I am on Arch. At the very least the last two versions of Telegram Desktop (current being 1.5.2) haven't got any sound in audio files.
I've noticed though that, at 2x, the sound returns.

Do calls work?

Do calls work?

Yeah! I've checked it out just now. The voice call service works properly, though.

tried a video and 2 audio files on ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS and it has audio for me.

The same way as @delkano, I could hear the sounds through 2x way.

That happen too in Windows 10, Telegram v.1.6.1
I can't hear anything about voice notes when I clicked on play button.

Happening on Linux, Telegram 1.6.3. Any plans on fixing this soon?

happening on windows 10, client version: 1.6.3

Found that stdout gives some hints:

[ogg @ 0x7ffb40000bc0] 737 bytes of comment header remain
Invalid return value 0 for stream protocol
Invalid return value 0 for stream protocol
[ogg @ 0x7ffb40000bc0] Packet processing failed: Invalid data found when processing input

This looks familiar to me. The colorscheme looks like ffmpeg output.

The same error here.

OS: Arch Linux

Same behavior and audio is back on 2x.
It was working until I've changed my phone to a wireless one.
Working on Hyperx Cloud 2, not working on SteelSeries Arctis 7 (only 2x works).

Version 1.70 on Win10

I try to repair sound in Telegram with Pavucontrol.
Pavucontrol shows that HDMI is set as output device for Telegram.
A problem is that it is not possible to change it from pavucontrol (but it is possible for firefox).
Also i noticed that button to change output for Telegram looks differently then for firefox (see screenshot).

try to go calls -> settings and change from there.

Any news about this? Still getting same error on 1.7.3

Invalid return value 0 for stream protocol

And no sound from audio messages on arch linux

Windows 10, Telegram v1.7.10. Same issue as everyone else, no audio from audio messages, tried manually configuring the output device in call settings

Windows 10, Telegram v1.7.10. Same issue as everyone else, no audio from audio messages, tried manually configuring the output device in call settings

it's not working

Happens also on Windows 10 Pro 64bit with client ver. 1.8.9
Discord showed somewhat the same problem - there was no audio playback, but you could fix that by changing the output device from "Standard" to the device you wanted.

So it seems to me, that the "Default device" (though specified correctly in Windows Sound Settings) is can't be reached.

ref windows there was a windows bug related to audio, idk if it can be your case.

Can you hand that bug no. over to me? Might be resolved already on the Fast Ring Insider Build I'm running (18990)

The same here. No sound while playing video or audio.

This solution helps me:

Aokromes commented on Jun 3
try to go calls -> settings and change from there.

Didn't help me, even after manually specifying the correct device - no sound.

There seems to be two different issues with similar symptoms. People who get their sound when they change their output device had just a bad setup (Telegram is not correctly detecting the correct output for them).

But others have a very different issue: sound plays when set at x2 speed, but not in normal speed. All settings are correct. This is a Telegram playback issue.

I'm afraid the mix of these two different issues is going to dilute the problem for people who met the second bug and make it harder for devs to solve it (if they even try).

That's unfortunately not everything: My case is covered by none of the above statements, so I have NO audio (it doesn't do anything if I change the playback speed or the output device)

Have you tried with some other form of media player?

Good news - at least I can confirm audio working after an update to Telegram version 1.8.15.
Before the update, I needed to download every audio file and play it from my desktop (e.g. with Groove Music Audio Player)

try to go calls -> settings and change from there.

As he said, just go to "calls -> settings icon -> Output device" (change it from default to your output device)

I've also tried this way and hopelessly there is no sound. About one year passed from the time that I created this issue and I still use the 2x speed to listen to the voice messages, or I must download the other media and play them on other player applications.

Same issue for me. I can't hear sound from any media, until I turn it to 2X speed:(

I have the same issue on windows 10. No sound unless it's playing 2x

same result.. but on Ubuntu 18.x. This just started to happen last few days

Same issue Telegram Desktop 1.8.15 on Windows 10.
Voice messages do only work in 2x when I try to use my headset. With my speakers I can use both regular and 2x speed.

Hi I just found out what the problem was for me.
My default audio device was a single channel mono device. In my case it is the Steelseries Arctis Pro Headset which shows up as two playback devices for leveling voice and game sound. When trying to play to the device for voice chat, there is no sound, when playing to the game device everything works fine.

I still assume a bug in the telegram application as other apps can play to the voice chat device without any problems.

