How to recover a lost wallet after a crash windows. I only have the address on which are ETH. and I'm one of the directories exactly ethereum \ Mist

Most helpful comment

So you all invested real money into a product that you clearly don't understand? Most of you claim to be unable to understand "computers" at an above average level. Maybe emerging technologies are not for you. Do your due diligence before you decide to jump into any investment sector, and that includes keeping your investment safe and secure.

What OS and version are you using? Do you still have the keystore folder?

win7, wallet 0.4.0. not managed to recover keystore. I only have a folder MIST.

As long as you remember your account password this might not be a problem.

Your wallet and keystore data will be stored in %APPDATA%/Ethereum. Type that into a command-line shell to see the full path. I recommend making a backup copy of the keystore folder in there (as explained in https://github.com/ethereum/go-ethereum/wiki/Backup-&-restore).

After doing that you could try deleting %APPDATA%/Ethereum and then running the latest Mist (0.5.2) to recreate the folder with fresh data. You could then copy your keystore backup into the new %APPDATA%/Ethereum and restart Mist to see if it picks up your account.

The problem is that he has installed new win7. I managed to get a program to recover data from hard disk, recover only the folder ROAMING / MIST. No data folder ROAMING / ETHEREUN not managed to odzyskac.Mam only address book and was in a folder ROAMING / MIST remember the password to the wallet.

Not sure I fully understand, but it sounds like you've lost your keystore file. In which case you won't be able to recover your account unless you'd already backed it up somewhere.

just I do not have KeyStore

The keystore folder contains your keys private keys, which are encrypted using your password. If you don't have your keystore folder, youre out of luck. If you still have your presale file and you had your ether still there, you can re-import it.

With kad you can get the presale file ??

If you had one.... If you don't then you don't. The presale have people who participated in the presale

So if i do not have a keystore file and do not have Presale my ETH went to the sand.

Yes. you need to backup the keystore. We should probably point that out more directly, not just in the main menu as "Backup".

Perhaps we can prompt the user with a popup to that effect.

This is actually part of the wallet, though the wallet itself is not build around any node, nor mist. Though we should add a popup, i agree.

Thanks for the help. I installed a new wallet and start from a new adventure with ETH.
Any copies've done a few times :)

It seems to me that should be in the wallet when making backup infused e-mail was to be mailed a key or something like that

Thanks again

this is really frustrating, my computer crashed, I reinstalled the OS thinking if I have the password and the address I will be fine, I am not a computer geek, does this mean I lost my ethereum, all?

I invested a lot of money in this technology and now I am told that I lost it all.

I have my password which I thought it will be enough to "log in" back if I reinstall the wallet, I never knew this is a completely different technology which is not based on logins and I have never been prompted by any popup RED BIG saying: please save your wallet etc.!!!

so, the questions is, what now? I just lost a few thousands ethereum??

I am still waiting for a reply to my post, it must be a way to recover our wallet access, the fact that the developers didn't take in account the pop-up warning knowing that, if the wallet is not backed-up the user will loose the wallet access, you must help us to recover our money, it is not fair! we invested money in this platform, we are investors not high IT level experts, you should help us somehow to recover our loss. It is not my fault that I was not warned that I need to backup a wallet. This is a very new technology which works very different from what we knew before (log in using a password and username) and we had no clue how this new system works.

I spoke to many people who have wallets and they confirmed that they didn't have a clue about backup!!

PLEASE HELP!

All I am trying to do is move one account from one mist on one computer to another mist on another computer that contains other accounts. Cannot be done. Wallets vs accounts??????? Accounts vs Application data????? And multiple backup locations and and bizarre locations inside windows. Where is the button that says: "Export account" and the button that says "Import account". How hard can it be to make something like this? How stupid must you be to not make buttons like these? It simply boggles the mind. Nobody give a shit about keys or json files or wallets or private keys or public keys or sha256 or assembly languages or object orientation or any of that shit. All we care about are two buttons. Export, and import. How lazy can you be? Seriously?

I have M.Sc Computer science and I am appalled and completely confused by the UX of the mist wallet. These people should be ashamed of themselves. I have never seen a lazier UI than that backup menu option.

@bulibasa Your funds are gone. These mist UX people made sure of that.

pompomJuice - I completely agree!!!!

THIS IS REALLY SAD! IT MUST BE A WAY TO RECOVER MY MONEY!

frozeman - what do you have to say here?

its shit
have same situation
wallet stops to sync
i closed it
run geth by hands it show that some block has wrong crc
i have delete that block
restart wallet
it say me about some node missing
i deleted all etherum dir
and now, i wondered that my wallet address and password is nothing
JUST FUCKING NOTHING

WHY WALLET KEEPS WALLET (KEYS) OUTSIDE THE WALLET????
blockchaine agree, other data agree, but keystore, what the wallet itself
dont uderstand

// TODO
// KEEP KEYSTORE IN WALLET FOLDER

frozeman said: "Yes. you need to backup the keystore. We should probably point that out more directly, not just in the main menu as "Backup"."

I say: "Uhhh, ya you think?"

I'm really surprised Ethereum is this poorly designed at this stage! Lost $150 (about 12 ETH). Nothing I'm going to lose sleep over, and at this rate I probably never will. But seriously, this is the most un-user-friendly software I have ever ever encountered. Of course you should point out that the keystore needs to be backed up! I was never able to even download the entire blockchain to use it before I would get prompts that a new Ethereum client was available. At one point to try to get it to work, I think I deleted the whole folder, while writing down my password. I presumed the long complex password I created was all I needed! I guess none of you have jobs with actual human beings?

Storing the important keystore information in some obscure place like %appdate%keystore is meaningless to ordinary people. Burying the "backup" command deep in some menus in the software is useless.

