Currently user must notice that the field even can be added and then add it manually on every edit.
As result iD mappers are generally not specifying their sources.
To not block/scare mappers it would be OK to not require filling it.
I concur! I would add that it would be great if the background data source were filled in by default when entering the upload dialog. So for example, I am thinking that would be the imagery sources that are highlighted in blue in background selection menu. I end up over abbreviating my sources so they probably are not very clear, for example instead of distinguishing between two types of Maxar imagery frequently I just say Maxar.
Yes, please!

@matkoniecz I know you mean to help but I'm happy to see people's enthusiasm in this repo however they choose to show it.
Sorry! I will try to avoid backseat moderation.
I'm not against showing the source field by default, but I'd want it to be a bit more user-friendly than the current semiCombo field. A few ideas:
I have a design in mind I might mockup. Some of the other fields could also benefit.
For iD mapping I would expect that the most valuable info would be distinguishing between "I map place that I visited" from "I am armchair mapping based solely on imagery" and "I map based on some other sources".
