Kiss: Add other messaging icons to contact quick menu

Created on 12 Aug 2018  路  9Comments  路  Source: Neamar/KISS

I've set an alternative messaging app (signal) to replace my default texting app, so this works nicely for contacts who use signal. However, I communicate with the majority of my contacts through WhatsApp, and cannot open this from the contact preview in KISS; only once I open the contact the little icon for it shows up. Right now it is therefore quicker to open the app itself.

It would be great if we could set apps to show in the contract previews resulting from a search.

Thanks for the amazing launcher!

PS: even further integration that would show WhatsApp groups in search results would be even more amazing, but I can see how that may not be on the roadmap.

hey,

is it allowed to revive this topic. i have seen a nice implementation of this feature in smart launcher. whatsapp, telegram, mail etc. what is included in contact's details are shown in results page with a small icon next to name like kiss do for call and sms.

i really, really like to see this feature in kiss. i hope you can figure out how to add this feature and consider it valuable for your time.

thanks and best.

Whoops just saw this #500. What's been happening since then?

Also just found out that my PS is easily implemented by opening any WhatsApp group, and adding it to the home screen from the top right menu. This is preferably over doing it for every group automatically.

So... back in #500 I wasn't invested in Whatsapp and was still using text messages, so I didn't pay much attention to the issue.

I just tried to use smsto, but it's not working. I'm sure there are ways to do it still, and I think KISS could benefit from a better integration with "modern" text messages app. Anyone who can help?

I had another look.

You can use smsto (https://stackoverflow.com/questions/38796704/choose-among-sms-whatsapp-or-telegram-to-send-message), but then you see an ugly dialogue giving you the list of apps installed on your computer able to send SMS.

I think the easiest option here is probably to default to "whatever is the system default for smsto", and then in the settings provide a way to pick the app to use by default in KISS. Still, it feels clunky.

The other option is to display the list on the first click on a contact, then offer to remember whatever choice the user makes, and to add a setting somewhere to change it.

Now, we have to work with assumptions and tradeoff. For instance, in my case, I use whatsapp for some contacts and messenger for some others. Yet I still think that the choice you make on one contact should be consistent with all other contacts.

The Chrome sharing menu is pretty good for this, they have a generic "share" which opens a dialog to pick an app, and an icon to reuse the last sharing app you used. However, displaying three icons on the contact is probably overkill.

Or I'm just overreacting, and displaying the dialog once on first click and then sticking to the user decision until the app is reset is the best way to go.

I'm in a similar boat where I use WhatsApp with most of my contacts, but signal with some, and Facebook messenger with others (if I have it installed, which I prefer not to). But I do agree that having the simple and fast launcher deal with particular preferences for each contact sounds too complicated... My 2cts

Can I piggyback on this feature request and ask that email be added to contact icons?

Side note: I have never worked on Android.
Just googled and found this. Might help!

Also this:
How to show&handle contact details intents of apps?

Thanks for sharing @mubashir-rehman that's actually really useful.

I've used it for an initial implementation. Not sure how this'll evolve, but I'll use it for some time to see how it goes.
