Hey @ptrthomas!
I'm THE Ruby guy from your Karate workshop today at IIT Kharagpur (great workshop, BTW 馃槃 ). I'll try to get started on this project and contribute soon. Adding the contribution guidelines (as per issue #304) would definitely help in this regard, for future contributors too.
Meanwhile, I somehow missed out to ask this question: Is there any fun easter-egg (or) reason for naming this project as "Karate"?
hey. I remember THE Ruby guy ! :)
Thanks for asking this. I've been asked this question a few times and here is an opportunity to structure my thoughts better and dig into some details.
For some reason I have gotten into Japanese to the extent where I actually learnt to read. BTW you and your friends may be interested in this weird connection between Japanese, Python and Open Source that I was able to make when I was fooling around with Blender and Unreal Engine.
Story: In the days when personal computers were still new, there was this popular game using the rudimentary graphics capabilities of the time called Karateka and the creator went on to make a very popular game called "Prince of Persia". You will see that the Karate logo is inspired by that game, and here is my twitter interaction with the creator - Jordan Mechner - who is a legendary name in video games: https://twitter.com/jmechner/status/838437530525659136. At the time, the image I was using as a logo was somewhat lifted from the original game, and I was worried about copyright implications.
Anyway, at the time I started working on Karate in Dec 2016 - I did a Google search to check if there was any popular software called Karate. To my pleasant surprise there was none, and so that when it was decided. I'm happy to say that today if you just do a search for "Karate" the GitHub link turns up within the first two pages of results. It should be on the first in a matter of time !
