git icon is just a square box, I am using hyper terminal and have Fira Code font enabled on my MBP

i fixed it, you should use Powerline Font and use Meslo LG M DZ for Powerline on your terminal settings ✌🏽

Just solved this issue following what @oteka21 suggest. You can find the fonts here and just download and install it. Don't forget to configure with whatever your terminal is.

You need to have a powerline patched font in order to properly display git branch symbol.

• Install any powerline compatible font like Fira Code or others.
• Configure your terminal emulator to use that font.