It's not like you guys haven't seen bitcoin wallets that prompt people to back up their seed! You're not reinventing the wheel here. You're just trying to make it round and not square.

@pompomJuice

I totally agree. This is amateur hour. ETH is a joke.

Same herr, tought I was safe backing up my public key and password, had to format Windows, no recovery method worked to get the folder back.
I understand this is a way to create scarcity, witch artificially increases ETH value. Moving to a better coin.

Hello, if any of you need assistance undeleting, restoring, recovering, or locating your wallet file please message me on reddit or gitter. I may or may not be able to help if you formatted or repartitioned your disk. Username is greaterninja
Thank you.

Sigh, what a joke. When I used geth in February 2016, there was no mention that the software would put a private key in some random folder on my computer, while also downloading the entire ethereum blockchain. Well no duh I decided to delete a 10gig + folder on my hard drive when I needed space and was not an ethereum miner. All it said was to guard the password with my life. No mention to guard the private key with your life. No mention of putting super important files in a completely random directory.

When people like myself or others are trying to promote Ethereum, we lose all our eth due to terrible documentation from ethereum. What happens to the founders and their friends when something goes against them (i.e DAO)? Well they hard fork and keep all their money. How fair is that? @vbuterin where is my hard fork that saves me from this lack of documentation?

I lost 169 eth that was going to use to buy my partner a special gift. Feel free to destroy that eth because it is never coming back.

I am so thoroughly annoyed that there was no mention of a keystore / private key when I used geth and even today, when using Ethereum Wallet there is no mention how important the keystore file is. I don't think I deserve to lose any ETH cause I followed the instructions exactly. How could such an important thing be left out???

Here's my new address @vbuterin . Send me 169 eth for the simple fact that I supported this project and followed instructions. Just like the DAO investors followed instructions with good intentions, why do I deserve to lose my eth?

0x988254c49e761386cafefc31dAA96FA85f788a5f

I completely agree with @terencechow !!!
Very well said! I did exactly the same following the instructions, precisely but I lost all my money while I guarded the password with my life, still have it but I didn't know and I was not made aware about that file which I lost. And I want my money back! @vbuterin

@terencechow @bulibasa @pelebel @confirmationbias @J1MmY9 @pompomJuice @bobbiz message me on reddit or send me an email to [email protected] I can try my best to recover your wallet. This means I can potentially recover your geth/mist wallet, presale wallet even after you have deleted it or even reinstalled windows..provided you still have the original disk drive. Additionally, I can also help those who lost money on the DAO to recover more ETH and ETC. Fee would be 20% of the account balance recovered...I've had some success with certain people.

What if you do have the keystore files? I've downloaded the chain using parity but now Mist will not read my account even though my keystore files are in the same place. How do you restore that account if the Mist wallet is not syncing or reading that account?

@kobst You cant move around accounts. Only Wallets that contain accounts! Pretty nifty won't you say? Keystore files are you private keys.

@kobst you can check your account on etherscan.io and see when you created wallet contracts.
Take those wallet contract addresses and import them using Dashboard => Add wallet => import wallet

ok, totally confused dumb guy here. A year ago I started mining Eth, hard drive died and finally got the system working again with a new drive. Have no idea where my wallet was. Still have my account info and can see that I have 25 Eth mined a year ago at ehterscan.io. Am I just looking at something I could have had if I still remembered where my wallet was, perhaps even remember my password or is there something I can do to retrieve the 25 Eth I have sitting there?
Any help would be appreciated.

@Terrambo looks like we're in the same situation. I would advise to start mining with another payout adress. I personally decided to use an online wallet to make sure it never happens again. Lost 20 ETH.

Same here. Lost 15 ether. No keyfile for one address as that PC crashed. and just synced my wallet today via other keyfile backup that had 5 (actually showing 9.9) etc, now has .019, so basically done with the local store block downloading wallets. . Sticking to BTC & LTC. If had to do it all over again, would do it with an online wallet. I can see the contract in the blockchain that it created, and it just seems stuck, for nearly a year. The etherscan.io doesn't show anything other than it's stuck on a contract. 0xe16171A65715841DF329a582A5DfFA17f900aC8d

Same problem here! created a wallet on ethereumwallet.com. I am the average internet user and i had no idea that my URL is the key to everything. i thought i could go to my wallet with simple normal log in. Now i have the password and the transfer address. i have 200 ethers which are equal to 36,000 USD today. This is extremely unfair. i tried everything possible to get the address back with no luck. I just don't get how i can see them, but i cannot access them. This makes no sense to me at all

So you all invested real money into a product that you clearly don't understand? Most of you claim to be unable to understand "computers" at an above average level. Maybe emerging technologies are not for you. Do your due diligence before you decide to jump into any investment sector, and that includes keeping your investment safe and secure.

https://github.com/cameron6584 people who invest money are not all computer developers, it was the developers' obligation to make sure people understand the new technology, the wallet was not constructed properly, it should have warned people that there is a file somewhere hidden which us paramount to accessing the wallet, other than the password, it's simple, other wallets are safe and offer this feature!

If you are in a situation where you have deleted the ethereum directory on your pc, It is sometimes possible to recover the data. Here are the conditions:

  1. All you did was delete the folder "Ethereum"
  2. You havn't tried to reinstall ethereum thinking you just fix it
  3. You are using a magnetic hard drive and not an ssd
  4. You stopped using the computer immediately, or shortly thereafter
  5. You didn't run a "defrag" on your pc.

If you think you meet these conditions, then I may be able to help you out. However, in most cases, your hard drive, or your whole computer may need to be sent to me in order to recover it.

If you have a desktop computer, then just sending the harddrive will suffice.
If you have a laptop or a macbook, you may need to send the whole device to avoid damaging your device.

