar trick like unscrew-and-pull-away, and it would probably take even less time.
  • Players also like to break one window and the grille to "expand" their offices sometimes. Granted you could still build your own side window if you wanted the end result, but it wouldn't really be the same thing.
  • Full-tile window HP would have to be doubled to compensate

It takes like 5 seconds to repair side windows, also aesthetically superior.

What about the aesthetics ?

It takes like 5 seconds to repair side windows, also aesthetically superior.

If both sides of the window break, especially if it's the "end cap" of a window, then it's a pain to remake them all to be honest and that's why you see so many half-finished window repairs

As for the aesthetics: We can always make fullwindow sprites more aesthetic. Failing that, you'll get used to them and a year from now people will think the side windows looked ugly I guess

I made the fulltile sprites they're using on TG so feel free to use those.

If you were gonna do this I would need to make some for plasma windows and to fix that awful standard window sprite (seen in the second screenshot)

I think the HP of Rtilewindows should be a bit more than doubled should this take effect but yeah I support it

god yes, I spend more time fixing the fucking windows than anything else in the game

half-tile windows also make fixing window breaches a lot easier (just rotate one of the surviving windows instead of having to set up a new one) (though @MadmanMartian's shitty changes make it harder nowadays)

Doesn't seem much faster considering you have to screwdriver+crowbar+screwdriver+rotate the surviving window vs just tap grille with glass once

As someone who rarely wears eye protection, I'd rather just be able to rotate one of the ~3 spare windows than have to blow my eyes out to make a new pane from broken shards.

to elaborate:

(1) grille+full tile windows are fine to repair and interact with

(2) grille+thin windows are fine to repair and interact with

(3) grille+full tile windows+thin windows are hellish to repair and interact with (because the final full tile window on top has extremely specific interaction requirements and will forbid the user from altclicking it if they're in a "bad" direction in relation to the full tile window)

as long as it's not (3) i'm happy. (2) works with /vg/ window rotating culture but i imagine people dont like how all the "naked" grilles look (oh and all of the bugs mentioned in the OP)

Border objects were a mistake
BYOND's movement system was really not built to support them, and it shows
Try flying a spacepod at windows facing away from you sometime
There's no reasonable way to fix that