Log in to telegram web then listen from there.

I got the same problem since a while and will try to help with some more details on the issue.

OS: Manjaro Linux 18.1.5
Kernel: 5.4.6-2-MANJARO
Telegram Desktop: 1.9.3

Normally the audio in Telegram Desktop works fine and there are no issues with it. But after some time it stops working and I can't get the cause. Restarting Telegram doesn't help and restarting pulseaudio doesn't help either.

I already tried the following without any effect:

  • Restart Telegram
  • "Calls -> "Settings icon" -> "Output device" (change it from default to your output device)
  • Restarting pulseaudio (sudo killall pulseaudio)

After that I checked if voice messages get played after hitting the [2x] Button - and yes, they do. But as some others already stated I still can't switch the audio device in pavucontrol for telegram-desktop.

As I don't know which logs could help me any futher I just tryed typing the command debugmode and viewlogs in Telegram Desktop Settings Menu. But the only audio related errors I could find were the following ones:

[2020.01.09 16:08:40] Streaming Error: Error in avcodec_find_decoder (code: 8, text: Error number 8 occurred).
[2020.01.09 16:08:40] Audio Info: recreating audio device and reattaching the tracks

[2020.01.09 16:09:24] Audio Info: recreating audio device and reattaching the tracks
[2020.01.09 16:09:32] Audio Info: Closing audio playback device.

These messages appeared after I started and stopped audio playback in Telegram Desktop. It successfully creates the audio socket for telegram-desktop as I can see in pavucontrol but the volume meter doesn't show anything and so theres no real sound output. Switching the output device still doesn't work as stated above.

Pls tell me what logs you need to investigate any further and I will try my best.

It works after upgrading to version 1.9.7 :+1:

Never have this problem. Encounter it with 1.9.8 now.

There is any linux user still with problem? you guys use official desktop.telegram.org package? if no, try that one and run telegram from command line and paste result here. (binary must be called Telegram, not telegram-desktop)
for macos users, try checking log.txt to see if you see something strange.

Okay, partially resolved. I have been using echo cancellation as an output device based on this tutorial. Switching back to default helped. But with video still doesn't work.

any of you linux users are using this?
https://gist.githubusercontent.com/grigio/cb93c3e8710a6f045a3dd9456ec01799/raw/94f07c7d75bcf5dd9b08a9c3034844223ec6fbe1/fix-microphone-background-noise.sh
if yes try to revert the changes
sudo cp /etc/pulse/default.pa.bak /etc/pulse/default.pa
restart linux and try again.

Just tested 1.9.9. Everything work if disable echo cancellation. :+1:

I also had echo cancellation by default. And disabling it for Telegram does indeed bring the sound back.

if you can supply a guide to disable it only for telegram desktop for sure all the affected persons will thx you :)

My system is not very common, so I can't give precise instructions. However, the basic idea is:

  1. Open Pulseaudio mixer
  2. Launch any audio on Telegram
  3. At that moment, on the mixer's "Playback" tab, you'll see a "telegram-desktop-bin" line appear.
  4. On that line, change the output from the default, echo-cancelled one, to one without the cancellation.

For me this doesn't help. I don't have any noise cancellation tweaks applied and the sound is still gone with 1.9.8 on Linux.

In pulseaudio changing of output device for telegram-desktop not possible and no volume meter. But in Telegram the progress counter at the top of the GUI works fine.

you are using telegram-desktop from your manjaro distribution no? try with Telegram 1.9.9 downloaded from github or desktop.telegram.org

You were absolutely right. I used telegram-desktop-bin from AUR. After downloading the 1.9.9 Linux 64bit Telegram binary from GitHub everything works as expected.

Thanks for your help :+1:

Thanks for your help

It's working for me on the last official Arch package, so if I were you I would try to install community/telegram-desktop, since Manjaro shares most packages with Arch. No need for AUR nor manual installs.

Unfortunately my luck was gone after some time :/ It's not working again.

The only thing I did was restarting my X-Server yesterday because it crashed. I'm still using the 1.9.9 binary. Anything else I can try to find the real cause of the problem?

Ok pls don't rely on my last message. At the moment its working again - I presume it's because I restarted my PC. I will keep you on track if anything changes. So at the moment the problem seems to be gone with version 1.9.9

It happens in telegram-desktop 1.9.9-4-ga25792187 snap too, but only if you plays the audio at 2X.

you guys are using echo cancelation?