Recovering a Password is the most difficult/impossible with current technology. However in the future the computing power may become available to brute force your password. So don't just give up hope.

Besides, like all investments, they are typically worth more over time.

In the meantime, if you know your password, but broke Ethereum, drop me a line and I will work with you to repair your damage.

-Raymond

i'm kinda stuck as well. i still have..

  • wallet adress
  • backup private key
  • encrypted private key

any chance to recover a wallet with those? thank you in advance.

Possibly if you remember your password to your encrypted private key

Wow!! Really? That's crazy!! https://github.com/pompomJuice

Yea but luckily I know rocket science so I backed up those keys.... which had 0 balances on them.

This wallet is just a unjustifiable bad piece of software.

Still no export button, because of "security concerns". Pay no attention to this, they want you to loose your coins so that theirs gain value. That's all that is going on here.

The argument being that if you can just willy nilly export your keys to say.... the attackers laptop, you should not be able to export it with a button. You have to navigate to the folder and somehow this prevents you from copying these keys to the attacker's laptop. Pure genius.

@ethdev & @supere989 - can't really say i'm 100% sure knowing the password.. but if i could get somehow to a place where i can enter it to try it out!? sorry if this sounds like a 12yo sittin' in front of a computer, but this ether universe sometimes makes me feel like this.

so what am i supposed to to with the pieces of information i still have?!

I recover keys/balances/ether and even crack passwords. I have huge, positive feedback on bitcointalk if you need someone who you can trust. In either case, I would make sure whoever you interact with about keys, passwords, and wallets has a good track record. You can message me on bitcointalk, email me, or pm me on reddit.

@greaterninja I did send you an email a while back but still got no reply from you. Any chance you could reply?

please email me the following:

let me know if you need help recovering the wallet that was deleted, formatted or lost a password, cracking password, or whichever.
plz also note "ethdev" is a new account and might be used for phishing.

Some general tips for recovering your accounts:

Use your favorite undeleter program to recover deleted keys. If they cannot be undeleted you should make an image of the drive and use linux to manually search through the image for certain patterns that exist in keyfiles. It's a longshot.

To extract private keys you must install Ubuntu and manually build cpp-ethereum/ethkey. You can feed geth keystore files to this program. Even very old ones and also cpp-ethereum keys.

If you don't have the password but have an idea of what your passwords look like, you can use this:
ethcracker

Easy peasy.

TOP TIP: Don't allow anyone to help you recover your keys by doing the above steps on your behalf. Instead they must explain these three easy steps that anyone can do.

https://github.com/pompomJuice would the above help even if the key was lost completely, erased?

would you be able to help?

can you please explain:

"To extract private keys you must install Ubuntu and manually build cpp-ethereum/ethkey. You can feed geth keystore files to this program. Even very old ones and also cpp-ethereum keys."

I found my keystore file and I have the pneumonic seed phrase. How do I get access to my wallet?

@pompomJuice so I put in the keyfile but then it asks me for the password, I dont remember the password I just have the seed phrase. Is this still possible?

@fesic The _pneumonic seed phrase_ is used to create the keystore file.

What did you use to create the kestore file from the phrase? Jaxx? Metamask?

Use ether wallet to import an mnemonic seed. Mist can't do that yet.

@frozeman Can you provide a screenshot of that please. I cannot see where on ethereum wallet you can enter a phrase. Just a password, but that myetherwallet can handle too.

@fesic Maybe you are confusing a seed phrase with just a password. Enter that seed phrase as your password on myetherwallet when you import your keystore file. See if that works. Make sure myetherwallet gives you a green lock on ssl in your browser:

image

If it works immediately move your funds to a new wallet.

Having read that, looks like pain in the ass! Is there a simple way (bash, crontab, no Windoze, no clicking) to safely backup the whole stock eth-Mist-Wallet?
(Mist means in German: dung, crap. mess things up..)

Thanks, Michael

Mist stands for crap? Well, that's what it is. This is honestly the most piece of crap software I've seen since the computers were invented. This is a joke created especially so that people can loose their money, there is no other explanation. Installed wallet, put some ether into it. Open wallet after a while, wallet showed 0 ether, started updating blocks, after 60 hours it gets blocked, restart, starting again from scratch!!! Really? Also, when I installed the wallet there was no prompt for backing up the keyfile, so people have been talking here for a year or two loosing money but yet the wallet is the same, no backup option, no prompt, nothing! I will never use this wallet again ever! I will keep my money in kraken online. I hope this is not the future, because this is not a bright future!!

I have the Keystore file as well as I know my password but the issue is when I checked my account on myetherwallet.com I can not see any ether in my account.

Please help

if you provide your eth address i can verify your funds are associated with
your keystore.
If you would like them transferred to another account, provide your
keystore and password.

Thank You!

I having a problem remembering the password, i have the keystone file and the the app opens with my account info, i just can't transfer out without the password. Is the password a passphrase consisting of twelve words? what tools to brute for the password

@stunjiturner Read my post above. All the info you need to recover your funds is there.

What's the format of the keystone file? The eth cracker takes text, json?

I can help anyone with recovery if you still have the original hard drive.

I do computer forensics so I can recover data even if it was deleted and you installed a new operating system. Works with Windows, Mac, Linux. 97% success rate. Just reply to my post. Price is negotiable, might even do it for fun.

About trust: You have the wallet address, you can see all transactions in and out, there is no way for me to steal without everyone knowing including you.

i deleted the geth folder cause it was taking up 78 gig of hard drive space on my mac, but now when i open of the wallet the balance is zero? the keystone file is good, and backed up? whats going on? anyone know if the eth is gone forever? is it recoverable? can someone help?

I won't offer you to recover your ETH now as this would be very un-serious in any way;
First of all: Reject any offers like that from unknown people!

