Please consider tabbed groups. So, groups not vertically aligned but every group in a different tab - like browser tabs.
Still aprechiate your effort a lot. Best bookmark page in town!

So something like only the contents of one "tab" is visible at any time?
I guess this will help if you have a LOT of bookmarks, and some people do.
This will require a lot of code changes though.
I've given this some though and @Excigma is correct, a feature like this will require a lot of development and rewriting of the project.
We're talking about maybe a complete rewrite of the link.js componet. Which is one of the more complex components. Not to mention a new approach to the layout componets.
A feature like this, given the current state and complexity of nightTab's Group compoents, may be easier to build from scratch in a new project.
Okay, let's forget about the tabs for a minute. Instead of the tabs it would also be possible to call up another page of NightTab via a tile. Imagine the following: A tile can be a direct link to the web or a tile can open another page of nightTab. This way a nested cathegorization would be possible. Same result ... different implementation.
Just an idea.
^ Building on that perharps collapsible catogories that expand on click?
I guess for now you can use the search bar to search for bookmarks, (assuming you have a lot of bookmarks).
Or in other word: let the browser do the tabs. Assume I have three categories of bookmarks. nightTab opens up ... every categorie has a tile. Click on a tile and a new browser tab opens up with nightTab showing the bookmarks of that categorie. Feature: every category with its own background colour to instantly grasp were you are ...
Would be perfect for my personal use case. But make up your own mind ...

Hint: For me the scrolling is the biggest issue - I have quite some categories and bookmarks.
@zombieFox : I like this idea and I came here to advocate for it. If tabs are not possible, I have another suggestion which does not use tabs.
I use the visual bookmarks extension that supports this feature. However, the project seems to be dead and nightTab seems to be the best replacement for new tab extension.
Instead of tabs, Visual Bookmarks provides two types of user-facing icons: group and bookmarks. Bookmark icons work as you'd think they would: click on them and they open a link to some website. Group icons act as containers for links. In this way, group icons act as an alternative to tabs. They're basically folders in your bookmarks folder.
You can create a group (say, Search Engines) and put bookmarks to various search engines within them. Just drag a bookmark and hover over the group for a second, and it will let you put the bookmark in that folder.
I've attached some images to help illustrate the idea. The first image contains a list of groups. When you click on a group, it opens a new page and shows you a list of bookmarks. Image 2 shows you the contents of the Search Engines group.

What do you think? Would it be possible to implement this idea?
Came here to make this feature suggestion. It's the number one thing I miss compared to Speed Dial 2. I see the comment above that it would take a significant rewrite of some code, so maybe just keep the idea in mind in case the opportunity arises. Regardless, keep up the great work, this is a great extension overall!
