It's quite simple... I have a basic wallet key file that I created earlier using geth new account from a Windows command prompt. I then installed Ethereum Wallet later on upon discovering it. I run Ethereum Wallet using the --note-datadir command-line argument to point to my existing chain data.
Ethereum Wallet loads and appears to run fine. I then go to import an account, and drag my UTC--blahblahblah key file into the window like it asks. Ethereum Wallet then crashes, and the account does not get added.
Version: `0.8.10`
OS & Version: Windows 10 Pro
Node type: `geth`
Try putting the UTC file in the /Ethereum/Keystore/ folder manually.
Hi @HunterGraubard, it looks to be a typo on your flag: --note-datadir. actually the correct is --node-datadir.
But if you typed the flag correctly, you can do just as @garretlaxton said and it should work fine.
If by any chance it don't work, please go to Develop > Show log file and attach here the node.log file, so we can investigate.
Thanks.
Do you have Geth installed? Because Geth stores the keys in the same folder. If you do, you don't have to import.
Is the Windows Wallet ever going to work? Since the first release I have never had it download the chain data properly and now the new one won't import my wallet file when I drag and drop, or recognize it when I drop it in the keystore folder. Everything is easy squeazy in Linux, but the Windows apps need serious work, and Ethereum will never have wide adoption until that is fixed. Dual booting so I can send/receive in Linux is getting old.
If you attempt to "Import Wallet file" using "Drop wallet file here" it will _crash_ the app. Opening the app -_after it crashed_- will load/display your wallet without further incident.
And yes, if -_prior to launching the app_- you copy your _wallet backup file_ directly into the ~/Library/Ethereum/keystore/ folder, then upon launching the app... it will load the wallet and will not crash.
This seems to be the case up and until the latest 0.9.1 release.

Still crashes in 0.9.2 if you drop in a key file after first opening the app.
mine crashed in 0.9.2 when file is dropped in, but it does show the wallet when reopened but even fully synced it doesn't show my ether balance?
@ericjarvies Works like a charm.
I tried to copy my wallet directly to the keystore folder, but I did it after drop and crash. No way to makes it work.
Fresh install and copy the wallet to the keystore folder before opening fix it.

Hello. One thing that kept me searching for a while is following. Say you purchased ETH using Mist on computer A. Now you are on a new computer, computer B. You install the Wallet and want to sell/send your ETH. You try to import your UTC files using either the "drag presales" screen or by copy/pasting your UTC files into the KeyStore directory on computer B. This will not work. If you purchased your ETH using MIST on computer A, also use Mist on computer B, not the Wallet. Once I started using Mist to create account/buy & also Mist to sell/send all went well :-) Good luck :-)
Hello--I have a similar situation. On computer B, it is synced. When I put computer A's keystore wallet file on the import window section of computer B, then the program crashes (keystore file for import is dated Dec 9, 2017.). Is there a fix?--because I am unable to sync on computer A, that is why I installed on computer B.