Now the good news:

  • If you have a backup: keep it! your coins won't be lost, wether you restore it today or in 12 months
  • If you still have your private key: they are not lost, just "invisible" for now of your client hasn't the blockchain (geth-folder)

The bad news:

  • ETH-Mist wallet is IHMO "MIST - in German this means CRAP" as it diverts essential things across at least two folders (so you hopefully have a full backup incl the geth-Folder)

But as long as you own your private key(s) it should be recoverable, honestly - I'm still not sure how, so I keep daily backups..

But most important: contact someone personally trusted for you

If in doubt, keep your private Keys and wait for a solution, once you give them out, your ETH are most likely lost.

Michael

The whole point is they dont have their private keys. Im saying in case
the system was wiped clean that the keys may be recoverable.

if .ethereum incl keystore was deleted: right! then you're lost..
if there is no backup: goto a forensic lab to recover deleted data, otherwise it's gone, right!

Problem is forensic lab = $1000+

Yes, thats what it takes, as it's pretty much effort (I do it sometimes but then with "it costs XXX, if I fail 0$, thats my motivation :) )
$100 isn't enough, sorry, because it takes usually many days of work for recovery in such cases; for the asker: if the private-keys are deleted it's only worth if it's worth a "few bucks" more than $1000
If there is no backup and you want to have it recovered (possibly) by anyone: UNPLUG THIS DISK NOW - first and most important

@stunjiturner : but as long as you have your keystore, all is fine - though deleting the geth-Folder just makes your local eth-client believe the blockcain doesnt exist, so it's empty..

I have the keystone folders and files , I just deleted the /geth folder on the Mac .90

I lost my private key for my ether delta wallet.

Is there any hope of getting in back now if in the future?

Any reasonable answer or help will be appreciated

I meant are there any hope of getting it back now or in the future?

i went to etherchain.org and put in the address for the mist account, there are not transactions for the account and its showing zero balance.

HELP please!

open the wallet 3 days ago, shows empty (I have some money in there) started updating blocks went to 99% (1500 blocks left) after 3 days, not it went back to 96% 9000 blocks left, and again goes backwards and forwards 99% then 96% this has been ongoing for the last 24 hours it seems to be stuck there at the end

how do I finish this?

this piece of software is driving me crazy!!!!

You have to do a ‘fast’ sync with ‘geth’ from the command line. Lookup how
in the geth docs.

Make sure to first delete the stuck chain from your ethereum folder.

I don't know because it is not visible, wallet is empty and doesn't show any addresses

thanks for your help

How could you have transfered money to wallet whose address you don’t know?

I had the address before when I transferred the money but I don't have it written down any-more and now there is no address in the wallet so I can't see it

my problem is:

the wallet got stuck in 99% 1200 blocks left last night and morning - and now (just got back home after 5 hours) is actually getting back again to 96% and 9000 blocks, it's been 19 hours since the wallet is at about 95% and it seems it will not move from there and complete the blocks downloads, how do I complete the download 2/3 % left?

I don't really understand how is this blocks syncing working?

am I doing something wrong or this is a really shit software?

Yea the software’s sync is incredibly bad. I have not met a single person
that has had sync work for them with default settings. You need to delete
the chaindata folder, and then run a ‘light’ sync using ‘geth’ from the
command line.

As far as your wallet goes how could it have disappeared? Did you
reinstall? And how much did you transfer to it?

this is a real mess!

so, what happened is:

I open the wallet - nothing in, zero, no accounts, blank, there were money in it last time when I opened, I did not touch / change anything, so zero balance no accounts nothing

I started updating the blocks - 24 hours went very slow and sluggish until it reached 99% then the nightmare was on, 99% -> 96% -> 95% -> 99%

I restarted the walltet disconnected the internet a few times, did some more tricks and in the end I managed to fully update the blocks

but....surprise, STILL NO MONEY in the wallet!!! zero, no accounts, etc.

I repet, since the last time I did NOT change anything, I did not touch anything, all in place.

so, what did I do? I did have a backup of the key file and I replace the existing one with the backup, which was exactly the same one, and SURPRISE!!! the money are back in the wallet!

SF? It looks like If I didn't have the backup keystore file I've lost the money despite my wallet was in place and I didn't touch anything did not move or modify, just trying to update the blocks - and I suspect something, while I was trying to open the wallet the upgrade (wallet new version) window popped up and that might have compromised my keystore file - I don't see any other explanation

I will move my money now into kraken and I will never use this software again in my entire life!

The money was never gone then. Problem is if the sync isn’t complete then
it will show a zero balance. I wouldn't transfer to any exchnage for long
term storage, that is just begging for trouble. You can always use a site
like etherscan to check your funds. If you aren’t savvy enough to sync via
geth then get yourself a ledger or trezor. Last thing you want to do is
leave it on an exchange.

it was gone, if I didn't have the backup it was gone! I still have some money from my previous wallet which I lost the keystore and I lost the money (access to money is impossible without the keystore file) oh yeah, I can see them on etherscan but what good is that if I cannot touch the money? :)

the sync was complete but the wallet was empty, I tired everything, I am really sorry but I will never use this rubbish wallet again, honestly, I lost money before but this will not happen again!

better on an online website where I can recover my credentials easily in case I forget / loose them , this software is very dangerous!

Ever heard of mount gox?

Ever consider .gov raid on offices?

The keystore file contains basically two things:
- a public key (address)
- a private key (most likely encrypted)

If you have the keystore, you have both items. If the private key in there is encrypted and you don't have the passphrase for the encrypted key, you are out of luck. This is by design. Basically, if you have the account in Mist and it's asking you for a passphrase (and just hitting enter doesn't work), then it's an encrypted key. You can also open up the keyfile in a text editor and it will tell you what the cipher used to encrypt it is.

