Openstreetmap-website: Maps.me added data producing double name & no messages answers

Created on 22 Feb 2018  Â·  8Comments  Â·  Source: openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website

I am not sure if here is the place to put this issue, but here it is.
We have an increase in data (mainly nodes) for places, amenities, etc being added using the maps.me application; and this is coming with an unexpected issue. All nodes are produced with "double" name, in the case of my country (Bolivia) are the Tag name= and then also name:es= with the same value.
The system should NOT allow this automatic double naming unless the user especifically input such features.
The other issue is that however we send messages to those users, it seems that none of them reach the final user of such applications (maps.me; osmand, etc)
Any input? Please and thanks
JJ

Let's all try and keep this positive and friendly.

This is a public forum, so there are going to be some reports or comments in which the author - intentionally or otherwise - belittles existing contributions or contributors. I think it's best in those situations to try, gently and politely, to explain why such an attitude is unhelpful, while also trying to accept those parts of the report or comment which describe real problems or bugs that we need to address.

This is hard! And many people, including me, struggle with this. I find it helpful to remember that we've all got the same goal in mind; improving OSM and the software that runs it. I think of it as an interpersonal version of Postel's Law, "be polite and helpful in what you write, forgiving and accepting in what you read."

We are not responsible for maps.me.

First, maps.me does not duplicate names, users do. We actually try to prevent duplicate names in different tags, although I myself do not consider it an error. Just now I've checked the stream of maps.me edits to see that name:<lang> is filled in new objects only when a user specifically fills it differently.

As for the messages, we use the regular registration workflow of the website. All emails are verified, and users should receive your messages. Some mappers assume that the low response rate is linked to aggressive tone of messages or the complex UI of the website for responding to them (which is true especially for changeset discussions).

Hi Zverik, thanks for your answer that is more complete and didactic than the ""we are not responsible for maps.me". We are responsible for the data that finally lands in the map and that is the issue. About the double name, should be something that prompted the users to fill twice the name. In the Spanish world, we have regional languages, as many other cultures have, but we do not use the name:es= as second name in anything, that why is weird to us see this issue in almost all maps.me added nodes.

About the messages, normally we send to any new user that contribute to the map a Welcome Message from the local community, not claimings for errors or changeset discussions at first stance. we have very few contributors that we can afford to scare them just arriving; in any case from the around last 50 welcome messages so far I only got 3 answers and none of them came from maps.me users; that's why I ask if they receive such messages...

The point of my comment is that the maintainers of this web site have no control over maps.me or it's users so this isn't really the place to address their behaviour as there is little we can do about it.

I'm not surprised you get little reply - to be honest I doubt I would reply to a "welcome message" even if I signed up on the web site in full knowledge of what the project was and that probability will likely be much less for people that make a quick correction via a mobile app and don't really view themselves as part of the community.

It would be nice if a more positive attitude towards new ideas and
suggestions could be attempted though.

When I made changes to the motorway names and street names, it was treated
as though I was being a nuisance suggesting and fixing such a thing, which
I just do not understand at all.
It turns what should be an enjoyable experience into a real chore, knowing
the expected negativity that is coming!
When a scale bar was suggested for the traces (which to be honest doesn't
sound like such a bad idea! Is the trace around someone's garden rose
bushes or down the entire coast of China for example?), the idea was shot
down as if the guy suggesting it was a complete idiot!!

I also contribute a bit on the Graphhopper project and it's all positive
feedback all the time. 'Thanks for the suggestion', 'Excellent, we'll look
into that' etc etc, and it actually makes one _want_ to contribute!

Unfortunately because you have replied to an email sent to the mailing list I have no idea who you are but I'm guessing maybe @jguthrie100?

If that is the case then I thought I had been quite positive about your contributions and most of them have now been merged haven't they? Certainly I found you one of the best new contributors we've had for a while and I was trying to encourage you.

As to the scale bar thing, half the problem there is the way the whole report is phrased - it pretty much comes out and says we must all be sort of idiots for not having done it already and that kind of attitude in a bug report is never going to get a good response. The reporter also has a certain amount of form for such behaviour which doesn't help.
