Signal-Desktop doesn't get all messages

Signal-Desktop is not receiving some messages in a group chat. In a normal group chat there are suddenly some messages not being received. One person is sending messages in rapid succession and some of those messages only appear on my phone, but not on my desktop client.

Steps to reproduce

There is afaik no reliable way to reproduce this.

Platform info

Signal version:

Signal on Android 4.19.3 (oreo)
Signal-Desktop 1.9

Operating System:
Arch Linux

I believe I've figured out one way to repro this.
shut down desktop app. send messages to single person OR group. Next day, start desktop app up. Note some missing messages. I've had this happen several times now and it seems consistent. @gasi-signal @scottnonnenberg-signal

Also had this happen a few times. A couple of messages in row didn't get to the my desktop client, but can be seen fine on phone. If I recall correctly this has also happened to messages that I've sent my self (to others), that is my own desktop client doesn't get them.

@andreas-ateles We鈥檙e sorry you ran into this. Could you please check your Signal Android app for the messages you received but never showed up on Signal Desktop? To better investigate the issue, I need the timestamp of when the message was sent and received. To do that long tap on a message, tap the (i) icon on top, and then please share the exact timestamp listed under Sent and Received, e.g. _Apr 10, 2018, 4:29:23 AM GMT+08:00_. Thanks!

@andreas-ateles And we'll need logs from both devices right after it happens too. The more information we have, the more likely it will be that we can track this down and fix it!

Are you 100% sure the missing messages are indeed missing, and were not just added to the conversation at the wrong position?

@Trolldemorted

not just added to the conversation at the wrong position?

This occurs frequently on some desktop devices for me/friends. Is there anyway to verify or check that this is occurring.

We could also create a discussion on the forums to try and better understand this situation.

@skulumani We really, really need your logs whenever this happens. It would help if you're running both the production version of Signal Desktop and the beta version too (or just two desktop instances on two machines), we'd want both logs, especially if one got it and the other didn't.

Certainly we would appreciate all of you getting together to try to piece together when it happens. But we really need you to get into a habit of submitting logs when you see bugs in the app!

@skulumani I know of no automatic way, I just scrolled up to the begin of the conversation, copypasted everything into a text editor, and searched for the mesages.

Yes I'm sure. I even waited a few minutes to make sure

The logs I first submitted send on 2018-05-08 21:17:32 mesz received on 2018-05-08 21:17:17 mesz (yes that is correct there is a clockskew)

Last time this happened to me was a few weeks ago, so I won't be able to track down the messages and the logs now. Will try to do it next time I see this happen.

The reason for my comment here was mostly to let you know that this has happened to more more than one person. (Just happened to see the issue while browsing the repo.)

Waited several minutes for the message to show up. I didn't not scroll up to check if they got placed somewhere out of view. The previous and next messages sent/recieved were in the correct order, so would be strange for just a couple to be out of order.

I've only noticed this happen a couple of times (during last 6 months or so), so it does not happen frequently here. I am using signal desktop on two different windows computers (if that is relevant).

I just encountered this, although it is a message I sent on mobile that is not showing up in the desktop conversation. The message in question is the one sent at 23 May 2018 13:58:39 CDT.

The message is not incorrectly inserted into the conversation as far as I can see.

I have encountered a missing message on a Signal-Windows slave, could this be a server issue? All other sibling devices received it fine.

Happens even with active sognal-desktop, but I Gould reproduce a similar event with my phone missing a message (it had a bad connection at the time). I couldn't get the logs at that time thought

Same for me here. The time stamp of the message sent from my android device is: 2018-06-12 23:32:34

I am getting this bug for multiple desktop clients (different devices, all on ArchLinux, Signal v1.12.0).

Happens here as well. Using the latest iOS and Mac version respectively.

Same issue here on Windows 10 (signal v.1.12.1). In my case it happened just how @jeremymasters described in his comment https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Desktop/issues/2356#issuecomment-396604573

Same issue here
sent message on android 4.22.4 - read and received new message
opened signal desktop(ubuntu linux) messages don't appear - not sure on the version as about signal doesn't show a version, but there are no updates available so would assume the latest version

For me it's mainly the Windows client that's having problems keeping up.

Desktop (Windows 10): Signal 1.18.1
Desktop (Ubuntu 18.04): Signal 1.18.1
Mobile (Android 9/Pie): Signal 4.30.8

Last message recieved: Dec 6, 2018, 08:35:13 GMT+01:00 (sent: Dec 6, 2018, 08:35:12 GMT+01:00)

On WIndows, the last message is sent by me (from mobile) on Nov. 23 and received (by the Windows client) on Dec 6, 2018, 11:02.
On Linux, the last message is the same as the last message on mobile, sent to me Dec 6, 2018, 08:35 and received by the Linux client on Dec 6, 2018, 11:11, so everything's fine there.

For some reason my desktop and my phone stopped syncing. I tried restting , unkinking, and re-linking but it didnt work.

@skimbro1 Can you talk a little bit more about what exactly you see in the app? Does it say 'disconnected' in the top left? Can you send messages with it? What about going to Settings and attempting a manual contact sync?