There is NO POSSIBLE way to recover the passphrase shy of cracking the encryption used in the keyfile.

How many guesses do I get?

Unlimited guesses, it's not tracked anywhere.

Hi Guys I created a MyEtherewallet and sent 7 Eth to the initial address it generated, then I signed with my password to view the 7 ETH, and its not there, but I notice a completely different address…So whilst signing up its created an address for me but in the process Ive created a new key and new address overriding the old one, problem now is I don’t have the key for the old address?? I clicked save on the multiple occasions when prompted it asked me to but can only locate the newer info…

I tracked the original transaction through etherscan, and can access view of account address which is mine but I obviously can’t access the ETH to send it to my current wallet address, so for now looks like its stuck..
Any help would be appreciated
Thank you

Do you have the ‘password’?

@bryaan Thanks for your response Bryaan, yes I do have a password mate, just not key..

Hi. I reformatted and reinstalled windows on a 500gb SSD that had my keystore on it. I have run EaseUS data recovery without luck. I have the public key and passphrase - can i recover my wallet with these (without having private key)? Thanks.

Are there better data recovery wares? I invested in this somewhat goofy futurist enterprise and for all the genius claimed to be about, only my "luck" has gone into the Ether. For all my investment, Eth helpdesk is a halloween mask.

You guys should do a schedule optimization study to determine the exact amount of time required to deliver short shrift to honest investors against technocratic 'karma' accusations. Is it three years; or more, just so as to fall on Christmas? On the advice given, I backed up the unusable Ethereum email files onto a second disk, and a usb key. In the interim three years of demoralizing forks, ever new wallet versions and poor investor support, both crashed or failed and/or got wiped. Expecting hardware to be stable for three years is a sort of 'karma' failure all its own. Discounting these real time experiences as merely emotional or irresponsible is incorrect, eth also degraded investor faith -- specifically through the culturally ugly media quips of globalist personage Vinay Gupta.

At the level of legal proof, I have the document that Etherum.org sent, the ethersale-app file. This contains my public key, the blockchain trxn, my issuing wallet address, and the corresponding dates. I also have a password associated with the date of investment. Help desk remains ghoulishly unresponsive.

I have read the Git boards and run a few passes of data rescue and disk drill on all devices, but so far, eth continues to own all my 'luck' and money.

Even it's probably not what you want to hear and I fully agree:

If you don't have a backup of your private key(s) & remember your
passphrase: there is simply no way to recover it.
Anything else being offered by third parties for recovery is just "voodoo".

Yes, the instructions for this are more than bad but without
~/.ethereum/keystore/* : it's simply lost, there is no technical way to
recover this.
Sorry.

Based on your transactions it would be theoretically possible but as
there is no "central instance" being to made responsible for.. Hmm..

Take it as it is (like it happened to me many years ago)
It's like the fraudulent managers of "very promising" cooperations which
promised something and then went away with million$-bonuses and a
bankruptcy.

Take Tesla shares: on paper it's worth more than Ford currently but in
real-life it's worth a shit as it burns 1/2 million per hour and never
earned a single dollar: it might succeed but who knows?

Finally, one thing: make sure you - and only YOU! (not some
"online-service") - has a backup of your digital wallet.
This remains true for any digital currency, technology; then it's pretty
safe, safer than investing in "traditional" stocks where you (little
man) have no backup or insight what happens there.

Thanks, Michael;

I appreciate your sobriety. Last night I tried another disk search with r-tools (r-studio); but so far Ether still has my "luck". I also have a long list of these "very promising" trust insults, class actions, disappeared exchanges, rubbish equipment and on and on, in my own experience. My concerns about this real world loss are not intended to be babyish. The responsibility argument is tolerable, although their 'karma' affectation is vain and vulgar. When I studied up Eth in 2014, I was not blind to the possibility of loss.

The hardware I was using was not au courant; so even though Ethereum was able to receive my investment, their ware wouldn't mount at home. I ended up storing a comatose entity that languished on weary equipment which occasionally crashed in the course of 2015/16/17. The documented tax-evasion of the companies that produce these sandbox gizmos doesn't even feed back into my nation. Even if it is run by obscene neo-liberal late 20thC bolsheviks. Mundane as it is to say so, when comparable realities manifest for Ethereum, they hard fork.

A sad tale of cheap chips and everhack competing for planned obsolescence dominance. Realistically, I don't value the experiment of globalist computing. Globalist anything, including markets, citizenship et al., brings social and cultural costs that read somewhat obviously as pouring our western investiture into a motley stew of dysfunction and incompatibility. The hallmark of leadership -- national or corporate, used to be about strictly conserving technologies which emanated from the ethnos to its demos. But hey, who doesn't want to be worldly!

Will it all end in blood?!

Hi guys. I haven't posted here for quite a while ago, but if you need wallet recovery services for bitcoin, litecoin or ethereum wallet I can do this. My fee is 20%. I have over +20 trusted user feedback and +2 moderator feedback on bitcointalk. I have 6x6 gpu clusters that can be used to crack presale wallets as well as almost any other type of wallet. You will need your encrypted key, .json file, .key file, keystore directory, or .dat file in most scenarios. If you have a good idea of your password or the way you type your password there is a good chance I can recover your funds. If you have a wallet or need data recovery write me [email protected]. Thank you guys.

I don't want to judge, but 20% "fee" is close to robbery or blackmailing.

Here we go:
I myself, a real person with a real address in real life offer 0% + a
free bonus from the victim - only in case of success.
Just to make sure: If I get the keys, ok - if not we dont have anything
to work with (I assume to have some Idea of the passphrase)

Don't get me wrong, I currently have a very well paid fulltime-job until
2019, but I'd try it in spare-time..

