Tdesktop: Telegram won't update itself

Created on 23 May 2018  路  18Comments  路  Source: telegramdesktop/tdesktop

Steps to reproduce

  1. The app downloads the update
  2. Click on Update Telegram button

Expected behaviour

The app should update itself.

Actual behaviour

The app closes, the process remains in background, the tray icon remain orphan (it can be clicked but is does nothing) and telegram is not updated.
I suppose it's a problem of the updater program.

Configuration

Ubuntu 17.10

Version of Telegram Desktop:
1.2.15
Used theme:

I can't produce any log of this (even with the debug mode on)
I should mention that:

  • I already tried to uninstall / purge telegram from my system
  • I reinstalled it different times
  • I had a problem with my version of Ubuntu: I modev to 18.04 and than rolled back to 17.10 (maybe it broke something...?)

It might be that fontconfig bug #4543, I remember this behavior when I used the static binaries.

I see that Ubuntu has packages of Telegram, do you use these or the binaries provided by the Telegram team? If you use the binaries provided by the Telegram team, maybe you can solve your problem by using those in the Ubuntu repository, and we will know the identity of this issue.

@Socialdarwinist Binaries from https://desktop.telegram.org should update themselves fine if you use them from a non-write-protected folder.

I just added the PPA and installed Telegram via apt-get (Yes, I'm lazy).

@zangobot I doubt PPA you've added is the official one, but rather maintained by different people. If you trust them (not Telegram, but PPA maintainers) - it's fine. However that's a bit risky IMO

You're right (and I feel quite dumb)
I'll let you know

I installed from the official repository.
I don't know if I should close the ticket or wait for the new update to be released, check if everything's ok and then close.

Thank you anyway :+1:

from the official repository

You mean Ubuntu repos? That鈥檚 not official either.
Could you please check if the binary initially was in a writeable path?

I meant this https://desktop.telegram.org/
Sorry, I wrote repository instead of whatever

Does it update itself properly?

Now I'm using 1.2.17 which should be the latest.
Of course I could download the source, roll back to a previous version and the try the update process, but I'm very busy at work :-D

Sure :)
If it doesn't, leave a comment

Same problem. Ubuntu 18.04

It works for BTW, just download it from official website.

This issue still exists.

I have the same issue with ubuntu 18.04. Updating the app only restarts the app. I made the folder Writable as well which didn't work out.

Downloading and installing .tar file from the official page fixed the issue.

I have the same issue with ubuntu 18.04. Updating the app only restarts the app. I made the folder Writable as well which didn't work out.

Had the same issue on Ubuntu 20.04. Telegram was installed in /opt/telegram, folder was owned by root:root
Today I executed chown -R my_user:my_user /opt/telegram and after that telegram finally succeeded self-update. Folder rights are 755.
