Neon-wallet: Neonwallet has changed my public address upon i connect it with Ledger Nano S then my NEO gone!

Hello NeonWallet team,

I've used Neon Wallet with my Ledger Nano S, everything was worked well and I've sent all my NEO from Bittrex to Nano S a few days ago. But today, I open NeonWallet but it displays BLANK 0, GAS 0 - and my public address has been changed to the new one!

Can you give me some advices ? this scares me!

@Honestbui @d0ngit - you guys aren't using temporary passphrase or something on your Ledger's? I've been using it on a Ledger and I'm still getting correct address + balance amounts showing. I can understand balance not showing if the API is down, but, public address should never change. Unless @Honestbui is just missing the address amount, and only @d0ngit changed the pubkey?

Do not know why my Public Neo address changed! and my balance all zero + history transaction also empty! :(

I sent the tokens to the 1st address and when I signed in again with Ledger, I had different address and Blank coins. How do I recover that first address where my coins are sitting? The wallet address generated when I first connected Ledger Nano S using OS X neon app 0.0.7 is different than the one I've gotten since logging out and back in with the same app and device. The new (2nd) address appears to be consistently derived (tested on my other machines).

First machine was OS X with Neon 0.0.7 - Neon wallet generated Address_1 with the Ledger Nano S and Neo was received and showed in the Neon GUI. I logged out and when I used the Ledger a 2nd time, it gave me Address_2.
Second machine was windows 10 with Neon 0.0.7 and Ledger generated Address_2.
Third machine was OS X with Neon 0.0.7 and generated Address_2.

Haven't been able to replicate Address_1 anywhere so those 10 NEO are stuck or lost.

Sorry to say I don't really have much insight as to what may have caused this; I'm just sorry they're lost to you :( As a future pointer, might be worth using testnet rather than real world ones for this (not having a go at you, and it certainly shouldn't be necessary, but always better to play it safe!).

Have you guys tried to recover your ledger with your recovery phrase?

This was the first thing i did, before transferring any NEO to my Ledger:

• write down recovery phrase
• check the NEO App on Ledger, check the NEO address
• wipe Ledger
• restore Ledger with phrase, check NEO address.

The ledger wipes itself if you enter the wrong pincode too often (i think it was three times).

Also there is a recovery webpage on coranos' github. You can enter the recovery phrase there to get your private key.

I haven't seen anything like what you described, so I'm not sure how such an error would occur, let alone occur to three people in three days. The ledger app computes the public key just like the recovery site, so if you get a different address than the recovery site, that's very strange.

@seaside-crypto I did precisely the same thing, except I also sent a small amount of testnet to that address, and from that address before wiping; that way I had the added benefit of being able to verify transaction history comes back too :)

I'm talking with Ledger about it. We havn't been able to reproduce the problem yet, and I tried 20 times.

If you can reproduce the problem (wipe ledger, get a passphrase, get wrong address, get right address) it'd help a lot. So far, I've not been able to get it to break and I've tried 10 times over the last 72 hours.

This issue may because of Ledger Nano S is using a Hierarchical Deterministic architecture?

This means Nano S is able to generate multiple addresses and will have a diffirent address after each transaction. For BTC, ETH i knew that nano s supports this! Do not sure that this issue because of what!

Anyway, i have recovered nano s and tried by many ways but the new address still keep appearing. Cannot get back the old address anymore.

Hopefully, ledger and neonwallet can resolve this issue soon!

I'm pretty sure that's not it. We only support "m/44'/888'/0'/0/0" NEO doesn't do "one address per transaction" that's IOTA.

If you want to check, type your 24 word phrase into the recovery site and look at the address list.

Only thing I can think of is some kind of USB port problem flipped a bit in the key.

Hi @coranos thank you for looking into this. I used your recovery tool and my seed words and found my correct (2nd) address but was unable to find the 1st (stuck) address: AGAm...zFfTK. One thing that might be worth mentioning is that I didn't load up the neon wallet and go straight to the login with ledger button. I had timed out on the ledger (logged out) and clicked around the app before logging back in but I didn't finish a new wallet creation process or see the "Your Public Neo Address:" screen until after I logged in the first time with the Ledger.

I have been unable to reproduce the issue where the address changes on the first boot, and is the correct address on the second boot.

Ledger has not been able to reproduce the issue either.

If you are not able to use the recovery site to get your NEO, I do not know any other way to get your NEO.

Just let you know this story from a guy has similar issue as me in NEO - Smart Economy group (Discord App.):
He was used the same private key to login to NeonWallet, but NeonWallet displayed the new address with Zero balance. But today, he informed me that his Neo is already back!

You can see his reply to me in attachment. He said that his NeonWallet is now still displaying the new address but NEO was back! took 1 month from the day he spoke to me in NEO Group (Discord app), very strange!

Ya that's a different issue. He sent it to the correct address, so it showed up in the block trackers.

The error appears to be on the Ledger App only, not on the Windows (or mac) wallets.
I've tried both exiting the app normally (left button), and pulling the plug, and exiting while mid transaction (sign tx) and can't figure out how to glitch it.

