Ring: Camera stream stop in home app after 30 sec

Created on 18 Oct 2020  Â·  32Comments  Â·  Source: dgreif/ring

Since updating to 9.12, the live streams (ring pro) stops (gracefully) after 30 seconds, automatically.
Another ring (ring 2) on another homebridge instance, still on 9.11 does not do this, and just keeps on running.

so, I'm back here and yes everything ist working except for that problem. @dgreif is there any chance to get is topic a little bit higher on your list? (Thanks for this great api, you'll get a coffee!)

@paqpaqpaq thanks for reporting this issue. I did notice my streams getting cut short, but wasn't sure if it was something weird while I was adding compatibility for #447. After digging into it more, it looks like the RTCP ports aren't properly latching with the media servers, so RTCP from Ring isn't making it back to HomeKit. HomeKit must have a 30 second timeout if it does not receive RTCP, which is why the stream stops on its own (but gracefully). I'm working on a fix, but I'm not sure I'll have time to finish it today.

Sorry it was my mistake it seem 9.11 is working and that i needed to restart after update to see effect my mistake. However the latest 9.12.1 is still not working.

Bonjour, j’ai exactement le même problème avec la sonnette ring Video Doorbell Pro. Alors que cela fonctionnait très bien avant.

Going back to 9.11 fixes the problem. Tried 12.1, but after UIX updated, the problem happened again. So, back to 9.11 again.

K, this issue should be fixed for _most_ cameras. Any cameras that had issues #447 will still stop streaming after ~40 seconds now (instead of 30 seconds). I'll circle back and fix those cameras when I get a chance.

Seems to be working for ring Pro, and ring 2 👍

Confirmed working on Ring Pro.
Edit: it is no long working just out of the blue. ... Maybe it was because of more thorough testing but after 30secs the image remains but the feed is not live anymore.

I'm trying to have a continuous feed on 1 of my cameras to dsiplay on an APple TV. The camera consistantly stops displaying at 70 seconds.

Mine is also dropping on the latest version. Ring Pro.

I just did the update to 9.12.4 and it still cut out after 72 seconds.
wondering if we can approach this a different way: with a built in auto-refresh, to bypass the 10 minute (I think) limit on RIGN live feed. say every minute or so.

Any solution to this problem? I am attaching the log information from Homebridge. Thanks for your hard work.

Hi everyone,

Same issue here with Ring Pro doorbell. Despite re-install Raspbian, Homebridge 1.2.4 and Ring 9.13.0 it lasted a little longer but cuts out at 60 seconds.
Are people still experiencing this issue as the user that logged it suggests it is working with Pro...

Hi I have the same issue with my hoobs hub and ring pro doorbell, after 60 sec , the video feed is stopped.

Previously i thought it was working but now after some testing the image is still there but it no longer updates after 30 sec. tested with 9.13.0
Edit: same result after testing with 9.12.4 to 9.13.0 on ios 14.3 and 14.4 beta 1
i am getting this error however it still works for 30 secs

I didn't make any changes to address this issue yet. I'll post here when I do.

It seemd to be solved in 12.2 for me.
However, with the latest versions it is limited to 30 or 60 sec or so. It seems to vary strangely enough.

I reverted back to 12.2 last week, and after a couple of hours I get ring server errors, making it fail all together again, so I am back to the latest version.

@paqpaqpaq it's possible that it was working fine for you in 12.2 and newer versions, but your camera firmware may have been updated to use the new Ring media servers, which will cause it to stop after ~40s. I still haven't addressed that issue, which is why this is still open. Hasn't been a top priority for me, but I'll keep it in mind since Ring will probably be moving more and more users over to the new setup.

So I started this thread a while back because i wanted to put a Virtual Window in my basement office showing my RING camera of my back yard. I spoke to DGreif who gave a similar answer to that above here.. My solution with RING would have required me to buy a $200 appleTV to display the ring camera image onto a TV screen framed on my wall as a window. I was impatient. I purchased a TONTON security system with a new camera and a server which connects to the camera via wifi, all for the same price as an apple TV> net-net, My virtual window is working 24/7 with no issues.
Sometimes the easiest way around a problem.... is AROUND the problem..

@dgreif No problem.
Ring 2 is working just fine on 13.0
Ring Pro on 13.0 stops after about 50 secs or so

Still don't know where the MAJOR speed difference came from all of the sudden on version 12.2, which is 'gone' again. That was just prior to the ring /amazon servers crashed some weeks ago. It was streaming live within 1 sec back then, but isn't anymore. (2-4 secs)

@paqpaqpaq your Ring Pro likely switched to the new Ring media servers, which have the 40-50 second limit with homebridge, and the connection time is unfortunately slower than the old media servers. Nothing I can do to make it connect faster with the new servers

can we sue ring for bait and switching LOL!

or promising homekit support YEARS ago ;)

so, I'm back here and yes everything ist working except for that problem. @dgreif is there any chance to get is topic a little bit higher on your list? (Thanks for this great api, you'll get a coffee!)

Any updates here?

It looks like 2 of my cameras (stickup wired and floodlight cam) have been moved over to the new servers in the last few days as they both now cut out at around 40 seconds, unlike my doorbell.

Interestingly, if you perform live view on Rings own official Windows 10 app you see the exact same 40 second cutoff so it looks like they're seeing the same problem as you there (viewing through the android app is still fine).

@BAngel87 no updates yet, but it's definitely in the back of my mind. Working on the streaming setup requires a lot of testing and tweaking and I simply haven't had the time to sink my head into it. I'll post here as soon as I have anything to share.

Just curious. When and if this works. Will it do continuous feed? I have built a non ring workaround and wonder if I’ll back out of that.

@jneuringer I'm not sure how long Ring allows the stream to stay active if everything is set up properly. It all streams through their servers, so I imagine they have some max time they let the stream stay active but I've never tested it.

fair.. I currently use a TONTON closed circuit security system with 2 cameras outside and the control box inside with a 22” monitor connected, giving me the “simulated window”

so i’m happy to keep it

Even with the new servers I get kicked off on the mobile app after around 10 minutes as before. I'm not sure if that's the app or the remote server enforcing it, but I suspect the latter

@dgreif given that the Windows app has the same 40 second cutoff issue and you have been speaking to the Ring engineers are you able to mention this to them? I'm hoping whatever they do to fix that might also help here. I've tried logging it with Ring but have just been told to restart my PC and make sure my OS is up to date 🤦‍♂️

@dgreif Not sure if this helps but on the Ring Windows 10 app it seems you can delete the "linphone" and ".linphone.ecstate" files to restore the full 10 minute live streams (albeit temporarily). They seem to contain configuration relating to the SIP client used by the Win 10 app. This works for a few days then it returns to 40 seconds and they have to be deleted again.

Not sure if capturing one of these config files while in the "broken" state vs working will help you work out what's going on?