To be clear, although I appreciate enterprising interest, mine is not a password issue. I have the password well documented. The keystore/json files are gone, at least for now. I am scanning the drives I stored them on. I have my public Eth address. Also, authentic investment transaction documentation from the Etherium wallet email. This includes the date of the transaction, the blockchain transaction hash and my public blockchain bitcoin address. The core of my issue was/is that the hardware I was using was not able to mount the Eth wallet. A peanut shell, but no peanuts.

@Makki Since you made the slight at me I'm responding. The difference
between me and you is I actually have a reputation and I'm upfront about my
terms.
Why would someone trust you with their private keys to do it for "Free"?
20% fee to spend many hours, potentially days, or even weeks cracking
wallets is an acceptable fee.
Just to run 6 GPUs it costs a couple dollars a day. This does not even
include time and strategy of attacking the wallets. Do you even have a GPU
cracking setup for all Ethereum wallet types? I doubt it.

wallet. You will need your encrypted key, .json file, .key file,
keystore directory, or .dat file in most scenarios. If you have a good
idea of your password or the way you type your password there is a good
chance I can recover your funds. If you have a wallet or need data
recovery write me [email protected]

antuerius, do you have the mnemonic words for recovering your wallet?
If you still have the computer, phonewallet, hardware wallet, or hard drive
that had your wallet, it still may be recoverable.

Hi guys, Cabot here. It's been a long time. I thought I could just forget about etherium. I thought I could just let go of the fact that robbers and burglars exist in the form of cryptocurrency even to this day. Kind of like watching a margin Trader boost my short call right out of nowhere and me to lose my entire pool. Never mind Trading, it's go time. As in Goethe reham. Never mind that I have 2075 e theorem which I've locked up and threw away the key. That's right, I'll just keep buying more ether and locking it up into my unrecoverable Json password on the blockchain. Maybe if enough people buy up all the extra either, it will inherently then become useless and people will realize it. Then the value will finally drop to zero, where it should have stayed.

@supere989 do you still help recover wallets?

Hello, I recover ethereum, litecoin and bitcoin wallets. I have a handful of powerful gpu machines that can crack passwords much faster than most CPU based crackers. My fee is 20%. If you need me, my email is [email protected] Lastly, I can provide solid references on request. Thank you guys and have a great day!

greaterninja you mean you recover PASSWORDS not wallets? you cannot recover a wallet if the key file is gone / deleted / lost - you should specify that

I can confirm that greaterninja was successful at getting me into my eth presale wallet, he was not the first who tried to help but was the only one to make it happen. He's a beast, highly recommend. If you don't have access to your coins the percentage is very worth it.

geofflosophy can you please confirm he did it without the keystore file

I have the keystone file, can’t remember the password ?

that almost anyone can do

@bulibasa, @sightuary I can recover deleted keystore files, files from
formatted or partitioned drives, and I can also crack the passwords on
wallet and keystore encryption types for ethereum, bitcoin, litecoin, and
ledger wallets/keys. Basically there is usually at least one or more ways
to skin a cat. I can crack all keystore and wallet types for Ethereum with
GPU arrays. 20% is my fee if successful. [email protected]

Hey guys, experts and developers,

I have a really big big problem.
I am really frustrated because i am trying now to restore my wallets since 6 month. No success.

I have a lot of ethereums and ethereums classic. All in all i have 3 wallets.
I reinstalled the windows and formatted the ssds. I had the wallets on two pcs. But both are formatted and reinstalled.
So i lost the wallets because no one told me that in the appdata are so important files. (i have a backup of the mist wallet and the passwords of the wallets but i cant finde the keystore file its missing). I think this is a shame that at the beginning no one told me to save the keystore file. I started at the beginning of Ethereum to mine it. I love Ethereum and i have around 190 ETH and in addition also a lot of ETC in this Wallets ( pre fork wallets). But i can not access it.
We as a community should do all to recover this coins because otherwise they are sensless and forever stored in this wallets and lost.

I tried to make a recovery of the ssds but it was impossible.

This are my wallets:
6D8545DE4c71B244e8Bd2751Dd149D5aa354b683 (on this are eth and etc - pre fork wallet)
cFfA080e1D8638591FC396061e5576dC98e1Eb47 (on this are eth and etc - pre fork wallet)
9dc44a09c5172ee02d9329bfa599e68a36a40afd (just etc - dont know which wallet)

I will also give you 20% of the etherums what you/we can restore.

Please help me! I really need help with this issue!

Thank you!

Where are you located?, at $154K on the line this need very careful attention.
I'm in South Florida. [email protected]
This is the only one I could see of the one mentioned above.

Hey tonyp12,

thank you for your answer.
Yes please help me to recover it i really need help. I will offer 20% to the one who can help me.

https://github.com/ethermining123 if you lost the key, no one can help you to recover the wallet, it is lost forever!

i lost just the keystore i have the backup with the mist wallet where all was stored and also the passwords.
I did not make a backup of appdata :(
No other way?

can you send me all information that you have? i think i can help
[email protected]

Be careful to send you passwords to random people! This can easily be a scam. Im looking at your @VRn00b

Hey, thank you for the info frozenman.
I will take care.

VRn00b i sent you a mail.

I've also got a lost wallet file on a HD that was written over with Ubuntu. Im hoping the damage isn't too bad but so far I have not found any keystore files.

Email or pm me if you can help

Use Recuva (or similar mac/linux program) deepscan for a file called: UTC--
If that fail, use Recuva Scan Contents.. and look for {"address":
Use Win10 cmd find "crypto" 'filename' , to extract it if it's now hiding in large file that "overwritten" it.

