Powertoys: FancyZones 0.14.0 forces File > Open dialog (e.g., Notepad) to app's zone size

Created on 2 Dec 2019  路  12Comments  路  Source: microsoft/PowerToys

Environment

Windows build number: Windows 10.0.18363.476.
PowerToys version: 0.14.0
PowerToy module for which you are reporting the bug (if applicable): FancyZones

Steps to reproduce

File-Open

  1. Open Notepad.exe (or another application that uses a File-Open dialog).
  2. Use Shift+Drag to move Notepad.exe into a zone.
  3. Select File > Open.

File-Save

  1. Open Notepad.exe.
  2. Use Shift+Drag to move Notepad.exe into a zone.
  3. Select File > Save As....

Expected behavior

File-Open
Notepad's File-Open dialog should be the same size as the previous time it was opened.

File-Save
Notepad's File-Save dialog should be rendered correctly (so that the filenames are visible).

Actual behavior

File-Open
Notepad's File-Open dialog is the same size as the Notepad window and its display seems to have been prevented from rendering.

File-Save
Notepad's File-Save dialog's display seems to have been prevented from rendering.

@skst @JusticeForBeyonce could you try our new DLL and see if the problem persists. Here are the instructions and the download link.

Hi @skst
thank you for reporting the issue.
Do you have the Move newly created windows to their last known zone option ON?

Oops! I didn't check for new options. Yes, that option is selected. And, yes, when I disable that option, the File-Open and File-Save dialogs are created and displayed as expected.

These are the settings when the problem shows itself.

OK thank you for confirming, I was able to reproduce it.
That option has been really problematic with so many apps, we will try to fix it once and for all.
Thanks.

@enricogior does this happen with all applications and modal windows like save / open?

Was also able to reproduce, and issues went away after changing the above settings.

In addition to file open and save, I also experienced rendering issues in outlook when changing folders after snapping to a fancy zone. The app was doing a strange re-draw initially upon snapping, whereby the text would cycle through multiple scales before settling on the correct one and rendering correctly. When a different folder is then selected, much of the text would disappear as with the the open/save dialog. This too has gone away when I disabled the above setting.

@yuyoyuppe https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/issues/840 looks like a duplicate of this

Reassigned, since @bzoz has already some idea how to fix it

Works perfectly now even with the "Move newly created windows to their last known zone" option enabled.

Looks good! I tested File-Open and File-SaveAs on Notepad and a couple other apps I had the problem with. Thanks for the quick turnaround!
