K-9 Mail interface is mature, but is still not adequate to completely replace centralized chat services (such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Hangouts, etc.) with mail protocols as mature standard layer.
While this would be nice to have, it's definitely not a priority. K-9 Mail still has a long way to go to become a complete email client.
Some features (as this one) could spread FOSS usage in front of privative software.
They could! But that doesn't mean we don't have a ton of more pressing things on our plate and are understaffed as it is. PRs welcome :)