@ethermining123 I can also attempt to help you recover your ethers. Send me the info at [email protected] or we could skype if you want.

Best would be not to use the hdd where your wallet was at all. Any writing to it can potentially overwrite your keys.
If I were you I would do the following:

  • remove hdd from pc and put it in an external bay (usb)
  • i would make an image of the hdd (this might be tricky for non-tech people)
  • then I would use testdisk (Recuva is crap @tonyp12 - I am biased as I had bad experiences with it) to inspect the image I created on the previous step
  • cross fingers to recover

Well I do hope you manage to recover them by either using someones help or by yourself. 190 ethers is a huge amount of money.

He had the keystore file, I had not lost that. I had lost the password and he was able to brute-force it based on my password history.

I will add that I had given the same information to others who were unsuccessful in bruteforcing this same keystore file.

I used the python recovery tool and no permutation of any password I could have ever used was successful there. I seem to remember that the presale site had an option to generate a password for you, or am I imagining that? If they did anyone know how many characters it was? Otherwise I might have used a 3rd party to generate it with the minimum number of characters, I wonder how difficult it would be to brute force those 8 characters, we have access to a server with 56 cpus....

Hey,

is it possible to brute force it without the keystore file?

can you pick a lock without the lock?

Guys. Before using some technology it's a MUST to read documentation on how to use it. It's also a MUST to understand what the underlying technology behind it is. In this case - it's BlockChain (Ethereum). This is essentially an Open Source project, with several client applications such as geth, that are licensed under the GPL (or similar) with nearly ZERO guarantees to the end-consumer (see geth LICENSE).

If you were to go and read the documentation, you would be aware that back-ups are essential:

There are several places where you clearly can see:

DO NOT FORGET YOUR PASSWORD and BACKUP YOUR KEYSTORE

PS: Open Source projects are awesome and very powerful! For example checkout Linux. You just must use them wisely. With great power comes great responsibility.

PPS: @terencechow I understand your pains. But this is life. It teaches you lessons. Next time you will be more prepared.

valera-rozuvan so that's it, is the the users' fault? developers are good, no problem :)

how about the bloody developers who built the wallets put a banner when you install - saying: Warning, DO NOT FORGET YOUR PASSWORD and BACKUP YOUR KEYSTORE otherwise you will loose your wallet. That's it, I am sure it does't takes too much time to write a script which does this.

What I see here in fact might be actually bad intentions and some people really want users to loose their wallets, otherwise, I don't understand, how after so long knowing this is a big problem and people are loosing money, this feature / warning message still doesn't exist??

first post here was made in March 2016, plenty of time to sort that problem out

The private key is encrypted with the password and then stored in plain-view on the host pc.
So yo need the password to get the actual real private key

Technically this been bugging me for over a year, thanks for the explanation, one day I am going to try to recover the password, maybe when ETH hits 5K

@bulibasa The devs are aware of the problem, and are working on it in a separate thread. Head over to issue https://github.com/ethereum/mist/issues/555 .

Yes, these glib postures shake my former investor faith in the integrity
of etherium. I am not a litigious person, yet this sophomoric tough
noogies routine will eventually attract negative legal attention. I
wouldn't mind a reply email from the helpdesk or an offer of returning
my principal investment sum. As a good faith investor I can do due
diligence on data recovery possibilities; but the inability of etherium
to discover the depth to correct vague instruction, or actually stand by
its investors is globalist scumbaggery.

So I have the similar story, I reformatted my hard drive and I had a mist wallet that I didn’t realize I needed the private keys. I contributed to the DAO and have a significant amount of ETH and ETC I need to recover.

I ran software to recover, and only thing I could find was 2 file with .PLAYLIST format (I have a MAC for what it’s worth).

I was able to open these in a random video program, and it opened with text that included “SHA256:” and then a key. It also had other SHA formats listed. When typing the SHA256 keys for the two files (they’re different) into MEW, it tells me the file is password encrypted. I haven’t recalled my password yet, but is it possible this could be my key???? Or is this something completely different?

Yes, but its encrypted. I you need to brute force crack it. You can send me mail to [email protected] and I will explain how

Why are you so sure this playlist files keys are the correct ones? Couldn’t it just be some other SHA256 encryption for running the program?

Hi, I have a similar issue recovering my ethereum.
1/ I had to delete the original data file as it was nearly 400gb!
2/ I DO still have my original keystore file (UTC etc etc) and password
3/ I upgraded to v10 but it never seems to fully sync - gets to 99% & 72 blocks left then hangs there!
4/ I've tried importing and dropped my keystore file into the box - says importing but nothing happens and my balance remains at zero.
Suggestions please
Thanks in advance

Frustratedman, you can mail keychainx at protonmail dot com and get more info how to export the private key

I have a similar problem. I try to sync ethereum wallet with Geth, (wallet 0.10.0), win 10, and my wallet create 2 new addresses and replace my UTC files. 2 hour's after the start geth, i stpoped and create back up of Ethereum and Ethereum wallet directory. Now with ethereum wallet 0.11.0 I see my old Wallet see the funds but cant send because I see " couldn't estimate gas, resorting to default parameters. Transaction is likely cheaper than the estimate". One our ago I start Ethereum wallet 0.10.0 and see old acount with funds, try to send, All Ok with Gass price but in CPP -Ethereum 1.3.0 I see " Invalid key - MAC mismatch; expected 00c1e0aa....................................27b51f4 , got 2fd71c48f98e....................................2247903fc169a32" and Wallet say "invalid password or missing file". Question, If I see my old wallet, and remember my password How to create UTC file, extract private key from SOME WERE ELSE (not from UTC - I have not for this wallet), or how to transfer my money in new wallet?

You have to do it manually. You can mail me directly on how to proceed. mail to [email protected] or visit my site http://keychainx.io (crypto recovery service) for more info what we do.

