Notes: First run experience

Created on 25 Oct 2016  ·  6Comments  ·  Source: nextcloud/notes

When you first open the Notes app, you see this:
capture du 2016-10-25 14-34-55

A few things we can improve here:

  • [x] Show »New note« text label next to the plus icon if you have less than 3 notes. So you get to know the button before the text vanishes.
  • [ ] Start with a default empty note. This also enables us to focus the content area so people can start writing right away. If we do this we also don’t necessarily need to add the »New note« text, because the first note is called »New note«.
  • [x] Have placehodler text for the textarea saying something like Write …. We do this at Litewrite.
  • [ ] We _could_ also have a short friendly »Example note« of explanatory text. This would allow us to showcase the markdown functionality real quick (not go crazy) and directly show how it will look like. We also do this at Litewrite but the text should be a bit shorter. :)

What do you think @nextcloud/notes? :)

I strongly aggree with the idea of an example note.
May i suggest to use the screenshot from the README.md as starting point and add additional Markdown information ala ## Easy formatting?

I don't like such a changing behavior. I suggest to show the label ALWAYS next to the plus, and emphasize this a little bit more, e.g. using a background like in the contacts app:
neuer-kontakt

This could be also helpful, when categories are introduced (what is the meaning of the + then: new note or new category?)

Regarding the default note: I like the idea of an example note, too. However, it should not be shown in the list of notes. This could be confusing. I would suggest to save and list the note only, if the user modifies it.

Maybe we can improve it to set a background color to a note in the typical yellow?

Here an example:
after

That would look very strange with the yellow color. I think fixing the initial things I mentioned above in the original issue would be enough for a start. Do you want to work on that @Dennis1993? :)