To use the website with the network turned off, load the website, then turn off your network.

On a phone, go into airplane mode.

On a network with wifi, disconnect from the wifi network.

Probably nothing will happen if you use on a network connected computer, but if you are paranoid some malicious code will steal your neo, load the site on your phone in private browsing, turn airplane mode on, get the wif, write it down, turn off phone.

If you typed in your 24 words correctly, the first entry in the list should have the same public address as you see in the neon-wallet. Check for spaces around the phrase, make sure there's only one space between each word. only use spaces, no tabs or paragraphs.

That would be the public key the coins were supposed to be sent to.
It's the public key that matches your private key.

If on first boot you got address A, sent neo to it, and then on second boot got address B instead of address A, address B should be the "correct" address, and address B should be on this list.

When you use your ledger and the neon wallet today, do you see an address in the list on the recovery site? If so, that's your correct address. You can confirm by trying to send gas to it, and then from it. If you can send gas from an address then that means for sure there's no glitch that caused an incorrect address to display.

When this transaction was initiated; I had waited Neon Wallet open, until

This is exactly what that site is supposed to do, and that address is the correct address for the private key stored in the ledger.

There is no way that I know of to recover coins from any other address.

I have been unable to reproduce the error. I took two days of holiday break to test this specific issue, and in 16 hours of testing I was unable to get the glitch to occur even once.

I have asked ledger to look into it, they have been unable to reproduce the error.

Quick question: When I try to reproduce the glitch I've been resetting my ledger, deleting the Neon App, and deleting the folder /Library/Application Support/Neon are there any other folder that the app modifies or uses to store state that i'm missing?

Based on the nature of the problem, it seems to be only a ledger device problem. So as far as I know, wiping your device and resetting it should show the glitch.

Sir, your neo is gone.

Finding the defect that caused your car to explode is not the same thing as un-exploding your car.

Simmilarly, imagining ways a car can explode is not helpful, when trying to find why a specific car exploded in a specific way.

Best I can do at this point is to warn people that at some point, their car may explode, and they better test their recovery process at least once before putting more than 2 NEO in any address.

@coranos: Hey Caranos, I do also have a Nano Ledger S and I had some problems sending NEO or RPX from my Neon Wallet to another wallet. I guess that is due to the API of NEON wallet being very slow. However, I saw this topic when I was looking for a solution and got a little scared. So I tried to retrieve my WIF for my Wallet my Nano Ledger S is using.
However, using your tool and putting the 24 passphrase in, does show up a lot of public adresses and WIFs, but not the one my Ledger is using. So I did managed to move all my funds back to my other NEO adress, where I do have my WIF.
My Question: Why cant I find my WIF and public adress using your tool, if I put my 24 passphares from my Nano Ledger S in it? Could this be related to the problem described in this thread? Meaning, that my Ledger hasnt yet changed its address?

When you typed in your phrase, were you sure there were no spaces at the ends?

Also did you type it into "BIP39 Mnemonic" or into "BIP39 Passphrase"?

You should have typed it into "BIP39 Mnemonic".

The passphrase is an advanced option, which is usually blank.

Ok, maybe this app thing is a lead. I saw on several forums and Ledger public forum that when their app didn't show any balance, they were asked to clear their app cache, or even uninstall/reinstall it.

Alexandre's only answer from the support to my ticket was to do so -because they had errors in their API-, and I just answered him that my issue was not related to the chrome app.

BUT that seems to mean that their bug was related to an issue with the address, right?

So my idea is :
IF I plugged my Ledger with a defective version of the app, maybe this one was "initialized" with a defective address. And then when went to connect to the online wallet, this address was referenced in the Ledger as the default one.
After unplugging the Ledger / closing the app / re-plugging the Ledger, the "good" address (which is not the good one for us unfortunately) could have pop up again, in a definitive way...

I just tried this today. The issue is as simple as this: Ledger creates a NEW wallet with a NEW public/private key pairs.
The old wallet is still there if you sign in using your Private or Encrypted key.

The Ledger seems to create a wallet for itself on NEON the first time you connect it, and the public address does not change no matter how many times you sign in/out or disconnect/connect the ledger, so to me is seems this is what's happening.

I'm not an expert though, so I don't really know what to do except for not using Ledger with NEON for now.
Until something comes up from either party about this, specifically how to connect your Ledger to an EXISTING wallet instead of creating a new one, I'm not going to use it.

Hi all, I also am having problems, I have a neon desktop app that i open with my Ledger Nano S and all was working fine, my Neo and Gas were on there i had even claimed more Gas, but since updating the ledger (although i am not sure it is down to this) when i open the Neo wallet It says 0 Neo and 0 Gas but it does show my public key which is the same one as before, and the Neo are showing on that public key when i check on Neo tracker, I have troubleshot the Ledger since updating, can anybody tell me what i am doing wrong? easy answers please as I am old..