Hi keychainx, I appreciate the help but not comfortable with sending over my wallet details.
Any other options?

Well, I dont want to flood the github mist list with Trezor questions, but we can start here.

1) What do you exactly have for your mnemonic, 12 or 24 word?
2) Do you have a passphrase (i.e. the 25th word?)
3) You need to recreate the merkel tree and see all possible addresses, if you have the right tool, you can dump it to a file or use online services to scan them to see if you recognize your address.

Trezor should use BIP 39 and you can use iancoleman's site to check it, but there are many options and variations, and could take some time to go through all of them

If you made sure your passphrase is correct and you know in which folder to look (there are several depending on your trezor version, passphrase length and BIP version). Your funds are SAFE,

Your trezor that is dead, you might consider checking if its not just the cable or lcd display. (we have experience of exchanging screens or buttons on damaged hardware wallets)

/KeychainX

Hi,
It’s a 24 word seed never used a passphrase and did not check the cable. will do that.
Thanks again
Ibby.

Ok,so if you have the 24 words do this.

1) go to https://iancoleman.io/bip39/
(if you are unsecure about the online version, turn off your internet connection, once page loads, it will work locally)
2) enter your 24 words in BIP39 Mnemonic Box
3) If they are correct, you should see a list of addresses in Derived Addresses Box
4) Look in Public Key, if you recognize the address, and if you do, write down the corresponding Private Key
5) Download Electrum wallet from https://electrum.org/#download
6) Launch Electrum, and import the private key, you should be able to use it to move the funds

Good luck

connection, once page loads, it will work locally)
  2. enter your 24 words in BIP39 Mnemonic Box
  3. If they are correct, you should see a list of addresses in Derived
    Addresses Box
  4. Look in Public Key, if you recognize the address, and if you do, write
    down the corresponding Private Key
  5. Download Electrum wallet from https://electrum.org/#download
  6. Launch Electrum, and import the private key, you should be able to use
    it to move the funds

Good luck

Hi keychainx,
It’s a Eth wallet that I am looking for, as soon as I change the coin column to Eth it says invalid root key. What I’m I doing wrong?
Regards
Ibby.

Sorry I ve lost my ethereum wallet Password, I have only the json file with me,is there a way you can help?

If you mean me, yes, I can brute force crack it for you (have over 100 servers). You can send me mail to [email protected] with info. I charge 20% fee if I manage to crack it depending on the size of the wallet. If its very small i will do it for free. (just for the fun of it)

Try to open with MyEthereumwallet without password. The First wallet in Mist/Ethereum wallet have not password
Upload the json file – I password request field type some letter and clear it. Tray to open.
Hope help.
I have the same problem, and it was a decision

Cabbotron, I'm not just running a shady business.
But if you feel confident you can do the following, then you can send me just the hash. To extract it you need to do the following:
1) install python on your computer
2) download johntheripper from github https://github.com/magnumripper/JohnTheRipper/tree/bleeding-jumbo/src
3) run "python ethereum2john.py yourjsonfile" (it should be in the /run folder)
4) you should get a string like: $ethereum$s102481437964c9bd1b5f63bde56560808c894792f8f670694590b776e22381
e32dd33b7f5c865554d67604394ae54d7a4f9735bdb85c90e606a672d18add1d167d793b96f
2a849321cc04cb6c0fcee1bd4b195ca681ca28064dc45000f02e47230c5b6
This string contains only a hash of the password, no other info.
5) mail it to me, i can run the servers to crack the password

Before I start I would like you also to commit by sending me proof of
a) wallet address so I know its real
b) a list of possible passwords so I could narrow it down
after that I will start and keep you updated a few times a week

If I manage to crack the password we would need to work out an escrow how to handle it so you dont just open the wallet and run off..

I have a huge list to go through and it could take days if not months
/KX

Is this your main (first creating wallet in Mist/ethereum)?

ps. be very cautious where and how you upload your wallet, if you use a browser, make sure to delete history and close it down. Also, myetherwallet.com has been compromised in the past (redirected on the ISP level) so I would never upload it online to a public site. Also, if it says it needs a passwords, it probably is encrypted, otherwise the private key would be visible in the JSON file (which i guess its not)

You're right when I uploaded my json file on myetherwallet,it ask for
password and when I typed in a all password I have ,it says wallet is
encrypted enter a valid password, unable to decrypt

Hi keychainx, It’s a Eth wallet that I am looking for, as soon as I change the coin column to Eth it says invalid root key. What I’m I doing wrong? Regards Ibby. On 10 Dec 2018, at 10:26, KeychainX
Hi Ibbykhan,

FIRST select ETH,
Then enter the 24 words, then it should work

It doesn't work I remember I had more than 1 wallet and some were already
locked

Hi Ibby.

Click on BIP32 (the BIP44 is standard)

On BIP 32 Derivaltion path try the following:
m/49'/0'/0'
m/49'/0'/0'/0
m/44'/0'/0'
m/44'/0'/0'/0
check addresses each time
as last resort check
m/44'/61'/0'/0 (this is for ETC) but worth looking. One guy sent tokens to ETC from ETH network and was able to retrieve them this way....

/KX

Hi Keychainx,
Tried all derivation paths still can’t find address. All theses addresses start with 0x02 or 0x03 but mine starts with 0x06 (mew)
Kind regards
Ibby.

Can you write one or two words of the passphrase then I could tell you which wallets accept the words (some wallets only use specific dictionary) and you could use them to try recover them through their apps. (Where you could choose different Derivation paths. Shooting out of the blue is very hard.

If you dont want to post them here you can send them in a private message.

It looks like a pywallets dump. Remember how you created the original wallet? Is the dump a JSON File?/KX
