In my past experience, the official Gitter IRC bridge (https://irc.gitter.im/) does not work very well...

I'm curious about the benefits of having both an IRC channel and a gitter channel. Could you elaborate a bit more on that?

@Praetonus as described above, this will make it easier for pony users to communicate with each other, and there are users who like Gitter, there are also users who are only active on IRC, and the bridge bot job here is to display IRC messages on Gitter, and vice versa

How will this make it easier for pony users to communicate with one another? Looks like a way to fragment the community and give us another channel that we have to moderate. If someone violates the COC via Gitter or via IRC, I have to moderate them there. Additionally, who will pay for hosting this relay?

This is potentially a lot of work for those of us who volunteer to maintain and moderate Pony. I get that you like Gitter more than IRC but please understand you are asking us to take on more work and maintenance.

If there was enough community demand, I would be in favor of moving from IRC to another medium (assuming we can address issues of logging, history maintenance etc- which makes Slack problematic). Looking at critter, I'm not in favor of taking on more work for us as team for what looks to be a pretty weak user experience.

and by the way, why the pony has not opened public funding yet ?, because maybe that will help too

@codenoid there are tax implications if we accept funding. there's a cost to setting up a not for profit in order to alleviate tax burdens, that comes itself with a cost. if/when there seems to be enough support that it would be worth our time to do everything required legally, then we would consider it. so far, no one is beating down our doors offering money.

I like gitter because it's friendlier (subjective to me), and we can see chat history in gitter, which means opening the door for community to answer some older question on gitter, and some other benefits as described above

Well, I understand that this is problematic. Perhaps we could do some vote (in twitter?) to see how much demand in community to use gitter / irc / slack?

I think this is the important point here. If the community as a whole has already weighed in on this issue, we don't want to ignore that feedback here. We probably shouldn't consider any action on this ticket unless/until the next annual survey results come in with Gitter as the consensus preference.

With that in mind, I'm going to close this issue.
