I'm sorry for that! But thanks for confirming my concerns when I see such
mock-ups.

You can tell us why is it so important to remove a single entry. This is
an uncommon wish, so it won't get high priority given the options that
already exist. And there is even the possibility to edit the saved settings
manually. The location on macOS should be something like
$HOME/Library/Preferences/org.openorienteering.Mapper.plist.

There is no feature to remove a particular map from the list. However, it will disappear

  • once you opened enough other files, or
  • when you click the "Clear" button below the list of recent maps in the "home screen".
    Note that this button will remove all files from that list.

FTR, as «Recent maps» is permanent part of Mapper's start screen window, think, it would be cool to add feature to remove a particular map from the list:

  1. Place cursor on list entry;
  2. Click Right Mouse Button;
  3. In opened context menu click on «Remove this entry from list»

Is this a screen shot of something that actually works? Does it work on a Mac?

Is this a screen shot of something that actually works?

Its just mockup/proposition

Now I'm having trouble opening many of my maps in Open Orienteering. I just
get the message

Cannot open file:

/Users/harbuck/Desktop/Saltese.omap3:20.omap

for reading.

These are maps I had used before and they are in the recent maps list.

"/Users/harbuck/Desktop/Saltese.omap3:20.omap" is a strange file name but it shouldn't break (at least on macOS). But could you please open another issue? I don't think it is related to the list of recent files.
