Powertoys: Power Toys Run: Add possibility to filter running processes

Created on 3 Aug 2020  路  8Comments  路  Source: microsoft/PowerToys

I tend to search for already running processes quite frequently. It would be awesome to write something like this Chrome @running

Do you think this concept can be generalized as a search query mechanism for Power Toys Run?

actually, if we could force Window Walker plugin with a higher result, i think this would do what you want.

What would be the use case?

  • Switch to the windows of the processes (is available).
  • See process information.
  • Kill processes.
  • Other use cases.

@NikiforovAll that would be pretty neat

@crutkas Yes, I agree.

It is only reasonable to add filtering if there is something else to search for.

E.g. as a user I don't want to open my one of gazillion running chrome tabs, but launch a new instance.

If we do it not only for running processes, it could look like:

@running, @application, @folder

Examples:

Chrome @r // aliasing
Program @folder //if you like to type

Both ideas would make my experience better.

Personally, for me, it is this one _"Switch to the windows of the processes (is available)."_. I also can see the action side bard next to an _Application_ item. So it could be useful to search for a process to click something in the sidebar (e.g. process termination)

Switching windows is available. You can search for open windows.

I used to use WindowWalker primarily to switch between open windows, or find an open window and switch to it quickly. I am really disappointed that running applications are not prioritized at the top. Alt + Space; "Outlook", Enter.....boom, another new instance of Outlook. Ridiculous IMO :)

I've used Switcherroo and for long time WindowWalker(much faster than Switcheroo) as Alt-Tab replacment to switch between running apps.
Now it is very difficult to switch to running apps (Acrobat, IDEs Editors, Running Word instances, TotalCommander etc., cygwin cmd).
Mostly I end up starting new apps. with the new Power Toys Run.
It would be really nice to add a filter to show only running apps.
Anyway, in which sourcefile do I have to place the filtering?
