Notepad3: Build 828 Release Notes

A new release is available here and the latest changelog is available here.

I am busy preparing a post regarding the new release and will update these notes with a link as soon as possible. If there is anything you would like me to mention in the release notes, please do not hesitate to let me know.

This is what I have so far:

• Substantial changes in Custom Schemes. I can refer the users to the documentation on Custom Schemes?
• The normal installation file is redundant. There is an option to replace notepad already. (https://github.com/rizonesoft/Notepad3/issues/298)
• The exes are no longer compressed using UPX. The UPX compression can cause false malware detections.

In conclusion: A special thanks to @RaiKoHoff @craigo- @lhmouse for making yet another release possible.

Re: Schemes: some thing like “Substantial changes to Schemes, including a new hierarchy and UI improvements. NB: {raikohoff’s note re: breaking previous 2nd Default settings}. See the online documentation for more.”

Re: the One Installer to Rule Them All: [EDIT] Belay that... Let's keep "replace" as the default action. That's what the notepad2-mod installer does. haven’t test it (not much time free today), but my suggestion would be for it to not replace Notepad by default, i.e. that tickbox turned off..?

@RaiKoHoff, @rizonesoft: I'm pretty sure that release build 828 included the code changes in beta build 829... Does it also include the changes that are in beta builds 830-832?

@craigo- If I'm not mistaken the following changes is from beta builds 830-832.

• Change: Onigmo regex engine: use PERL 5.10 syntax + enable "\<" and ">" word boundary matching.
• Fix: Onigmo regex engine PERL syntax: supporting named groups referencing in replacement text.
• Enhancement: Statusbar: Count number of bytes in current encoding.

@craigo- Yes the release 828 also enclose changes of betas 830-832.
Unfortunately, the last point (byte counting) does only apply for a subset of code-pages, for the rest of code-pages it is not counting bytes correctly ... 😐

I think the UPX compressor can be included in the install shield and so it can be opt-in (advanced option with warning about possible false malware detection) to compress NP3 executable on the fly ...

I prefer the compressed version, cause start from USB stick or slow hard-drive (not SSD) is faster (load smaller binary from (slow) disk expanding in (fast) memory).

@RaiKoHoff Upcoming releases will be compressed again. I will be purchasing a certificate in February. The code signing certificate will solve the SmartScreen and false positive issues. 😄
