Kibana: Bring Canvas elements into Dashboard

Created on 22 Sep 2017  路  19Comments  路  Source: elastic/kibana

We discussed this as a possible integration point between Canvas and Dashboard. It would allow re-use Canvas infographics on the Dashboard.

Some notes:

  • Canvas visualizations are not designed to be clickable, so clicking on a slice in Canvas pie will not result in creating a filter
  • However, Canvas visualizations can respect filters applied at the dashboard level, like the other elements.

Making this into a Meta issue to include the discussion on embedding entire workpads versus just elements, easy import from dashboard to canvas, additional visualization embeddables.

Original comment by @ppisljar:

if we manage to pull the move to canvas expression language inside visualize this should come pretty much out of the box, as users will be able to use canvas functions inside visualize and save them as normal visualizations ....

What ist the state of this issue ?

yes it would very handy and awesome feature having canvas in dashboard. Is it possible to bring it UP?

Agree.

It would be awsome if there is a comprehensive view including Canvas and Dashboard. You do not have to go back and forth with Canvas and Dashboard.

Very great feature. Must have

It's been 2 years since the original report. Are there any plans for this feature in the near future?

I'm a bit of a noob to elastic stack and I thought this was the intended use case. I found this thread while trying to figure out how to perform this task.

We are currently working on making visualizations embeddable in both Canvas and Dashboards.

@timductive
Do you speak about Canvas Shareables?

If so, I guess you mean:
We are currently working on making canvas embeddable in both external web sites and Dashboards.
Right?

@fbaligand Canvas Shareables will make Canvas workpads embeddable in external web sites. We have another project that will make Visualize and Maps visualizations embeddable in Canvas.
We are still debating if there are any Canvas Elements that should also be embeddable in Dashboard but the framework will be there if we find a use-case to do this.

Thanks for precision.
That said, this issue precisely requests for the ability to embed Canvas Elements into Dashboards.
And there is already 11 likes on the issue.
So, to me, there is some use-case for this :)

@fbaligand yes, I think it is just about narrowing down the ask.
For example, variations of this topic include:

  • Bring entire Canvas Workpad into Dashboard

    • How would this work with multiple pages

    • Filters work very differently, there are grouped filters, how does that translate to Dashboard global filters

  • Bring Canvas elements into Dashboard

    • Most of these elements can also be built with Visualize (and Lens in the future) what's the value add? or are there specific elements unique to just Canvas that make sense
  • Bring Canvas grouped elements into Dashboard

    • same issue with Filters
  • Would we do the opposite and embed an entire Dashboard into Canvas?

There are some big questions here to think through, so any specific examples help!

Thanks for these detailed possibilities.

IMHO, I'm firstly interested by bringing a whole canvas workpad in dashboard.
If there is multiple pages, why not asking to choose which page. Or other option : having an automatic slideshow.
