Signal-desktop: [feature request] Sending/receiving SMS through Signal Desktop

It might be hard from a technical perspective but having SMS also in the Signal Desktop would be awesome.

I thought this APP would use the Signal APP on the phone to send or recieve SMS.
Why get a SMS gateway, when you can use your phone?

I don't think so.
Signal can send and recieve SMS.
It replaces the SMS app on my phone.
So the signal desktop app can send the signal phone app a command to write a SMS.
Also the phone app can redirect every SMS to the desktop app.

So the phone app is needed for sending and recieving SMS.

@NinebitX yes, it's a dupe of #496, but issue is closed and it's not possible to add comment ... In my opinion, it's an important feature :-)

For those users that have the app installed it should be possible to send SMS from the desktop version via the smartphone app. I know this is not a simple feature but for me it would move Signal from nice-to-have to absolutely essential. I think this is true of many users. Considering how few of my friends have Signal the desktop version is not useful to me right now. SMS on Desktop would also be a huge selling point for Signal IMO.

I would happily dedicate resources to this, both time and money, to get this done.

I might be willing to help out with this effort if a PR is welcome - this would make it a lot easier to switch over to Signal, since I currently use Pulse (https://messenger.klinkerapps.com/) to SMS message from a desktop with sync to my phone

@jcrben @danieka Thanks for the offers to help with this, but we can't commit to supporting this feature even if you are able to initially implement it.

We would still really appreciate your help, of course, and this is where we could use it - our bug backlog: https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Desktop/projects/1 We need to get through the majority of that before we start thinking about this issue.