@stehaddy if it's showing the same address + they appear on the tracker, then it'll likely just be an issue with the API/explorer for neon wallet, which will be a temporary issue.

@stehaddy - definitely working for me at the moment, and has been working through that time. Assuming you're on the latest version, go to the "Manage Neon Settings" button, and check which "Block Explorer" is in use there. Try one of the others and see if that works. Failing that, I would suggest trying a different network (i.e. tethering to your phone, perhaps) to see if it's a network issue, or, adjusting local computer firewall settings if you have one running.

through and digging through all the details.
Wow. So I assume your in the same boat? I too have tried the BIP39 and
scanned over 1 million of the public addreses.
Oddly enough. I took the NEW NEO public address (which I have NO tokens on)
but I ran the same process, did the BIP39 thing, with the same process and
it gave me the correct "private key" even though
I can access that NEO address with the exact same Ledger device. It showed
up as the FIRST one, not the MILLIONTH !
So how frustrating is this?
What do you think? This will never get fixed? Are you expecting it to EVER
get yours?
I had read somewhere in my searches that Ledger is working on something
with NEO but I need it done quicker.

[Ledgercrap]

He Guys, I'm new to Github and have a very similar problem as the problem discribed above. I have a ledger that I use to log into a wallet. This is a wallet inside the nOS client (nOS in ICO status, but working wallet). I have used my Ledger before and it always displayed the same public address. Today I loged into the nOS wallet again and now it has changed my public address. My Ledger is brand new and was never used to log into any other wallet before. I have no clue how I can change the public address back to the first and original one. I have tried to reconfigure my Ledger with the 24 word phrase but nothing helps. My Ledger is bought from an original reseller and was sealed and untampered with. Before using it I configure it as a new device and stored my 24 word on a Cryptosteel. Fortunately there where no funds on it but this could have been a big problem. So this problem still is not solved and I have no clue what to do. Btw my Ledger is connected to a 6 month old Asus Windows 10 laptop with original software virus scanner/protection etc. Anybody has any information? Btw nOS runs on the NEO blockchain and the nOS wallet is probably NEON wallet based system.

Yes certainly a problem for some and especially me, if you have read these
posts? What if anything did Ledger say to your concern?
I have not been able to resolve my situation despite a tremendous amount of
effort and a significant loss of funds. At least for you, you have no funds
involved?

The only thing I can suggest from all this is as convenient as Ledger is
and as safe as it is MOST of the time, to make sure in addition to what you
are doing is to "make sure" you make backup access to your accounts,
So make sure you have made other back ups of your private key, for each
token or coin BEFORE you put your coins or tokens on your Ledger. Sort of
defeats the purpose but you always run the risk.

IF you do contact Ledger and they have a satisfactory answer for you, can
you please post it on this github notification please?

Hi Wilbur,

Thanks for responding to my comment.

This problem is clearly Ledger Nano S related because the problem occurs with several different wallets it seems.

Strangely enough it does not seem to be a widespread issue but certainly several people have encountered this bug.

If you lost funds because of this then one might think that Ledger is al over this but it does not look like they are very worried.

I did not send them an email yet but tomorrow I will certainly do.

When/if I get an response from them I will send it to you as well to read.

I find it very disapointing that this problem does not seem to get a lot of attention.

This could be a major thing if big funds are lost but as of now you don’t here a lot about it.

I have certainly lost any and all confidence in my Ledger Nano S and are putting them up for sale asap.

I wil probably buy Tresor or other wallet just because of this issui that I have encountered.

I will wait to see if they actually contact me with a serious answer per email.

I logged into NEON with my Ledger nano S and found a different account with 0 Neo ...
Just sent a message to both Ledgerwallet and Neo.
Lets keep in touch and please upload any good/bad new.

I lost 108 Neo on Dec 20,2017, all of which is pledged to anyone who can get users their assets back.
Ledger holds all support open by "want to duplicate" to figure it out.
They are waiting to claim "User error" so all other support tickets wait.
In my case, they told me to use my "support ticket number" as an RMA where I purchased it.
Then they closed my ticket. ...How many others received the same treatment?

With all the "buffers" and "memory reserved" by operating systems (Win10, Android, MacOS, etc),
my suggestion; is only use the "Ledger Nano S" on a fresh "reboot"
with as little as possible running in the background.

Remember; We are pioneers, blazing trails for others to follow.

I sent the NEO to an address on the Ledger Nano S in 2018
I can see it in the blockchain
The address NEONWALLET gives me has changed

I can't find the old address anywhere

have moved away from holding any NEO at all.

This happens to other assets as well, so I feel the problem is in Ledger
code. My best guess is a secret Ledger address was created without a
password to access it later. Your assets are probably still on the Ledger
without the password.

With all the memory in our computers today; there is the possibility, we
were operating in a memory bubble, when accessing assets was lost.

My recommendation is; only use your Ledger wallet, after a fresh reboot of
the computer you are using to access the Ledger.

Until the I get my lost NEO back, I have chosen to not put any additional
money into NEO, to lose.
