PT_error

🗯 Error Log: 2020-09-09.txt

ℹ Computer information

  • PowerToys version: 0.21.1.0
  • PowerToy Utility: NONE
  • Running PowerToys as Admin: YES
  • Windows build number: 18363.1016

📝 Provide detailed reproduction steps (if any)

No reliable repro steps available. Here is what happened:

  1. Booted machine
  2. Opened several Chrome windows
  3. Right-clicked the desktop to access DisplayFusion settings

Notes: I have been using PT for months with no issue. Perhaps the new version introduced a conflict with other utilities that I have installed (DisplayFusion, AutoSizer, Glass2k, Corsair)?

✔️ Expected result

Windows context-menu opened.

❌ Actual result

Windows become completely unresponsive even with Ctrl+Alt+Del and the PC power button had to be cycled. Upon returning to Windows, PT auto-launched and threw up the attached error.

@crutkas @saahmedm seems like a crash, should this be added to the milestone?

Done

This feels like a nested dual failure honestly. Dark mode png missing maybe and whatever caused a true crash

@mrwilford can you check if you have this file in your PowerToys installation directory C:\Program Files\PowerToys\modules\launcher\Images\app.dark.png? If not can you share the contents of that folder?

I have since reinstalled PT and no longer get these errors, but I did verify beforehand that app.dark.png was in fact missing. I have always used the dark theme so it's not clear why it suddenly disappeared.

Did this by chance happen right after PowerToys got updated to 0.21.1?
How did you update to the latest version? Was it the auto-update or did you manually install the msi or exe installer over it? We are aware of an issue while updating with the msi so I'm wondering if this is related to that.

It definitely did occur after the update to 0.21.1 and I'm reasonably confidant that I first tried the msi but wasn't able to complete the install that way so I then proceeded by opening PT, checking for updates, and following the prompts.

Did you do the MSI or exe installer?

It was the MSI.

@mrwilford, try the exe, MSI will be shifted toward EXE instead

@mrwilford did the 0.23 release fix this? the exe should have forced a fix here.

Awesome to hear, well done guys! My issue resolved after a reinstall of 0.21 and I haven't tried 0.23 yet. I'll comment here if the same issue returns.

@mrwilford
is this still not fixed for you?

This bug has been fixed for me.

@mrwilford
thanks for the follow up.