I don't think so since I don't have the module-echo-cancel loaded. But my problem seems to be different since it only happens when I set the 2x speed with this version https://snapcraft.io/telegram-desktop
[ogg @ 0x7f5738000900] 727 bytes of comment header remain
And the other error reference ffmpeg while mine "40963, Invalid Value" seems to be from OpenAL.
Edit: Fixed in telegram-desktop (1.9.21), thank you

Could anyone check if this artifact works with echo cancellation?
https://github.com/ilya-fedin/tdesktop/actions/runs/77852541

Hello there. It is worth to be noting that I'm using snap version of the app. No sound problem is permanent for me.

Why is this issue closed? I have a similar issue on Windows 10 and nothing in the comments worked, I installed the portable version and now it works.
My issue is that only the speakers work and not the headphones. - I tried changing the output source in the call settings but could not find anything in the regular settings. It does work from the web version and the portable version....

@chagai95 call settings doesn't change the device for anything else rather than call, voice messages can use only the default device.

@ilya-fedin exactly, I mentioned it because someone wrote in a comment that that helped them. My default decide is set to the headset and like I said it works fine with the portable desktop version and on web but not on the official regular version. For some reason it's stuck on the speakers I guess and when my default is not the speakers then it doesn't work at all.

@chagai95 try to clean app data

I cleaned data killed the process uninstalled telegram updated windows restarted windows all this a few times in different orders and I also deleted everything related to telegram I could find on windows.

Unfortunately I do not speak C++
What does that mean? I can play the audio it just does not play to the earphones, I'm not sure if an exception get's thrown in such a case, can someone re-open this issue or should I create another issue for my specific problem?

What does that mean?

That means that tdesktop asks default device from OpenAL and all further actions to choose the device are performed by OpenAL

ok thanks, I guess I need to post the issue there as well then...

So I need to build telegram myself I assume or is there a way to just get the logs without building again?

So I need to build telegram myself I assume or is there a way to just get the logs without building again?

You just need to open command line, set ALSOFT_LOGLEVEL and ALSOFT_LOGFILE variables there, start Telegram in the command line and try to play something

how do I set those variables?

set ALSOFT_LOGLEVEL=3
set ALSOFT_LOGFILE=C:\Users\%USER%\telegram_openal.log

Not sure if syntax is right, I'm a linux user

couldn't figure it out can not find the log file after doing these commands but it seems like they work is there a way to check if they worked?

couldn't figure it out can not find the log file after doing these commands

I'm hope you started Telegram in that command line after these commands?

is there a way to check if they worked?

Only by finding the logfile

sorry, I did not, now it is working fine, took me some time to figure out how to start the file...Thanks!

Here are the logs:

and here is a screen cap of me doing everything, also showing I?m choosing different device inputes.

It is the right device, isn't it?

and here is a screen cap of me doing everything, also showing I?m choosing different device inputes.

I don't see anything, it is 360p

Yes it is the right device, sorry I suspect google photos compressed it, I have a huge screen so the compression did not work that well... this is a bit better, at least you can see something, thanks so much! I read the logs and did not really understand much... DELL U4320Q (NVIDIA High Definition Audio) are the speakers that work from the screen and Headphones (2- Realtek Audio) are from the desktop itslef and they both work just the Logitech USB Headset H540 do not work

Stop. What's the problem? I understood that incorrect device is chosen by your first post.

I am assuming Telegram Desktop does not manage to connect to these headphones, which is weird because Telegram Desktop Portable and on Web both do manage.

the portable and the regular versions are the same binary (you can verify with sha256 checksum), installer just adds some registry keys, tdesktop reads them and installs some files that portable version shouldn't (like shortcuts, etc)

of course if you're talking about portable versions from github releases of this repo

I downloaded the portable and the regular from telegram.org what you are saying makes this issue even more weird. I can hear the message when with the portable but not with the regular, I'll make another screen cap soon

what you are saying makes this issue even more weird

That's why this is magic

😅 I just use the portable version if they are the same

Telegram 1.7.3
Ubuntu 18.04.2

I try to repair sound in Telegram with Pavucontrol.
Pavucontrol shows that HDMI is set as output device for Telegram.
A problem is that it is not possible to change it from pavucontrol (but it is possible for firefox).
Also i noticed that button to change output for Telegram looks differently then for firefox (see screenshot).

Telegram was muted in Pavucontrol interface, while it was invisible with standard KDE audio widged. Thx.
