In particularly high traffic conversations, the bouncing can be so distracting as to prevent me from doing anything else. It'd be great if there was a way to disable the bouncing; and perhaps replace it with an "unread count" badge or some other indicator.
Maybe it could be nice if the dock icon shows a badge counter for unread messages. This could be also used to show current state (connected, disconnected).
setBadgeText and getBadgeText may do that.
UPDATE: these seem to work only with extensions. Nothing similar is available for apps yet.
Really needed. When having a presentation or something alike there should be a way to disable the bounce. +1
Pleeeeease implement this, the bouncing icon drives me absolutely nuts. I don't even care if there's no option for a badge (my dock is hidden, I hardly ever look at it) I just want to be able to turn off the bounce.
agreed, this bouncing icon drives me totally nuts too. I prefer ephemeral notifications, the way slack does it. Just pop up what the message was on libnotify for 2 or 3 seconds.. then it disappears.
So in the meantime, if you don't care about bouncing dock icons at all (like me) you can do:
defaults write com.apple.dock no-bouncing -bool TRUE
killall Dock
to disable the bouncing system-wide
I get that some people like this, but for some of us it triggers something ranging from a mild irritation to a profound rage.
Please, I implore you, make it configurable!
I think it would be ideal and idiomatic if instead the behavior were to be identical to that of Apple's Messages.
I've encouraged my girlfriend to use Signal instead of Messages and now I'm regretting it because the icon won't stop bouncing until I interrupt my workflow and click exactly the right place, which can happen several times per minute. I'm noticing a growing feeling of resentment toward Signal and toward my girlfriend. 🤔
Exactly! I've experienced the same thing as @NodeGuy, which has caused me to stop using signal desktop altogether. Unfortunately I haven't been able to figure out how to set up the development environment without access to google voice # s to have a stab at fixing this myself so... Pleasepleaseplease somebody fix this :(

Great find @itshields and the command is almost perfect. There needs to be a && before killall for it to work. Like this:
defaults write com.apple.dock no-bouncing -bool TRUE && killall Dock
I looked into this and it may be that this is a "feature" with chrome apps :(
However, good news! The electron branch seems to have a better solution to draw-attention
https://github.com/WhisperSystems/Signal-Desktop/blob/electron/main.js#L267
This dock bounce problem is super annoying. Please fix this!
Chiming in to say the bouncing icon drives me insane. Just disable it altogether! The other notifications are way more useful.
Well, how is everyone doing on the new standalone version of Signal Desktop? Maybe we could call this fixed?
Pretty sure we're good here.
Thanks!
Why would you call this fixed? The dock icon of the electron version also bounces and also has no option to turn the bounce off unless I'm missing something. @alex, @scottnonnenberg
@GhostLyrics I definitely don't see any bouncing. Just notifications. What OS are you on, what version of Electron, etc.?
I'll have to reply later since it's currently in the middle of the night in Europe and none of my contacts are online to test this…
Alright. I'm on macOS 10.13.1, with Signal Desktop (electron based) v1.0.35 and yes, there's still bouncing.
Ah yes, I suppose it does bounce once. I was confusing this for the old issue where the icon bounced incessantly until you actually read the incoming message.
Sounds like the OP is satisfied with the current (recently introduced) behavior which disables bouncing if notifications are disabled.
This issue is old and contains a lot of discussion relevant only to the chrome app. I think perhaps it's time to start a new issue on disabling bouncing independent of notifications.
Seems reasonable to me. @GhostLyrics, I'll leave it to you to enter a new issue.
What is the new issue # for infinite bouncing doc on mac for signal desktop?
@JohnTheodore You're seeing infinite bouncing in the dock on OSX with the 1.x version of Signal Desktop? You should create your own issue if you can't find one. Please remember to provide logs!
It's version 0.44.6?
I'm using this: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/signal-private-messenger/bikioccmkafdpakkkcpdbppfkghcmihk?utm_source=chrome-ntp-launcher
ahh, I see. I'm catching up on the blog post now: https://signal.org/blog/standalone-signal-desktop/
It only bounced the doc once on the new app! so much better.
