Openshot-qt: OpenShot crash on video export due to removal of hard disk
Hello,
This is probably less of an OpenShot bug and more of just me being a dumb user. I was making a video from some files on my phone, and while I was exporting the project I unplugged the phone from the USB slot on my computer. I guess OpenShot then lost access to the video files and immediately crashed.
Now when I try to start it up again, it just keeps crashing with a timeline_webview:ERROR TimelineWebView::eval_js() called before document ready event. error. I tried reinstalling and restarting, but the issue continues.

Sorry for the delay responding to this. The crashes have nothing to do with that eval_js() message, those are coincidental.
It looks like the crash is happening when OpenShot tries to open a file, possibly one located on your phone. According to the logs it's trying to read a backup project file, most likely one that was saved with references to files on your phone. You can delete or rename the file /home/hpeter/.openshot_qt/backup.osp to get out of that loop.
In general, yeah I wouldn't recommend importing files into OpenShot directly from a device like that. Even if you _don't_ disconnect it while OpenShot is open, that's just a recipe for trouble. Better to make copies locally, first.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out! It goes without saying that OpenShot shouldn't _crash_ under any circumstances, no matter what sort of file issues it might encounter. But in an imperfect universe such as ours, a bit of defensive pragmatism is still advisable.
In particular, our recovery process could stand to be just a little bit smarter, so that if it crashes _again_ while attempting to load a backup file, it just accepts that it's done all it can and abandons the recovery attempts. That'd prevent loops like the one you got trapped in.

@ferdnyc That would be smart. And, for this particular problem at least, it might be nice if OpenShot still launched a window notifying that the backup recovery was unsuccessful. It could then ask the user how to proceed.

Yeah. We need to get much better about communicating information to the user that they can actually USE and would care about. Yet we'll pop up a dialog box and make you click "OK" if one of the _icon files_ is missing for any of our effect or transition presets (like there's anything the user could be expected to do about that...) 馃檮

Well it's a great program overall! I was able to go from knowing nothing about it to having a simple video ready within about 15 or 30 minutes!
